Previous experimental work in the area is examined and used as the foundation for the experiments in this thesis to establish the significant factors of a successful lightning-triggering station. Using a point charge model, computer simulations were performed to determine the most probable locations of the charge centers associated with the triggered discharge. Five electric field records obtained from field mills were used to perform this simulation. A full scale test technique configuration is proposed for subjecting representative Air Force subsystems and components to the lightning threat. A conclusion is drawn that such a system is feasible at Mt. Baldy, New Mexico with minor augmentations of the existing facilities of the Langmuir laboratory. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1981 progress of the Rocket Triggered Lightning Investigation program is reported. In a Lightning Strike Object (LSO) was designed, fabricated and instrumented. A Lightning Strike Scaffold capable of elevating the LSO above the ground plane was constructed atop South Baldy Mountain, near Socorro, New Mexico. During the summer thunderstorm season, the LSO was hoisted into the Strike Scaffold and was subjected to over forty nearby and attached triggered lightning strikes. The recorders available for the 1981 program were insufficiently responsive to provide high quality data on lightning interaction characteristics; however, all sensors and data links where proved to be operable. The primary finding was that lightning-object interaction data can be reliably and repeatedly acquired through the directing of triggered lightning to an instrumented target object. The report includes a detailed description of the system developed for the program, a discussion of system limitations, and results of the effort as of September 1981.

Due to its complex nature, research continues in many countries and reveals amazing results. Lightning is actively observed because of its relevance to Earth climate and air composition in addition to the classical aspects of related human fatalities and damage to forests, buildings, power lines, aircraft, structures and electronic devices. In this volume, the most important contemporary questions on lightning are addressed and analyzed under many experimental and theoretical aspects. Lightning detection techniques using ground-based and space-borne methods are described, along with network engineering and statistical analysis. Contributions detail research on atmospheric electricity, cloud physics, lightning physics, modeling of electrical storms and middle atmospheric events. Special phenomena such as triggered lightning and sprite observations are examined. Lightning-induced nitrogen oxides and their effects on atmospheric chemistry and climate are discussed. Each topic is presented by international experts in the field. Topics include: * air chemistry * convective storms * infrasound from lightning * lightning and climate change * lightning and precipitation * lightning and radiation * lightning and supercells * lightning and thunderstorms * lightning detection * lightning from space * lighting protection * lightning return strokes * observations and interpretations * spatial distribution and frequency * triggered lightning * weather extremes

The locations of the main charge regions are found to vary based on the convective stage of the thunderstorm. The main negative charge region is found near the altitude of the 0 C level, typically located between 4 and 5 km, in dissipating thunderstorms. The evolution of the line charge density of the unbranched portion of two upward positive leaders (UPL) is calculated using LMA derived three-dimensional speed and measured channel-base current. The calculated line charge densities of the UPLs are found to increase as a function of time and altitude. The electric field changes due to the UPLs are modeled using the calculated line charge densities and compared to the measured electric field changes. The modeled electric field changes are found to be greater than the measured electric field changes for both UPLs studied.

Book excerpt: The modeling of the sferic waveform is carried on using the Long Wavelength Propagation Capability (LWPC) code developed by the Naval Ocean Systems Center over a period of many years. In order to do so, certain parameters are needed like the current waveform of the lightning and the ionospheric electron density profiles over the path of propagation. This work assumes that the lightning strike is a vertical dipole discharge and that the ionosphere is homogenous throughout the path of propagation. Realistic ionospheric electron density profiles were created using data from the International Reference Ionosphere (IRI), and realistic ground conductivity and permittivity profiles were considered that take into account different kinds of ground like land, sea, and ice. The end result is the successful modeling of the time-domain magnetic field signature of a lightning strike triggered at the ICLRT after propagating more than 14 Mm to Arrival Heights at McMurdo Station, Antarctica. These theoretical results may be directly compared with future experimental observations.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT (cont.): It is shown that, if the transmission line model is applicable at early times in the triggered lightning return stroke process, the electric and magnetic radiation field components become the largest components beyond distances of about 15 m but are not dominant for distances less than 100 m. The experimental data presented indicate that measured dE/dt, dB/dt, and dI/dt waveshapes are very similar for the first 150 ns or so after the initiation of the return stroke. It is shown that, based on transmission line modeling, the waveshapes of the dE/dt and dB/dt rising edges are relatively invariant for a return stroke speed v greater than or equal to 2*10 to the 8th power m/s and, further, that the total waveshapes are exactly the same for v = c. Additionally, it is shown that the dE/dt and dB/dt waveshapes do not depend much on channel inclination from the vertical, for inclinations less than 20 degrees and return stroke speeds higher than 10 to the 8th power m/s. The TLM models the electric field derivatives well when the observed inclined channel with its base at the strike rod base or a slightly shifted channel origin is assumed.
