Download or read book Rocky Lives! written by David E. Finger and published by Potomac Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boxing fans love the upset, seeing the underdog surprise the heavy favorite and take the fight to him, winning over the fans and--perhaps even more important--the judges. Sylvester Stallone mined that emotion through his long series of Rocky films. Rocky is fiction, however. The men in Rocky Lives! are real. David E. Finger, a writer for top boxing website FightNews.com, presents chronologically seventy-five heavyweight boxing upsets of the 1990s. Some involve boxers still fighting today; others contain a cautionary tale of once-great boxers chasing one last payday. There are also the early-round disasters of wannabes and athletes who switched to boxing in midstream. From the Tyson-Douglas, Foreman-Moorer, and Lewis-McCall top-dollar fights to low-level curiosities like former New York Jet Mark Gastineau getting embarrassed or Eric "Butterbean" Esch taking to the ring, David Finger presents the best heavyweight upsets the 1990s have to offer. You'll read about crooked promoters drugging opponents, a convicted felon hoping victory in the ring will win him leniency, and a forty-five-year-old preacher looking to exorcise a two-decade-old demon. Rocky Lives! brings all the knockouts and slugfests right into your home.

Download or read book Life Inside written by Mindy Lewis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-03-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The patient is an ascetically pretty 15½-year-old white female. She is intelligent, fearful, extremely anxious, and depressed. Her rage is poorly controlled and inappropriately expressed. Diagnostic Impression: Program for social recovery in a supportive and structured environment appears favorable. Life Inside In 1967, three months before her sixteenth birthday, Mindy Lewis was sent to a state psychiatric hospital by court order. She had been skipping school, smoking pot, and listening to too much Dylan. Her mother, at a loss for what else to do, decided that Mindy remain in state custody until she turned eighteen and became a legal, law-abiding, "healthy" adult. Life Inside is Mindy's story about her coming-of-age during those tumultuous years. In honest, unflinching prose, she paints a richly textured portrait of her stay on a psychiatric ward -- the close bonds and rivalries among adolescent patients, the politics and routines of institutional life, the extensive use of medication, and the prevalence of life-altering misdiagnoses. But this memoir also takes readers on a journey of recovery as Lewis describes her emergence into adulthood and her struggle to transcend the stigma of institutionalization. Bracingly told, and often terrifying in its truths, Life Inside is a life-affirming memoir that informs as it inspires.

Book Synopsis Why Philosophy Matters by : Raymond Angelo Belliotti
Download or read book Why Philosophy Matters written by Raymond Angelo Belliotti and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-18 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates that philosophy matters to everyday living and that people who ignore the enduring, fundamental questions of life thereby unwittingly relinquish part of their humanity. The question – “How should I live my life?” – along with cosmological inquiries about the nature of the world, animated Western philosophy during its earliest recorded years. Given that belief in the Greek and Roman gods failed to provide substantive guidelines for everyday living, philosophy arose in large measure as practical instruction in the art of living the good human life. Throughout history, philosophers have provided vastly different answers to the question of what constitutes such a life. By analyzing carefully their disparate definitions, recipes, and accounts of the good human life we can understand better who we are and who we might be. This work examines the answers provided by over thirty philosophers to aspects of building character, forging personal relations, promoting sound political strategies, living meaningfully, and dying gracefully. In so doing, over twenty lessons for living a worthy life emerge.

Download or read book My Life written by Bill Moshofsky and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I tell about my boyhood in the 1920s and 1930s on a small farm, living in relative poverty (by current living standards), when I wouldn’t have dreamed that I would have the life that I have lived: – a law school degree from the University of Oregon – a successful and interesting career – an enjoyable family life with four children despite the loss of two wives to cancer – combat in WWII and military service in the Korean War – extensive involvement with government (state and federal) – interesting experiences with foreign governments—The Bahamas, Ecuador, Indonesia, and Iran – involvement in the Rockefeller for President campaigns that could have changed history – historic battles over land use planning and workmen’s compensation at the state and federal levels – campaigns for Congress in 1982 and 1984 – over twenty years as a volunteer with Oregonians In Action, fi ghting for property rights and reforming Oregon’s badly fl awed land use system – extensive travels all over the world, except the continent of Africa In the last chapter, I write about my outlook on the future of this country. I comment on the Moshofsky children’s rise from poverty to prosperity and the huge technological advances after my boyhood in the 1920s, which were made possible by the free market, private enterprise system. I warn that the system is in jeopardy because of the fl awed policies of the Obama administration, and urge everyone to do everything they can to be sure that he is a one-term president. I have included in the APPENDIX a speech I gave in 1972 on environmental extremism, a 1975 article on excessive government intrusion in land use, and my Jobs for Oregon program in my 1982 campaign for Congress.
