Book excerpt: Generally, hydrogen sulfide is not treated as a contaminant of concern in the regulatory evaluation of dredged material since it undergoes rapid oxidation and dilution during dredging and disposal. However, because dredged material is evaluated using effects-based testing (i.e., whole sediment and elutriate toxicity tests), there is the potential for H2S to exert toxicity and confound the regulatory decision-making process. To evaluate the potential for hydrogen sulfide toxicity in dredged material bioassays, a literature review and survey to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Divisions and Districts were conducted. Data included (a) reported environmental pore water exposure concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and (b) effects concentrations shown to cause toxicity in laboratory studies with aquatic species. While the majority (>60 percent) of reported environmental pore water concentrations were>100 micronMeter H2S/1, almost all (90 percent) of reported effects were found at concentrations 400 micronMeter HzS/1. This simple comparison of reported exposure and effects concentrations suggests that there is a strong Potential for hydrogen sulfide toxicity in dredged material bioassays. However, a number of biases in this limited data set are discussed that must be considered before any definitive conclusions can be drawn.

It is not treated as a contaminant of concern for the regulatory evaluation of dredged material since it undergoes rapid oxidation and dilution during dredging and disposal. Because dredged material is evaluated using effects-based tests (i.e., whole sediment and elutriate toxicity tests), there is the potential for ammonia to exert toxicity and confound the regulatory decision-making process. This report evaluates the potential for ammonia toxicity in dredged material bioassays.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ammonia and sulfide are natural constituents of sediment. Both are very toxic to aquatic organisms. Consequently, their presence may bias dredged material toxicity bioassays that are designed to evaluate the toxicity of persistent contaminants such as heavy metals and petroleum and chlorinated hydrocarbons. The purpose of this technical note is to summarize published information on sediment pore water ammonia and sulfide concentrations that occur in situ. In a subsequent technical note, this exposure information will be coupled with ammonia and sulfide toxicity data to estimate the potential influence of these constituents on dredged material toxicity bioassays.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to help engineers and scientists better understand contaminated sediment sites and identify and design remedial approaches that are more efficient and effective. Contaminated sediment management is a difficult and costly exercise that is rarely addressed with easily identified and implemented remedies. It is hoped that this book can help identify and implement management approaches that provide an optimal, if not entirely satisfactory, solution to sediment contaminant problems.

From selecting the right equipment, to evaluating environmental impact, to bidding on a project, Handbook of Dredging Engineering, Second Edition, is the last word on modern hydraulic dredging. Edited by John B. Herbich, with contributions by well-know experts in the field, the Handbook examines basic fluid mechanics; dredge pumps; dredging equipment; sediment; pipeline transport of solids; dredging methods; disposal and placement of dredged material; numerical models for predicting the fate of dredged material placed in open water; environmental effects of dredging activities; instrumentation and automation; and project planning. This vital new edition covers major advances made over the last seven years. Three chapters are new to this edition: numerical models for predicting the fate of dredged material...subaqueous capping of contaminated sediment...and removal of contaminated sediments by dredging, with illustrative case studies.
