Book Synopsis Terror on the Highway by : Paul Eberle
Download or read book Terror on the Highway written by Paul Eberle and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-04-26 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A doctor chases, then assaults an elderly woman after she cuts in front of his BMW; a teenager shoots another driver because the driver "looked at him with disrespect"; one man kills another because "he was driving too slow." These are a few of the many examples of extreme road rage documented by Paul Eberle in this shocking look at the havoc caused by angry people in their cars. Eberle makes it clear that young and old, men and women, and all socioeconomic classes are involved in this epidemic of rage and violence on our highways. In 1998, the California Highway Patrol recorded 209 incidents of Assault with a Deadly Weapon in which a motor vehicle was the weapon used, and in the same year the media reported more than 4,000 stories on road rage nationwide. Since then, the problem has only gotten worse.Eberle lists the warning signs of potential road-rage drivers, suggests ways to avoid such dangerous individuals, discusses the psychology of the car as "holy icon" and the effects of traffic congestion on "mad car disease," expresses skepticism about psychologists specializing in aggressive driving, and proposes ways to reinvent our cities to make them less stressful, dangerous places.Complete with graphic pictures showing the dire consequences of driving while enraged, Terror on the Highway should be mandatory reading in all driver education classes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go. –T. S. Eliot We all take risks. Individually, we may decide to marry or just leave the house. Such decisions are often made subjectively without any quantitative analysis. Communities take risks when they decide not to build protection against flooding. Nations take risks when they invest in other countries or go to war. The human race take risk with its acceptance of the balance of nuclear power or global warming as a policy for peace. The acceptance of risk by individuals is often very different from the acceptance of the same type of risk by groups. This book discusses different aspects of risk together with some choices and presents examples to enlighten the reader. The author has written books on topics such as earthquakes hazard assessment and risk analysis.

Book Synopsis Mobility without Mayhem by : Jeremy Packer
Download or read book Mobility without Mayhem written by Jeremy Packer and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2008-02-26 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Americans prize the ability to get behind the wheel and hit the open road, they have not always agreed on what constitutes safe, decorous driving or who is capable of it. Mobility without Mayhem is a lively cultural history of America’s fear of and fascination with driving, from the mid-twentieth century to the present. Jeremy Packer analyzes how driving has been understood by experts, imagined by citizens, regulated by traffic laws, governed through education and propaganda, and represented in films, television, magazines, and newspapers. Whether considering motorcycles as symbols of rebellion and angst, or the role of CB radio in regulating driving and in truckers’ evasions of those regulations, Packer shows that ideas about safe versus risky driving often have had less to do with real dangers than with drivers’ identities. Packer focuses on cultural figures that have been singled out as particularly dangerous. Women drivers, hot-rodders, bikers, hitchhikers, truckers, those who “drive while black,” and road ragers have all been targets of fear. As Packer debunks claims about the dangers posed by each figure, he exposes biases against marginalized populations, anxieties about social change, and commercial and political desires to profit by fomenting fear. Certain populations have been labeled as dangerous or deviant, he argues, to legitimize monitoring and regulation and, ultimately, to curtail access to automotive mobility. Packer reveals how the boundary between personal freedom and social constraint is continually renegotiated in discussions about safe, proper driving.

Book Synopsis Emergency Management and Telemedicine for Everyone by : Eamon Doherty Ph.D, Gary Stephenson,
Download or read book Emergency Management and Telemedicine for Everyone written by Eamon Doherty Ph.D, Gary Stephenson, and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2006-04-20 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the fundamentals of emergency management. The four phases of emergency management are discussed in detail throughout the book. These phases are mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery with respect to floods, earthquakes, storms, and other man made as well as natural disasters. This book uses easy to understand examples that also include populations such as senior citizens and the disabled. There are numerous chapters that show the progression of emergency management equipment and how it was used through the last four centuries in the United States. There is also a section on the atomic age which explains radiation, fallout, and some warning systems that are in place to warn the public in case of nuclear accidents such as Three Mile Island. There are also some never seen photos of Nagasaki shortly after the blast in World War Two. We will also meet Uncle Bob who sometimes worked in the hot zone and was later electrocuted, injured his spine, and was in a coma for a while. We will also discuss some of the issues with electrical burns too. Later chapters include the topic of telemedicine and the technology used in telemedicine. Telemedicine becomes important to serve rural communities around the world where people may not have access to quality health care usually available in cities.
