When Kerrang! magazine nominated them in 2008, 2009 and 2010 for ‘Best British Band’, it indicated they were one of the top acts out there. And when they finally won the coveted title in 2011, and then again in 2014, it proved it. This is the first biography of You Me At Six, looking deep into what makes the band tick and why they have become such an iconic band in a relatively short period of time. Their strict work ethic and innovative nature have gained them a loyal fan base that goes beyond the word ‘cult’. Having toured extensively around Europe, Australia and also North America, You Me At Six are one of alternative rock’s most exhilarating live bands. At a time when many British rock fans are looking to the United States for inventive alternative rock, You Me At Six prove that there is a still an abundance of talent being nurtured closer to home. Now updated to celebrate the release of the Number 1 album Cavalier Youth, Never Hold An Underdog Down charts the rise of the Surrey band; the stories behind the making of their albums; their energetic stage performances and their musical heroes. You Me At Six prove that you can’t hold an underdog down.

This book shows the birth and rise of the monster known as Metallica and will link the band and the American metal scene with the famed New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement in the UK and metal originators such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. Metallica s early success was built on strong live performances and fierce thrash metal riffs. With the remarkable passion and drive of drummer/founder Lars Ulrich, Metallica became the biggest American metal band in the world and the legacy of those first four albums Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets and ...And Justice For All lives on to this day. American thrash metal produced four major bands Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax dubbed the Big Four, but out of that unholy collective, Metallica were kings. This book tells the story of how that remarkable global triumph started, with interviews with people who were there, saw those early gigs and numerous other eye-witnesses to the incredible story. This is the first book to explore the early years of Metallica, containing exclusive and original interviews with key players and the journalists that brought Metallica to the UK. Burroughs's fiction and essays are legendary, but his influence on music's counterculture has been less well documented—until now. Examining how one of America's most controversial literary figures altered the destinies of many notable and varied musicians, William S. Burroughs and the Cult of Rock 'n' Roll reveals the transformations in music history that can be traced to Burroughs. A heroin addict and a gay man, Burroughs rose to notoriety outside the conventional literary world; his masterpiece, Naked Lunch, was banned on the grounds of obscenity, but its nonlinear structure was just as daring as its content. Casey Rae brings to life Burroughs's parallel rise to fame among daring musicians of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s, when it became a rite of passage to hang out with the author or to experiment with his cut-up techniques for producing revolutionary lyrics (as the Beatles and Radiohead did). Whether they tell of him exploring the occult with David Bowie, providing Lou Reed with gritty depictions of street life, or counseling Patti Smith about coping with fame, the stories of Burroughs's backstage impact will transform the way you see America's cultural revolution—and the way you hear its music.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On paper Steve Katz’s career rivals anyone’s except the 1960s’ and ’70’s biggest stars: the Monterey Pop Festival with the legendary Blues Project, Woodstock with Blood, Sweat & Tears, and even producing rock’s most celebrated speed addict, Lou Reed. There were world tours, and his résumé screams “Hall of Fame” — it won’t be long before BS&T are on that ballot. He has three Grammies (ten nominations), three Downbeat Reader’s Poll Awards, three gold records, one platinum record, and one quadruple platinum platter (the second Blood, Sweat & Tears album), not to mention three gold singles with BS&T. All together, he’s sold close to 29 million records. He had affairs with famous female folk singers, made love to Jim Morrison’s girlfriend Pam when Jim was drunk and abusive, partied with Elizabeth Taylor and Groucho Marx, dined with Rudolf Nureyev, conversed with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Tennessee Williams, hung out with Andy Warhol, jammed with everyone from Mose Allison to Jimi Hendrix, and was told to get a haircut by both Mickey Spillane and Danny Thomas. But his memoir is more Portnoy’s Complaint than the lurid party-with-your-pants-down memoir that has become the norm for rock ’n’ roll books. It’s an honest and personal account of a life at the edge of the spotlight—a privileged vantage point that earned him a bit more objectivity and earnest outrage than a lot of his colleagues, who were too far into the scene to lay any honest witness to it. Set during the Greenwich Village folk/rock scene, the Sixties’ most celebrated venues and concerts, and behind closed doors on international tours and grueling studio sessions, this is the unlikely story of a rock star as nerd, nerd as rock star, a nice Jewish boy who got to sit at the cool kid’s table and score the hot chicks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often regarded as the greatest frontman in the history of rock music, Bon Scott tragically died on February 19, 1980 but his memory lives through the music he created with AC/DC. From 1975 s Australian album High Voltage to 1980 s Highway To Hell, Bon Scott and AC/DC were a global force to be reckoned with. AC/DC formed in 1973 but it wasn’t until the latter half of 1974 that Scottish born singer Robert Belford Scott joined the fold. Scott would help take AC/DC to legendary heights of success. Although the band s success did not arrive quickly, they released a stream of stunning albums and were undoubtedly the most electrifying live rock band of the 1970s. Despite the latterday success of the band, the Bon Scott years of 1974 to 1980 are often regarded by many as the band s most fertile creative period. Those years spawned 1976 s Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, 1977 s Let There Be Rock and 1978 s Powerage, not forgetting the now legendary live album, If You Want Blood You’ve Got It from 1978. Exploring the two Australian albums, the five international studio albums as well as other releases featuring Bon Scott, this book AC/DC - The Early Years With Bon Scott is a fitting recognition of Bon Scott s legacy and a reminder of just how influential AC/DC s 1970s period remains. Charts the most creative period of the band s history from 1973 to Bon Scott s death in 1980. Includes a foreword from Uriah Heep’s Mick Box. Bonus chapter on Back In Black: the first album with Brian Johnson. Extensively covers AC/DC s five international albums and two Australia-only releases with Bon Scott. Perfect as a fans book as well as a book for AC/DC beginners. Bon Scott was voted the greatest frontman of all time by Classic Rock magazine. The most successful Aussie band of all time. A movie about Bon Scott s life is currently in production.

Stephen Cannell's reluctant white knights--put-upon private eye James Rockford, World War II fly-boys the Black Sheep Squadron, hapless superhero Ralph Hinckley, fugitive mercenaries the A-Team, and maverick cop Hunter--traversed the television landscape from the 1970s to the 1990s. Cannell changed the face of the action-adventure genre, updating the crime-show format with a hybrid of rebellious morality, juvenile wit, intelligent sarcasm, and radical conservatism. This book discusses in detail the programs of the writer-producer and lists every episode of his award-winning productions from the early 1970s to the early '90s. The book features publicity photos and descriptions of unsold pilots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the use of deadly force by private security companies during the Iraq War. The work focuses on and compares the activities of the US companies Blackwater and Dyncorp. Despite sharing several important characteristics, such as working for the same client (the US State Department) during the same time period, the employees of Blackwater fired their weapons far more often, and killed and seriously injured far more people in Iraq than their counterparts in DynCorp. In order to explain this disparity, the book undertakes the most comprehensive analysis ever attempted on the use of violence by the employees of these firms. Based on extensive empirical research, it offers a credible explanation for this difference: Blackwater maintained a relatively bellicose military culture that placed strong emphasis on norms encouraging its personnel to exercise personal initiative, proactive use of force, and an exclusive approach to security, which, together, motivated its personnel to use violence quite freely against anyone they suspected of posing a threat. Specifically, Blackwater’s military culture motivated its personnel to fire upon suspected threats more quickly, at greater distances, and with a greater quantity of bullets, and to more readily abandon the people they shot at when compared to DynCorp’s personnel, who maintained a military culture that encouraged far less violent behaviour. Utilizing the Private Security Company Violent Incident Dataset (PSCVID), created by the author in 2012, the book draws upon data on hundreds of violent incidents involving private security personnel in Iraq to identify trends in the behaviour exhibited by the employees of different firms. Based on this rich and original empirical data, the book provides the definitive study of contemporary private security personnel in the Iraq War. This book will be of much interest to students of the Iraq War, Private Security Companies, Military Studies, War and Conflict Studies and IR in general.

Book excerpt: 'A passionate, pacey tome you should do anything for a copy of' - Kerrang! **** "I never wanted to be a big star. I just wanted to be the biggest at what I do! Powerful, unstoppable, heavy - when that word still meant something good!" - Meat Loaf, as told to Mick Wall Everything in the story of Meat Loaf is big. From the place he was born (Texas); to the family he was born into (his father weighed 22 stone, his uncle weighed over 40 stone, while Meat Loaf himself weighed 17 stone before he was even in his teens); to the sound he made (a colossal collision between Richard Wagner, Phil Spector and Bruce Springsteen); and of course the records he sold - nearly 50 million in Britain and America alone. Now, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of Bat Out of Hell, the album that gave rise to Meat Loaf's astonishing career, and the premiere of Bat Out Of Hell: The Musical, Mick Wall, who has interviewed Meat Loaf on numerous occasions throughout his career, pulls back the curtains to reveal the soft-hearted soul behind the larger-than-life character he created for himself. From a tumultuous childhood with an alcoholic father to the relentless abusive bullying he endured, nobody could have predicted Meat Loaf's meteoric rise to fame. But when the messianic rock opera Bat Out of Hell was released in 1977, it became one of the biggest albums of all time, selling over 45 million copies worldwide to date. Its release marked the start of a rollercoaster ride of incredible highs and seemingly career-ending lows. By the 80s, Meat Loaf was battling with drug and alcohol addiction and escalating money problems that would eventually lead to a nervous breakdown. But just when it seemed like it was all over, the astonishing success of Bat Out of Hell II and the mega-hit 'I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)' marked an extraordinary new wave of success. Now, Mick Wall will bring this extraordinary story up to date, drawing on the hours he spent with Meat Loaf, both in interviews and on tour, as well as offering up a unique insight from those who have known him best.
