Book excerpt: Jefferson's moral and political thought are more complex than they appear at first glance, consisting of two Jeffersons, and evolving from a natural law, universal Enlightenment ethos to a more cultural relativist perspective. RIGHTFUL LIBERTY explores themes and events overlooked by other Jefferson experts, such as his response to the English abolitionist Thomas Branagan; the formative influence of Montesquieu on the young Jefferson's opposition to slavery; a comparison of his attitudes to slavery and abolition with those of Edward Coles; his relationships with Black slaves and freedmen other than those of the well-known Hemings family; and a more nuanced perspective on his view of the Missouri Compromises of 1820 and 1821 than is found elsewhere. As speculations about Jefferson's personal life, often based on little evidence prevail, this volume examines him from a more wide-ranging perspective, discerning his moral, political, and religious thought in relation to his actions.

Book Synopsis The United States Government Is Illegitimate by : Robert G. Beard, Jr., C.P.A., C.G.M.A., J.D., LL.M.
Download or read book The United States Government Is Illegitimate written by Robert G. Beard, Jr., C.P.A., C.G.M.A., J.D., LL.M. and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a draft of chapter one of Mr. Beard's dissertation, The Impact of Constitutional Interpretation on Individual Freedom. He was kicked out of the J.S.D. program by a Dean, who graduated from Harvard Law, because this project was, to put it politely, "politically incorrect;" justification was that it would not contribute anything new or important to the existing scholarship. Once the Dean was no longer at the law school, Mr. Beard's supervisor and co-faculty director of the program invited him back to finish this project. The purpose of this dissertation is to explain how power-elites and branches of government have reinterpreted the U.S. Constitution to increase government power and authority at the expense of individual freedom. There are only two ways to interpret the U.S. Constitution: (1) Under the freedom doctrine; or, (2) as a master-slave relationship, which is what has been going on for the past 100 years. If Americans are not slaves, then the U.S. Government is Illegitimate.
Book Synopsis J.S. Mill's On Liberty in Focus by : John Gray
Download or read book J.S. Mill's On Liberty in Focus written by John Gray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together J.S. Mills On Liberty and a selection of important essays by such eminent scholars as Isaiah Berlin, Alan Ryan, John Rees, C.L. Ten and Richard Wollheim. As well as providing authoritative commentary upon On Liberty, the essays reflect a broader debate about the philosophical foundations of Mill's liberalism, particularly the question of the connection betweenMill's professed utilitarianism and his commitment to individual liberty. Introduced and edited by John Gray and G.W. Smith, the book will be of interest to students of Mill, to ethical and political philosophers and to anyone interested in the contemporary status of liberalism.
Download or read book On Liberty written by John Stuart Mill and published by Harriman House Limited. This book was released on 2010-08-27 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A potent defence of the individual, and a foundational text for political and social Liberalism, 'On Liberty' is a classic of English philosophy. An important and fascinating book, in many respects it provided the spiritual basis of modern Western society - mistrustful of religion, respectful of non-conformity, and prizing personal over social fulfillment.
Download or read book Lincoln written by Allen Jayne and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this compelling study of the moral principles that most influenced the thinking of Abraham Lincoln, historian Allen Jayne argues persuasively that Lincoln regarded the Declaration of Independence, above all other documents, as the most important embodiment of American principles. This "American manifesto," as Jayne calls it, with its eloquent expression of the ideals of individual liberty and government created to protect and preserve that liberty, was the script that Lincoln followed in his struggle to preserve the Union and extend individual liberties to African Americans. Moreover, Jayne demonstrates that Lincoln''s philosophy was rooted, not in a Bible-based evangelical Christian perspective, but in the European Enlightenment and deism, which so profoundly influenced the thinking of Thomas Jefferson and other Founding Fathers. Jayne begins with a chapter devoted to the influence of deism on Jefferson''s formulation of the Declaration of Independence. Next, he discusses Lincoln''s adoption of the deistic perspective and the crucial role that the Declaration played in his thoughts and actions. He also considers Lincoln''s moral sense, based on deism''s tolerance of different belief systems and universal moral idealism. Finally, he describes Lincoln''s role as chief advocate for the Declaration''s principles and how the Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address reflect this underlying philosophy. This insightful look into the thinking of one of our nation''s greatest presidents during a time of crisis is highly relevant in today''s climate of religious extremism and debates over the balance between individual liberty and national security.

Book Synopsis On Liberty – Ed. Alexander by : John Stuart Mill
Download or read book On Liberty – Ed. Alexander written by John Stuart Mill and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 1999-03-08 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mill predicted that “[t]he Liberty is likely to survive longer than anything else that I have written … because the conjunction of [Harriet Taylor’s] mind with mine has rendered it a kind of philosophic text-book of a single truth, which the changes progressively taking place in modern society tend to bring out in ever greater relief.” Indeed, On Liberty is one of the most influential books ever written, and remains a foundational document for the understanding of vital political, philosophical and social issues. In addition to its many useful appendices, this new edition includes a chronology, bibliography, and a substantial introduction which outlines Mill’s life and works, and sets this central work of 1859 in the context of both his own intellectual development and of the play of ideas and political forces in Victorian society.
