Book excerpt: ‘Shut up young woman abi man! You’re disturbing the serenity of this environment. What is wrong with you? Do you think that you’re the only one interested in finding a way to leave this god-forsaken building? We’ve tried all your suggestions but none of them worked. Get out of that place before I spend the last ounce of strength in me to crack you down.’ He barked. ‘We all have families too; in case you were not aware. Nonsense!’ He yelled. ‘You see old man, were it not that I respect the few grey threads on that bald skull, I’d have smacked you like a child,’ Chika retorted. ‘I’ve been respectful all my life and worked hard to be where I am now, with people like you under me. So, you best believe that if I hear one more insult from you, I won’t mind folding this garment of respect to deal with your old behind.’ She thundered. ‘And by the way, I’m a woman, a wife and a mother. Better watch it boy.’ she concluded as she picked up her pen and continued to unravel the code. A much-solicited silence suddenly walked into the room, with everyone gazing at each other as if waiting for the silence to speak. 'Room 39: A secret worth dying for; a love worth killing for' takes us on a beautiful tour that frightens us at the beginning, calms our nerves immediately after, but glues our fingers to the rails until the end. When you think that you can predict the outcome, she tells you, “Wait, there's more to explore." And just when you feel evil has triumphed, then comes the good smiling back with the last laugh. A well-crafted novel that will keep you in suspense till the last paragraph. I ask, "how can one person write so well?" When you think of a fictional thriller that takes you from the basest level of human exploitation to the basic expression of unconditional love among humans; When you think of a perfect narration that explores individualism and the potency of togetherness; When you want to read a book that contrasts unfettered evil and ethereal forgiveness; you just need to pick up this book and gulp down every line from start to finish. That's how italicious Room 39 is.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction and the prologue detail quite explicitly what my novel is about. My book is based on a true story and lead characters, several of whom I knew personally in the late 1960s and early 1970s before they passed away. I never did meet Ian Fleming, the creator of the James Bond novels, as he left the UK for the West Indies after the end of World War II. My book is therefore a historical novel with hitherto largely untold aspects based on my own personal knowledge, research, and professional experience. It’s a great novel because as several reviewers have pointed out no one has ever told the story of how Room 39, Ian Fleming, and his boss and colleagues worked to undermine the Nazis in Portugal, and Lisbon specifically, and the ending with the meeting in NYC with Wild Bill Donovan. My novel shows how Fleming used his experiences in Room 39 as the basis for his postwar Bond novels.

Book excerpt: When Londoner JP Floru tags along with three friends running the marathon in Pyongyang, little could have prepared him for what he witnessed. Shown by two minders what the regime wants them to see during their nine-day trip, the group is astounded when witnessing people bowing to their leaders' statues; being told not to take photos of the leaders' feet; and hearing the hushed reverence with which people recite the history invented by the regime to keep itself in power. Often, the group did not understand what they were seeing: from the empty five-lane motorway to the missing fifth floor of their Yanggakdo Hotel on an island in the Pudong River; many answers only came through extensive research of the few sources that exist about this hermit country. Shocking and scary, The Sun Tyrant uncovers the oddities and tragedies at the heart of the world's most secretive regime, and shows what happens when a population is reduced to near-slavery in the twenty-first century.

This book was released on 2019-02-19 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kommos, located on the south coast of Crete, is widely known for its important sanctuary of the Greek period for its earlier role as a major Minoan harbortown. Volumes II and III in this series, dealing with the Minoan pottery, have already been published. Volume I, Part I (1995), offered a general introduction to the site, followed by chapters on the archaeological exploration of the area, its geology, fauna and flora, land use, as well as on the Minoan implements and indsutries. Now Volume I, Part II introduces the Kommos town (Joseph W. Shaw), and analyzes and interprets the houses on the hilltop (Maria C. Shaw and Lucia F. Nixon) and hillside (James C. Wright and John McEnroe). There is a catalog of miscellaneous finds from the houses (Mary K. Dabney, Katherine A. Schwab, Maria C. Shaw, John Bennet, Helene Whittaker, David Reese, and Olga Kryszowska), followed by synthetic chapters on town planning and domesetic architecture (Maria C. Shaw) and site development (Joseph W. Shaw). Combined, the interrelated Kommos volumes present an unusually thorough, interdisciplinary interpretation of a prehistoric site in Greece. An excavation by the University of Toronto and the Royal Ontario Museum under the auspices of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. Originally published in 1996. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following two decades of excavations and research at the NAN Ranch Ruin in southwestern New Mexico, Harry Shafer offers new information and interpretations of the rise and disappearance of the ancient Mimbres culture that thrived in the area from about A.D. 600 to 1140. The NAN Ranch site gives evidence of a fascinating restructuring of Mimbres culture and society, owing to the introduction of irrigation agriculture in the late ninth century. The social restructuring that accompanied this shift in technology resulted in changes that are visible in architecture, mortuary practices, and ceramic decoration. The NAN Ranch ruin has yielded the largest body of evidence ever gathered at a single Mimbres site and thus offers the clearest picture to date of who the ancient Mimbreños were in relation to their Anasazi and Hohokam neighbors to the north and east. Shafer introduces us to the Mimbres people, gives a history of archaeological research in the Mimbres Valley, and traces the occupation of the NAN Ranch site from pithouses to classic pueblo to abandonment. Social customs, subsistence, biological information, and the symbolism of the distinctive Mimbres designs in their ceramics, pottery, stone artifacts, textiles, and jewelry are all addressed in this comprehensive survey.

Book excerpt: Nero's palace, the Domus Aurea (Golden House), is the most influential known building in the history of Roman architecture. It has been incompletely studied and poorly understood ever since its most important sections were excavated in the 1930s. In this book, Larry Ball provides systematic investigation of the Domus Aurea, including a comprehensive analysis of the masonry, the design, and the abundant ancient literary evidence. Highlighting the revolutionary innovations of the Domus Aurea, Ball also outlines their wide-ranging implications for the later development of Roman concrete architecture.
