Download or read book Transcend written by Ray Kurzweil and published by Rodale. This book was released on 2010-12-21 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Transcend, famed futurist Ray Kurzweil and his coauthor Terry Grossman, MD, present a cutting edge, accessible program based on the vanguard in nutrition and science. They’ve distilled thousands of scientific studies to make the case that new developments in medicine and technology will allow us to radically extend our life expectancies and slow the aging process. Transcend gives you the practical tools you need to live long enough (and remain healthy long enough) to take full advantage of the biotech and nanotech advances that have already begun and will continue to occur at an accelerating pace during the years ahead. To help you remember the nine key components of the program, Ray and Terry have arranged them into a mnemonic: Talk with your doctor, Relaxation, Assessment, Nutrition, Supplements, Calorie reduction, Exercise, New technologies, Detoxification. This easy-to-follow program will help you transcend the boundaries of your genetic legacy and live long enough to live forever.

Download or read book Robert Ryman written by Robert Ryman and published by Peter Blum Editions. This book was released on 2004 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works in this exhibition catalogue record the time when Robert Ryman, then in his early twenties, was formulating his disciplined approach to painting. On off-white and translucent materials including wallpaper, a circular coffee filter, newsprint and mylar, Ryman drew, tooled, brushed and pressed his marks using a flat table to support the work. His decision to use the square as a consistent format for non-narrative work was set, and while he sporadically used color in these earliest works, he subsequently chose white almost exclusively in the process of eliminating all that was superfluous to a painting.

Truman Black-Iron's escape from slavery left his soul unfettered by festering bitterness. His heroism and sense of righteousness and generosity command respect, as he embraces the value of all humanity, rescuing white and black soldiers equally. Each generation of the Black-Iron family yields a Truman, who is a function of his legacy, his prophetic gift. Imminent peril awaits each Truman Black-Iron, as murder, espionage, war, lusty and forbidden sex, drugs, scandal, love and betrayal encumber their respective lives.

Download or read book Cultivating Spirituality written by Mark L. Blum and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2013-03-02 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four Shin Buddhist thinkers reflect on their traditions encounter with modernity. Cultivating Spirituality is a seminal anthology of Shin Buddhist thought, one that reflects this traditions encounter with modernity. Shin (or Jod? Shinsh?) is a popular form of Pure Land Buddhism, the most widely practiced form of Buddhism in Japan, but is only now becoming well known in the West. The lives of the four thinkers included in the book spanned the years 18631982, from the Meiji opening to the West to Japans establishment as an industrialized democracy and world economic power. Kiyozawa Manshi, Soga Ry?jin, Kaneko Daiei, and Yasuda Rijin, all associated with Kyotos ?tani University, dealt with the spiritual concerns of a society undergoing great change. Their philosophical orientation known as Seishinshugi (cultivating spirituality) provides a set of principles that prioritized personal, subjective experience as the basis for religious understanding. In addition to providing access to work generally unavailable in English, this volume also includes both a contextualizing introduction and introductions to each figure included. Buddhism, whether in Asia or the West, reveals itself to be a rich tapestry of diverse strands in which pioneers risked their standing and even their very lives to establish new pathways appropriate for their times and places. The editors invite the reader to explore developments in Japanese Pure Land Buddhism as emblematic of this tradition of innovation. Buddhadharma

Blum and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a hospital physician it is impossible to escape the notion that the difficult medical problems one encounters are also being confronted by other' physicians throughout the world. It is equally apparent that without special effort one's own patient observations will not be shared with others. Without the medical literature there would be almost no meaningful shadng of experience. Medical textbooks and journals contain reports of the latest tests and treatments. from university hospitals and research centers. There are, however, definite limitations to the medical literature. First. the literature records only a miniscule and highly select portion of medical experience. Second, because of this selectivity, it may be difficult to apply the findings and recommendations in the literature to one's own patients. One serious consequence of these characteristics of the medical literature is that patients are largely overtreated. Tests and treatments are over-prescribed, and adverse effe

Book excerpt: “Sarah Stewart Johnson interweaves her own coming-of-age story as a planetary scientist with a vivid history of the exploration of Mars in this celebration of human curiosity, passion, and perseverance.”—Alan Lightman, author of Einstein’s Dreams WINNER OF THE PHI BETA KAPPA AWARD FOR SCIENCE • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY The New York Times Book Review • Times (UK) • Library Journal “Lovely . . . Johnson’s prose swirls with lyrical wonder, as varied and multihued as the apricot deserts, butterscotch skies and blue sunsets of Mars.”—Anthony Doerr, The New York Times Book Review Mars was once similar to Earth, but today there are no rivers, no lakes, no oceans. Coated in red dust, the terrain is bewilderingly empty. And yet multiple spacecraft are circling Mars, sweeping over Terra Sabaea, Syrtis Major, the dunes of Elysium, and Mare Sirenum—on the brink, perhaps, of a staggering find, one that would inspire humankind as much as any discovery in the history of modern science. In this beautifully observed, deeply personal book, Georgetown scientist Sarah Stewart Johnson tells the story of how she and other researchers have scoured Mars for signs of life, transforming the planet from a distant point of light into a world of its own. Johnson’s fascination with Mars began as a child in Kentucky, turning over rocks with her father and looking at planets in the night sky. She now conducts fieldwork in some of Earth’s most hostile environments, such as the Dry Valleys of Antarctica and the salt flats of Western Australia, developing methods for detecting life on other worlds. Here, with poetic precision, she interlaces her own personal journey—as a female scientist and a mother—with tales of other seekers, from Percival Lowell, who was convinced that a utopian society existed on Mars, to Audouin Dollfus, who tried to carry out astronomical observations from a stratospheric balloon. In the process, she shows how the story of Mars is also a story about Earth: This other world has been our mirror, our foil, a telltale reflection of our own anxieties and yearnings. Empathetic and evocative, The Sirens of Mars offers an unlikely natural history of a place where no human has ever set foot, while providing a vivid portrait of our quest to defy our isolation in the cosmos.
