Book Synopsis A Reluctant Hero by : Richard Hopton
Download or read book A Reluctant Hero written by Richard Hopton and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2012-02-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of one of the greatest naval heroes of World War II. This is the first biography of Cpt. Robert Ryder VC, Royal Navy, one of the greatest naval heroes of the Second World War. Ryder led the audacious raid on St Nazaire in March 1942, which completely destroyed the port’s dry dock—depriving the Germans’ mighty pocket battleships of its use for the remainder of the war. The raid was one of the most brilliantly executed combined operations of the war, and much of the credit must go to Ryder’s outstanding planning and courageous leadership. Ryder’s name will be forever linked with the raid on St Nazaire, for which he received a Victoria Cross— but the rest of his war service was no less distinguished. Torpedoed in a Q-ship in 1940, he was rescued after clinging to a piece of wreckage for four days. After St Nazaire, he was heavily involved in the planning of combined operations and took part in the ill-fated raid on Dieppe. On D-Day he led a naval assault party in the first wave of the invasion. For the rest of the war Ryder commanded a destroyer on the Arctic convoys. This lively biography tells the story not only of his wartime heroics, but of the unusual and adventurous life that preceded the war—including serving in the Antarctic and taking part in some of the earliest ocean yacht races.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study argues that the most illuminating meditation on vulnerability, masculinity, and ethics in the wake of the Reformation came from Spenser, a poet often associated with the brutalities of English rule in Ireland. The underside, or shadow, of violence in both the fantasies and the realities of Spenser's England was a corresponding contemplation of the nature of the precarious lives of subjects in post-Reformation England.

Book Synopsis The Sense of Suffering: Constructions of Physical Pain in Early Modern Culture by :
Download or read book The Sense of Suffering: Constructions of Physical Pain in Early Modern Culture written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-01-31 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early modern period is a particularly relevant and fascinating chapter in the history of pain. This volume investigates early modern constructions of physical pain from a variety of disciplines, including religious, legal and medical history, literary criticism, philosophy, and art history. The contributors examine how early modern culture interpreted physical pain, as it presented itself for instance during illness, but also analyse the ways in which early moderns employed the idea of physical suffering as a powerful rhetorical tool in debates over other issues, such as the nature of ritual, notions of masculinity, selfhood and community, definitions of religious experience, and the nature of political power. Contributors include: Emese Bálint, Maria Berbara, Joseph Campana, Andreas Dehmer, Jan Frans van Dijkhuizen, Karl A.E. Enenkel, Lia van Gemert, Frans Willem Korsten, Mary Ann Lund, Jenny Mayhew, Stephen Pender, Michael Schoenfeldt, Kristine Steenbergh, Anne Tilkorn, Jetze Touber, Anita Traninger, and Patrick Vandermeersch.

Book Synopsis Life Is Short and So Am I by : Dylan Postl
Download or read book Life Is Short and So Am I written by Dylan Postl and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heart, determination, and triumph This is the story of a boy who fell in love with wrestling before he was able to walk. Born with achondroplasia, a condition that causes disproportionate dwarfism, Dylan Postl had endured multiple surgeries by the age of 12. And yet, he held on to the dream that he would one day become a professional wrestler. Ignoring the naysayers and against doctors’ recommendations, Postl began training in his teens, and he soon began appearing on local independent shows. Before he turned 20, he was signed by WWE to play the role of Irish grappler Finlay’s feisty sidekick, Hornswoggle, and remained a fixture in the company for a full decade. While most of Postl’s adult life has been spent in the wild world of the wrestling industry, his is more than a story of a little person’s journey through a world of giants; it’s a memoir of elation and anguish, triumph and disappointment, and of how an endlessly positive outlook combined with the unwavering support of family and friends helped a long shot become a success in his industry and a loving, responsible father.

Download or read book My Favorite Match written by Jon Robinson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remember the time Goldust ran over “Rowdy” Roddy Piper in his gold Cadillac? How about when Randy Orton battled Mick Foley with a barbed-wire bat named “Barbie”? When you ask a WWE Superstar what his favorite match is, you might be surprised by his answer. But that’s the thing about a phrase like “favorite match.” It’s not about the greatest match in their careers or the time they won their first title. It’s about the moments that stand out and make them smile. Sometimes, it’s the same smile they had when they left the ring, face full of blood and sweat, to the roars of thousands. Sometimes, it’s the smile they tried so hard to hide when anything and everything seemed to go so wrong that even the ring announcer was accidentally injured in their struggle. And sometimes, it’s the smile only the showmen themselves share with each other as brothers in battle with one goal in mind: doing whatever it takes to put on the best show possible, even if it means landing on a few thousand thumbtacks along the way. These are their stories, straight from the Superstars who performed some of the most memorable matches in WWE history. These are the most unexpected, the most brutal, the most hilarious, and the most unforgettable moments of their careers—captured in their own words.
