Book Synopsis Righteous by Promise by : Karl Deenick
Download or read book Righteous by Promise written by Karl Deenick and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2018-05-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the foundational importance of circumcision in the Old Testament and its prevalence in numerous debates in the New Testament, it is surprising that so little detailed work has been done on establishing a biblical theology of circumcision. This lack is even more surprising given that circumcision forms the background for some of the most hotly contested writings of the apostle Paul. The situation is complicated by the fact that the biblical material on circumcision seems to present often quite different and even apparently contradictory pictures of what circumcision means. Two of the key biblical concepts which are closely linked to circumcision in the debates carried on in Paul's letters and the early church are righteousness and faith. In this NSBT volume, Karl Deenick shows that these two concepts are central to both the New Testament understanding and the developing Old Testament understanding of circumcision. They are held together by the unfolding promise of a blameless "seed of Abraham," Jesus Christ, through whose sacrifice the promised righteousness will finally come—a righteousness which will be enjoyed by those whose hearts are circumcised, who trust in God's promise. Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.

Book Synopsis Righteous Jehu and his Evil Heirs by : David T. Lamb
Download or read book Righteous Jehu and his Evil Heirs written by David T. Lamb and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-11-22 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David T. Lamb examines not only the dynasty of Jehu within the narrative of 2 Kings, but also the broader context of the dynasties of Israel and Judah in the books of Kings and Samuel. Lamb discusses religious aspects of kingship (such as anointing, divine election, and prayer) in both the Old Testament and in the literature of the ancient Near East. He concludes that the Deuteronomistic editor, because of a deep concern that leaders be divinely chosen and obedient to Yahweh, sought to subvert the monarchical status quo by shaping the Jehuite narrative to emphasize that dynastic succession disastrously fails to produce righteous leaders.

Book Synopsis The Political Philosophy of Francis Bacon by : Tom van Malssen
Download or read book The Political Philosophy of Francis Bacon written by Tom van Malssen and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ambitious and radically original reading of philosopher Francis Bacon. Comprehensive in its ambitions and meticulous in its approach, The Political Philosophy of Francis Bacon is a new and unique interpretation of one of early modernitys more important thinkers. Whereas recent works on Bacon tend to confine themselves either to interpreting his historical context or to considering the founder of Baconianism from the perspective of one work in particular or the history of science in general, Tom van Malssen argues, through detailed and provocative interpretations of a number of Baconian writings, that the unity of Bacons thought can only be revealed if these writings are read in historical and philosophical conjunction as well as on the assumption that they are all somehow part of the whole of Bacons political philosophy. In addition to restoring Bacon to the pantheon of great philosophers, van Malssen demonstrates that a proper understanding of Bacons political philosophy contributes significantly to our understanding of the nature of philanthropic science, the modern project, and ultimately ourselves. This book will become an enduring pillar of our understanding of Bacons philosophy. The scholarship and mastery of the historical sources, both philosophic and Biblical, are brilliant. Jerry Weinberger, author of Science, Faith, and Politics: Francis Bacon and the Utopian Roots of the Modern Age: A Commentary on Bacons Advancement of Learning The scholarship of Bacon in this book is masterful. It should transform and deepen the field, the field being the nature and history of the philosophic life. This is arguably the most thoughtful, penetrating, and ultimately revealing book on Bacon ever written. Svetozar Minkov, author of Francis Bacons Inquiry Touching Human Nature: Virtue, Philosophy, and the Relief of Mans Estate

Book Synopsis The Righteousness of Faith According to Luther by : Hans J. Iwand
Download or read book The Righteousness of Faith According to Luther written by Hans J. Iwand and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hans Joachim Iwand's 1941 monograph, The Righteousness of Faith According to Luther, is an important contribution to contemporary appreciation of Luther's theological significance for today. Although Iwand wrote his study three decades after the beginning of the Luther Renaissance, it nevertheless developed some of the central insights of Luther scholarship during that period. Two concepts--in particular, promise and simultaneity--are crucial to an appreciative understanding of Luther's doctrine of justification. The language of promise presents justification to the believer as a reality that has yet to arrive or is hidden under present reality. And the language of simultaneity attests that humans remain throughout their lives one in the same, sinner and saint. This beautiful translation by Randi H. Lundell makes Iwand's down-to-earth presentation of the doctrine at the heart of Luther's theology, at long last, available to English-language readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people, when they come to Christ newly, are often lost and do not know where to exactly start their journey. I believe that if they have available resources and literatures like this, they will help them to navigate and jump-start their journey. Furthermore, those who are already in the faith do sometimes feel lost at some point in their journey, and this is why I believe this book will be a tremendous help to new and growing believers in the Lord to improve their understanding of the life expected of them by God. The book is about righteous living. It details the expectations of God from all believers who want to walk with Him. It also contains information on how to maintain a life of righteousness and things to do in order to remain steadfast, instead of growing weak or weary. The book also gives a brief understanding of God’s view of a righteous man and why God intended this life for all that will walk with Him. This book also includes some practice questions to refresh reader’s memories and ensure adequate comprehension of their reading.
