Book excerpt: Eric Fernie presents a chronological survey of Romanesque architecture and the political systems that gave rise to the style. It is known for its massiv quality, thick walls, round arches, piers, groin vaults, large towers, and decorative arcading, as well as the measured articulation of volumes and surfaces. Romanesque architecture was also, at the time of its greatest popularity in the 11th and 12th centuries, the first destinctive style to dominate western and central Europe. The book includes an exploration of the gestation of the style in the 9th and 10th centuries and its survival in competition with the Gothic up to the 14th century.

This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Conant's detailed studies of Santiago de Compostela and of the abbey church at Cluny fit him for this account of building in the period of the round arch which preceeded Gothic. In this volume he shows how, at the instigation of the monasteries during the little renaissance of Charlemagne, Roman methods of construction were revived and fused with local traditions to produce a distinctive Carolingian manner; and how such monuments as the Palatine Chapel at Aachen already contained hints of the nobler and more mature Romanesque style which was to become international. professor Conant extends his survey to cover the regions of medieval France, Spain, Portugal, the Holy Land, Italy, Germany, Northern Europe, and Britain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Renaissance of Roman Architecture, Vol. 3 This volume concludes the series in which I have tried to give a connected history of Post-Roman Architecture in Europe, from the fall of the Western Empire to the full development of the Classic Renaissance in the 18th century. Though these several volumes may be read as independent works, treating of each period separately, they are meant to be taken in connexion, and to give a consecutive account of the Art in all its changes; to show how they arose from one another, and to trace a reason for them. In following the story through the period of Byzantine and Romanesque architecture, through the great age of the Gothic style that grew out of it, and through the violent revolution in art which revived the study of Roman Architecture, and which we call the Renaissance, I have studied to explain the progress from style to style by the social changes which affected society at each period, and of which the art was the expression and illustration. It is only in this way that the art of Western Europe can properly be understood. The Renaissance in France took a line of its own, influenced by the strong national feeling characteristic of the people. It was derived from Italy, where the Renaissance had been working for eighty years before it was heard of in France, and at first the new art was practised by Italians.
