Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This format is designed to be read on color devices and cannot be read on black-and-white e-readers. In the second Adventure Zone graphic novel (adapted from the McElroy family's wildly popular D&D podcast), we rejoin hero-adjacent sort-of-comrades-in-arms Taako, Magnus, and Merle on a wild careen through a D&D railroad murder mystery. This installment has a little of everything: a genius child detective, an axe-wielding professional wrestler, a surly wizard, cursed magical artifacts, and a pair of meat monsters. You know, the usual things you find on a train. Hot on the heels of The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins, the smash hit graphic novel that launched the series, The Adventure Zone: Murder on the Rockport Limited! picks up the saga where volume 1 left off. Both books are based on "The Adventure Zone," a tabletop RPG comedy podcast with downloads numbering in the tens of millions and an army of passionately devoted fans. With art and co-adaptation from Carey Pietsch, the McElroys are once again turning their raucous freewheeling D&D campaign into some damn fine comics.

Book excerpt: When Coastal Living Magazine listed Rockport, Texas, among its "Top 10 Artists' Colonies"--grouping the Texas community with such destinations as Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, and Monhegan Island, Maine--eyebrows lifted in many parts of the country. But for those in the know, Rockport's inclusion represented the logical result of the area's unique land- and seascapes, its welcoming climate, and its tradition of providing a haven for creativity and individuality. The story begins with well-known portrait photographer Louis de Planque, who lived in Rockport in the late nineteenth century, and includes Annie Fulton Holden, who painted a portrait of the first governor of Texas that hung in the state Capitol until fire destroyed it in 1881. In the many decades since, a host of artists, art educators, and art historians have called the Rockport-Fulton area home, including contemporary and influential artists, instructors, and gallerists such as Herb Booth, Meredith Long, and Simon Michael, teacher of Dalhart Windberg. In The Story of the Rockport-Fulton Art Colony: How a Coastal Texas Town Became an Art Enclave, Kay Kronke Betz and Vickie Moon Merchant chronicle how this small Texas town, whose economy was based on fishing, shrimping, and tourism, became a major regional center for the visual arts. Generously illustrated throughout with full-color images of boats, bays, birds, and other hallmarks of this artistically rich community, this book is a visual and narrative treat for art lovers, conservationists, and historians alike.

Book excerpt: The book tells the overall story of how the telegraph got its start via a landline across the country with its expansion in the 1850s across the Atlantic Ocean from New England northwest to Nova Scotia, to Newfoundland and eventually west to Ireland and finally to Europe and beyond. We explain how the cable is made and operates and gets laid underwater by enormous cable laying ships and eventually to cable stations around the world all conceived by a dreamer by the name of Cyrus W. Field resulting in messages to travel in seconds by electric cable which once took weeks across the ocean by ship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As we approach the end of a century, this new book looks back at over one hundred years of Camden's and Rockport's history, with photographs of the people, places, and events which have defined the proud and vibrant communities we know so well today. Author and local resident Barbara Dyer has collected over two hundred old photographs and postcards of Camden, Rockport, and the surrounding area which range from the late 1800s to the 1950s. These delightful images show buildings long gone and others which are still familiar features of the local landscape; they bring to life events both catastrophic and celebratory from the fascinating history of these beautiful coastal communities. Most of all, the photographs introduce us to the ordinary folk who lived, loved, worked, and had fun in these tight-knit towns: fishermen, sailors, store owners, teachers, schoolchildren, and hundreds of others whose lives are such an integral part of the story of Camden and Rockport.

Book excerpt: When Coastal Living Magazine listed Rockport, Texas, among its “Top 10 Coastal Artists’ Colonies” with more well-known art communities such as Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, and Monhegan Island, Maine, many art lovers may have been surprised. But Rockport’s inclusion represented an emerging Texas Gulf Coast aesthetic and regional school of landscape art that many art historians and collectors had discovered. The area’s unique ecosystem, abundance of wildlife and quaint architecture of bait stands and fish houses became a haven for creativity and individuality, beginning in the late forties. Over the years, it became home to influential artists, including the colony founder, Simon Michael, his most famous student, Dalhart Windberg, Jack Cowan, Al Barnes, Herb Booth, and Jesus Moroles. Other prominent artists also came for inspiration, including Buck Schiwetz, Harold Phenix, and Kent Ullberg. Many of the artists were active in early environmental organizations like the Coastal Conservation Association and Ducks Unlimited, working to protect the special habitats. And Steve Russell, a Rockport native, became the legendary mentor and quintessential artist of the colony, inspiring generations of newcomers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The towns of Camden and Rockport have had a rich, intertwined history since the first settlements in the mid-1700s. Until 1891, they were one town, built on the abundant natural resources of coastal Maine. Many residents in the early 19th century were farmers that carved out a living from the soil, or fishermen that harvested the teeming waters of Penobscot Bay. As the towns grew, successful industries were established that sustained the communities through the mid-20th century. These included fishing, textile mills, lime manufacturing, an anchor factory, and shipbuilding. Majestic schooners were built in the shipyards, and businesses such as the Bay View House hotel, S.B. Haskell's clothing store, numerous livery stables and harness shops, Joseph Brewster's Shirt Manufactory, and Knowlton Brothers Foundry lined the main thoroughfares. In Rockport, the Shepherd Company supplied lime, and the Rockport Ice Company cut ice on Lily Pond to be shipped as far as the Caribbean. These tight-knit villages, nestled "where the mountains meet the sea," weathered fires and wars, celebrated the launches of massive sailing vessels, and welcomed summer "rusticators" who helped form a lasting legacy of arts, culture, and learning that continues to draw visitors today.
