As Rookwood Was not imitating other wares, but starting as a pioneer along new lines, it had to Work out its own processes and its own style. Instead of importing foreign decorators with fixed methods Rookwood gathered to itself a staff of American artists and bravely set out to solve its own problems. These artists year after year progressed in mastering the new decorative medium, making their own technique and working out 'styles so individual that signatures upon the pieces are hardly needed to identify them. Rookwood and the American Indian: Masterpieces of American Art Pottery from the James J.
