Book excerpt: This book tells the story of one American family. Several family trees came together in two people, Blanche Klinefelter and Herbert Thomsonour grandparents. As writers, we are two grandsons who have corroborated to tell this story. Like weaving a tapestry, we have tried to interpret the story of our particular family in the context of unfolding European and American history. This is a book about our family and its stories. We write about eras long, long ago as well as times closer to the present day. As two cousins, we have two points-of-view about these times and places. As the French would have it, Vive la diffrence. It is easy to confuse family traditions with history. History is the enemy of memory. The two stalk each other across the fields of the past, claiming the same terrain. Remembered family stories trail off into forgotten places. Each in his own way, we are historians. We have benefited from each others approaches. Historians follow cautiously checking records. Memory can be misleading. But stories always have some basis in the past. The heart of our book is where the recollected stories and history meet.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For once, Linda Anne Monica Schneider now is writing strictly about what she does know: her life and its circumstances. She tells the story of what it has been like for a middle-class American descended from Italian and German immigrants. It is the story of a girl who grew up and found her law vocation during the 50’s through 70’s and who happens to be blind and hard of hearing. During her life, she has used a series of wonderful guide dogs as traveling companions. Like the two discouraged, disillusioned pilgrims who fled from Jerusalem after the death and still disbelieved resurrection of Jesus, she is still in the lifelong process of finding the Lord. This book updates and supersedes the earlier version published in 2012 under a slightly different title.

Book excerpt: It is 1944, and war is raging in Europe and Japan. Chuck is still in high school but his dream is to join the army and fight the Germans. One day, in the spring of 1944, he was walking on a lonely road and met someone that caused him to have another dream. This dream began when he met Betty Watson, the bank president's daughter. His good fortune began when, by a chance meeting, the Desoto she was driving had a flat tire. Her misfortune became Chuck's continuing desire to marry the girl of his dreams even though she was a few years older than he was. Although the two became good friends, Betty frequently reminded him that she had a boyfriend and that he was serving his country in the military. That information, although disheartening, did not keep Chuck from pursuing her. Betty and Chuck spent weeks together going places such as the bowling alley, the skating rink and the movies, while both insisted they were not dating. Chuck's older sister spilled the beans about the couple to his father who was not thrilled. His father suggested he date girls in school that were closer to his age but to no avail. Chuck had a one-track mind and that one track was Betty. In conversations between them Betty expressed doubt about a commitment from her soldier boyfriend and that was all the encouragement Chuck needed. After avoiding Chuck for several weeks, Betty confided in him that she was pregnant and her boyfriend, Bobby, was the father of the child. The announcement was a blow to him but Chuck was still not ready to give up on marrying her. However, when Betty's parents found out about her pregnancy, they shipped her off to California to have the baby and place it up for adoption. With one dream dimming the other was still very much alive. He graduated from high school and joined the army. Even though the war in Europe was winding down, the war in Japan was still very much alive. Chuck continued to write letters to Betty but at some point, her letters stopped. Chuck's interest in Betty had to be put on the back burner because of his military duties including guarding a brothel in Japan. After his discharge from the army Chuck attempted to rekindle their story but by that time Betty had married the father of her child. Even though he was still in love with Betty, he felt it was time for him to move on with his life. Where would he go from there?

Book excerpt: A Favourite of the Gods is the story of two generations of a single family, united by a strong matrilineal bond but divided by the customs of their differing nationalities. Anna Howland, the matriarch and American heiress, born in the 1870s to a prominent, liberal New England family marries an Italian prince and makes her home in Rome; her daughter Constanza, the favorite of the title, inherits her mother’s beauty, intelligence, and wealth, along with her father’s Catholicism, which she soon rejects. When disaster strikes, Anna and the prince fall back on the standards of behavior of their disparate cultures; Constanza, with her European upbringing, is free to plot her own course, and she does so with daring, making an unconventional life for herself in England and on the continent during and after the First World War. Her own daughter Flavia is the heroine of A Compass Error, which begins where the first novel concludes. Flavia too is a brilliant young woman, though both more brash and more faltering than her mother, studying for her entrance exam to Oxford when she becomes involved with a mysterious woman whose arrival at a sensitive moment in Flavia’s adolescence will alter both her and her mother’s lives forever.

Instructions for parents and teachers combine with hands-on lessons for their children. The parent/teacher portion of the book provides instruction and illustrations plus coaching notes with each page of the 37 student lessons. The student lessons take children from the reading and writing readiness stage to where they are effective and enthusiastic readers and writers. Each of the 37 lessons has a lesson word which includes the sounds and letters necessary to build phonemic awareness and letter/sound correspondence. The lesson words, letters, and sounds are introduced by the teacher, Mat the rat. Following Mat's introduction, the students learn to spell and sound the word. Each lesson embeds its lesson word in at least two stories or poems which are studied for reading comprehension. The lesson words also form the basis of a printing and handwriting activity. Finally, each lesson culminates with a composition activity based on the lesson word.

A LONG TRAIL ROLLING A dangerous job. Is it a convenient escape route... or a death trap? Winner of: True West 2016 Best Western Romance Romance Writers of New Zealand: 2014 Pacific Hearts Award and 2015 Koru Award UTAH TERRITORY, 1860. Alone. Aleksandra has spent her whole life training for the inevitable. So when a brutal Cossack tracks down and kills her father, she knows what she must do. Now orphaned, she flees, disguised as a Pony Express rider, in an attempt to keep her pa's killer from discovering their family's secret. Xavier has kept the world, especially women, at arms-length since he ran from his troubles as heir to his Californio rancho family. As a Pony Express Station Keeper, having a girl riding the Pony out of his station wasn't ever part of his plans... but somehow it happened, blackmail being what it is. Curiously, he didn't want to let this one out of his sight. They begin to let each other into their hearts, but the cards are stacking against them as the minutes tick by and Aleks rides full speed into the Indian Paiute War. Can they learn to trust in time to escape the Indians, evade the killer, and save both their love and Aleksandra's family legacy? A Long Trail Rolling is the first book in the sensational Long Trails historical fiction series. THE HILLS OF GOLD UNCHANGING As the Civil War rages, secessionists menace California. The Confederates want the state and they'll stop at nothing to take it. UTAH TERRITORY, 1860 On a wagon train headed for Xavier’s family rancho in the Golden State, Aleksandra makes a dangerous enemy of a gun-running Confederate when she fights her way out of his unwelcome embrace. After a late-night poker game, Xavier's new friends realize he’s heard too much to be allowed to live. Embroiled in the Confederates' fight to drag the new state from the Union and make it their own, can Aleks and Xavier survive? The secessionists mean business. The Hills of Gold Unchanging is the second book in the outstanding Long Trails historical fiction series. A SEA OF GREEN UNFOLDING They sail for the peace and calm of New Zealand, but they hadn’t counted on murderers, mutineers, and a land war in paradise. SAN FRANCISCO BAY AND NEW ZEALAND, 1863. Aleksandra and Xavier have finally found happiness on their Rancho de las Pulgas, but tragedy and death strike far too soon. Sickened further by the U.S. government’s treatment of their Native American friends, they only want out. Of everything. They are thrown a lifeline by an old friend of Xavier’s from the California goldfields. This Gustavus von Tempsky, with his shadowed past, is now a newspaperman in Coromandel, New Zealand. His invitation draws them to a new start, with a part to play in the development of the peaceful young country—but by the time they arrive in Aotearoa, everything has changed. Aleks thought mutineers and scoundrels aboard ship were the worst of their worries, but she hadn’t planned on disembarking into a turbulent wilderness and befriending the helpful local Māori, only to find von Tempsky leading the colonial troops into the bush against the natives who’d saved her life. A Sea of Green Unfolding is the third book in the fantastic Long Trails historical fiction series. If you like bold women, authentic multicultural settings, and a dash of Old West romance, then you’ll love Lizzi Tremayne’s fast-paced adventures!
