Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garrett Chatfield Pier Collection of Egyptian Antiquities Formerly Exhibited at Yale University: Greek and Etruscan Pottery, Syro-Roman Glass, Oriental Rugs, Property of Various Owners However, it is in the field of New Empire glazed pottery - much of it of historical interest - that the collection excels. We refer to the fai'ence objects said to have come from the site of the ruined palace of King Amenhotep III, which once stood beside a broad artificial lake that the Pharaoh dug for his foreign wife, Queen Thiy, south of those two giant statues on the west bank, Opposite Luxor, commonly designated the Colossi. Among the series of his torical objects connected with this site (once excavated by the Metropolitan Museum of Art) we may refer to such inlaid faience necklace pendants and other objects as [numbers 99, 104, 85, 86, and the last an especially beautiful pendant, perhaps worn by the lovely Thiy herself. In fact, the frag mentary stibium tube [number 101] may be the very eye-paint holder used by the famous queen in life, for the expression she liveth, inscribed below her name, proves that this charmingly inlaid little relic was in no sense funerary in character. However, the better to appreciate the variety and completeness of material which distinguishes the collection, one must turn to the series of jeweled amulets and necklaces, in which every form of Egyptian stone is shown, and the full gamut of the Egyptian jewelers' gem-material exemplified, from the early Middle Kingdom (c. 1950 b.c.) to the Roman occupation of the country. Here, for example, are specimens of the world's first glass [number 202] and a strand of rich fa'ience beads and amulets [number 200] which reveals the sudden change in taste inaugurated by the 'heretic' King Ikhtenaton, who taught the artists of his day to turn to nature for their inspiration and no longer to be fettered by the hieratic forms foistered upon them by an all powerful priesthood. The rich strand of beads and amulets represented in Number 188 and the necklaces catalogued under Numbers 199, 206, 208, 207, 215, and 209 exemplify the materials in use by the ancient Egyptian lapidary. All are what we are accustomed to call semi-precious in character. Yet, together with the turquoise - very rarely met with - such was the precious jewel material of that date. Here we cannot go into the subject of Egyptian jewels in great detail. But mention should be made of the unique strand of brilliantly polished hematite beads [number centred by the splendid ram's-head pendant carved in the same rare and intractable material, and the exquisite shell - form gems [number which are reputed once to have formed part )f the treasure of the famous princess Ist-em-kheb.
