It may be used in battlefield operations and emergency search-and -rescue operations. One of the most important and perhaps the most difficult problem in ad hoc networks is "routing," i.e. finding a path from a source node to the destination. The major difficulty is caused by the frequent changes of such routing path due to frequent network topological changes caused by node movements. This means a large portion of the network communication bandwidth is "wasted" in maintaining and updating the paths. Such updates have traditionally been done periodically and by every node in the system. This thesis represents original, innovative work in ad hoc network routing. There are two major innovations, (1) A movement-triggered topological update protocol is developed. This requires update to be sent only when the node movement is large enough to cause new connections in the network. (2) A small subset of all user nodes are designated management nodes, and only such nodes will need to update topological information. The thesis describes in detail how to implement the new protocols, and extensive simulations have been performed to demonstrate that the proposed protocols outperform existing ones. Book excerpt: In this thesis, we explore new techniques for robust, efficient, loop-free on-demand routing in Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) using the same information (i.e., topology information, sequence numbers, etc.,) used in prior on-demand routing protocol proposals. We provide new insights into the robustness of protocols based on destination-sequence numbers when operating with node failures and loss of routing information, and present a new destination-sequence number framework that works correctly even with failure conditions. We also show how destination-sequence numbers can be manipulated as routing labels for improving performance, rather than being strictly treated as time-stamps. We present two different routing approaches that exploit the topology information that can be collected on-demand during the route request ood search. The first approach translates topology information into labels that are then stored at nodes in strict lexicographic ordering along any successor path to a destination. Loop-freedom is maintained by allowing nodes to only pick "smaller" labels. The second approach maintains a list of topology information that should not be trusted in-addition to the known path to a destination. Using the notion of trusted topology, nodes can always make routingWe conclude our research with a new on-demand routing technique that exploits the route request search process, which is an integral part of any on-demand routing protocol. Without requiring any additional mechanisms or information, we use the uniqueness of route requests to realize a on-demand routing framework. We, then, present extensions to the basic framework to improve performance using more information that can be collected during the flood search process.

Book excerpt: A Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET) consists of mobile nodes, equipped with wireless communications devices, which form a communications network without fixed network infrastructure or topology. The MANET is typically characterized by: limited bandwidth; limited radio range; high mobility; and susceptibility to impairments that degrade the signal to noise ratio and bit error rates. These characteristics pose challenges to the MANET routing protocols. In addition to these characteristics, we have found that the mobility pattern of the nodes also has significant impact on the MANET routing protocols. In order to achieve improved efficiency for these networks, we propose the Motion Vector Routing (MoVeR) protocol. MoVeR is a position based routing protocol for MANET communications that uses the motion information of mobile nodes to determine how to route the packets. MoVeR predicts the future positions of mobile nodes, based on motion vectors containing current and previous position, and velocity information. The protocol is designed for applications in which we expect that nodes will have access to a position service. We also assume the availability of a location service by which the sender can obtain an initial estimate of the location of the destination. Nodes using the MoVeR protocol distribute the routing information to neighbors in one-hop transmission range. Given the position information, MoVeR can potentially employ one of several forwarding strategies. The implementation used for this research employs a greedy algorithm forwarding the packet to the neighbor such that the neighbor is closer to the destination in the near future. Since the forwarding strategy could be subject to local minima problems, the algorithm also includes a recovery mode which is activated when this problem has occurred. In the recovery mode, the protocol traverses the planarized graph to the destination. MoVeR is a localized routing protocol and therefore exhibits reduced control overhead compared to protocols which maintain a global topology. The mobility prediction capability of MoVeR improves routing performance in several types of sophisticated mobility scenarios. We describe the MoVeR protocol algorithm, implementation, and simulation results show that MoVeR gives improved performance compared to Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing and Dynamic Source Routing.

The performance of MANET is related to the efficiency of the routing protocols in adapting to frequently changing network topology and link status. This thesis addresses the issue by comparing the relative performance of three key ad-hoc routing protocols: Destination-sequenced Distance Vector (DSDV), Ad-hoc On-demand Distance Vector (AODV) and Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR). The protocols are tested based on two scenarios, namely, tactical networks for ships and sensor-based network nodes. The objective is to validate the scalability and effectiveness of the protocols. Four performance metrics were measured by varying the maximum speed of mobile hosts, network size and traffic load, to assess the routing capability and protocol efficiency. The simulation results indicate that AODV performs better than OSLR and DSDV in the first scenario. Although OLSR also performed relatively well, the associated high routing overhead is the dominant reason for not choosing it. On the other hand, OLSR emerged as the protocol of choice for sensor networks, where the high routing overhead is counteracted by consistently better performance in all other metrics. Due to the slow evolution of the sensor network topology, OLSR performed satisfactorily for best effort traffic but needed subtle adjustments to balance between latency and bandwidth to meet the requirements of delay-sensitive applications. Lastly, default parameters of OLSR were tweaked and recommendations were made with results that showed promising ways to further improve the performance of OLSR in sensor networks, albeit not as significantly as in the tactical networks for the ship case.

Flooding-based protocols waste precious bandwidth in wireless networks; while position-based protocols attempt to reduce the bandwidth used for control traffic. Many of the position-based protocols use a unit disk graph model for the network and thus implicitly assume a uniform transmission range for mobile hosts. However, this assumption may not be true in reality. Due to the irregular transmission range, it may not be as straightforward to extract a planar and connected subgraph on which to perform routing. In [1], a position-based routing algorithm that can handle irregular transmission range and guarantee delivery of messages is presented. In this project, we simulate the irregular transmission range scenario and compare the performance of five routing protocols in this scenario: Dijkstra's shortest path[4], Greedy routing[13], Perimeter routing[3], GPSR[10] and RPBR[1].
