Book excerpt: "The large and sudden influx of missionaries into the former Soviet Union after seventy years of militant secularism has been controversial, and the widespread occurrence of conversion has led to anxiety about social and national disintegration. Although these concerns have been vigorously discussed in national arenas, social scientists have remained remarkably silent about the subject. This volume's focus on conversion offers a novel approach to the dislocations of the postsocialist experience. In eight well-researched ethnographic accounts the authors analyse a range of missionary encounters as well as aspects of conversion and 'anti-conversion' in different parts of the region, thus challenging the problematic idea that religious life after socialism involved a simple 'revival' of repressed religious traditions. Instead, they unravel the unexpected twists and turns of religious dynamics, and the processes that have challenged popular ideas about religion and culture. The contributions show how conversion is rooted in the disruptive qualities of the new 'capitalist experience' and document its unsettling effects on the individual and social level." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: We have all been affected by violence, intimidation, and bullying to some degree. Children are especially vulnerable to the lasting pain and trauma of these experiences. When we give them the tools and understanding to become assertive and self-aware, however, bullying can become a blessing in disguise: a powerful opportunity for personal growth. Choosing to respond to bullying mindfully, in spite of their fears, is the beginning of a journey into true freedom. We can coach our children awareness of bullying dynamics, and teach them the social and emotional skills to thrive in a world where bullies have always existed. With our help, our children can develop the confidence, courage, and knowledge to alter their experiences and excel in life. Bully Proof, The Gift of Self-Esteem provides parents, educators, and coaches with concepts and practical strategies to help guide children on the path to letting go of fear and embracing personal growth, inviting the reader on a journey of self-leadership that goes way beyond being competent with bullies; it shows us how to build a foundation for peace and happiness.

Book excerpt: An inspiring coming-of-age story told in prose and “spare, lyrical” verse (The Horn Book Magazine) from award-winning author Margarita Engle about a girl falling in love for the first time while finding the courage to protest for women’s right to vote in 1920s Cuba. Rima loves to ride horses alongside her abuela and Las Mambisas, the fierce women veterans who fought during Cuba’s wars for independence. Feminists from many backgrounds have gathered in voting clubs to demand suffrage and equality for women, but not everybody wants equality for all—especially not for someone like Rima. In 1920s Cuba, illegitimate children like her are bullied and shunned. Rima dreams of a day when she is free from fear and shame, the way she feels when she’s riding with Las Mambisas. As she seeks her way, Rima forges unexpected friendships with others who long for freedom, especially a handsome young artist named Maceo. Through turbulent times, hope soars, and with it…love.

Book excerpt: For over thirty years the benzodiazepines monopolised not only the anxiolytic market but also clinical and animal research in anxiety. Indeed many animal tests developed since the 1960s have been optimised for the benzodiazepines and some programmes have even screened candidates as potential anxiolytics on their benzodiazepine-like side-effects rather than their anxiolytic activity. With the realisation of the drawbacks of the benzodiazepines, namely their potential for tolerance and dependency, there has been a renewed interest in alternative anxiolytics both from existing drugs such as the tricyclic and monoamine oxidase antidepressants and from newer agents such as buspirone. In addition anxiety is no longer considered to be a unique entity but rather an umbrella term for a series of specific anxiety disorders such as panic disorder without or with agoraphobia, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), specific phobias, social phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). These new clinical categories have opened another dimension in the therapy of anxiety requiring the optimisation of treatments for different syndromes. This book is a critical review of today's anxiolytics and those that may become the anxiolytics of tomorrow. What is clear is that currently there are few clinically satisfactory alternatives to the benzodiazepines for the treatment of acute anxiety. For chronic anxiety, it is generally agreed that benzodi azepines are not the treatment of first choice. The tricyclic and monoamine oxidase antidepressants, the serotonin reuptake inhibitors and buspirone offer better solutions for chronic anxiety but they are still far from being ideal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biopolar disorder has served as a principal point of focus for modern psychiatric research since the advent of the psychopharmacological revolution. Yet, the disparity between optimal and typical care for biopolar disorder is perhaps nowhere larger, and its human and economic impact nowhere greater. An important and much-needed resource, Bipolar Disorders: Clinical Course and Outcome relates empirical data on outcome with practical information on the prognosis, course, and potential complications of bipolar disorders in the modern era. Pulling together current knowledge on bipolar disorders from leading investigators in the field, Bipolar Disorders provides a concise, up-to-date summary of affective relapse, comorbid psychopathology, functional disability, and psychosocial outcome in contemporary bipolar disorders. Important issues regarding pharmacoeconomics and the burden of disease are presented in conjunction with a discussion of mania through the life cycle and a summary of clinical and treatment implications. In addition, this timely resource covers the effect of lithium and anticonvulsants on outcome during controlled and naturalistic treatment; manic outcome in relation to specific comorbidities or subtypes of illness for mixed mania, alcoholism or other substance abuse, rapid-cycling bipolar disorders, hypomania, and comorbid anxiety disorders; individual psychotherapy and family psychoeducation; and the role of public sector psychiatry and community-based treatment programs for chronic bipolar illness. As part of the Clinical Practice Series of the American Psychiatric Press, this book integrates current clinical research findings with practical clinical applications, providing a broad overview of course and outcome for bipolar patients treated under typical treatment conditions. Aimed at both clinicians and investigators, this book consciously relates naturalistic follow-up studies in mania to the routine clinical management of bipolar disorders over time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the lack of guidance available for practitioners, extensive polypharmacy has become the primary method of treating patients with severe and chronic mood, anxiety, psychotic or behavioral disorders. This ground-breaking new book provides an overview of psychopharmacology knowledge and decision-making strategies, integrating findings from evidence-based trials with real-world clinical presentations. It adopts the approach and mind-set of a clinical investigator and reveals how prescribers can practice 'bespoke psychopharmacology', tailoring care to the individualized needs of patients. Practitioners at all levels of expertise will enhance their ability to devise rationale-based treatments, targeting manifestations of dysfunctional neural circuitry and dimensions of psychopathology that cut across conventional psychiatric diagnoses. Presented in a user-friendly, practical, full-colour layout and incorporating summary tables, bullet points, and illustrative case vignettes, it is an invaluable guide for all healthcare professionals prescribing psychotropic medications, including psychiatry specialists, primary care physicians, and advanced practice registered nurses.
