Book excerpt: Ride The Wind Laughing is an Illustrated autobiographical story describing the mystical events and experiences which contributed in major ways to my building a 51-foot sailboat in the back yard of my mother's home in rural Nova Scotia- an event which began with no money in an effort to test the Laws of Manifestation and prove to myself the efficacy and practical value of my years of spiritual training. Over a period of four and a half years, the boat, named Wind Rider, went from an imagined image, to a pile of lumber, and finally to a very unusual vessel to both live aboard and sail the oceans of the world. I don't, however, recommend the effort as a way to test the Laws Of Manifestation! It was more like a ladder to a fool's paradise when viewed from below, but when viewed from above, the journey itself was the reward. What any gargantuan effort of creativity does for the mind, heart, and body .. It does far more for the soul.

Book excerpt: Ride The Wind Laughing is about building a 51-foot sailboat almost single-handedly in the back yard with virtually no money-at least, it started out that way. It's about the mystical nature of the Laws of Manifestation . about how dreams and distant possibilities come into existence on Planet Earth. Over a period of four and a half years, a series of events unfolded that were far more interesting than the long hours of hard physical labor or the recounting of boring and repetitive tasks essential to any physical construction project. Working with the wonderful people of rural Nova Scotia, its fishing villages and small local businesses proved as interesting as the magical unfolding of events making it impossible to deny that life itself is controlled by some great invisible hand which has a vested interest in seeing Its creations completed and It's dreams fulfilled. At the age of 44, I had come to a second major crossroad in my life. The first occurred when I left behind the world of corporate business at age 35. The next 9 years were years of spiritual and religious training, and the study in detail of as many aspects of esoteric thinking as I intuitively felt led to greater and greater things. I finally came to the point where my questions all ceased. I had sound mental concepts and could talk the talk, but I had not yet walked the walk to the journey's end. Of what value was all this information, knowledge, and perspective I had so diligently obtained if it could not be practically applied? Ride the Wind Laughing is also a story about riding the winds of life with equanimity and contentedness despite the hardships of daily life. It's about perspective . about looking down on life much as would the student pilot on his very first flight. Once the view from above is attained, there's no going back to being land-locked again. Like the wind, this is a story you can feel. May it expand your perspective as it did mine.

Specially commissioned by the National Theatre for the Connections Festival 2011 involving 200 schools and youth theatre groups across the UK and Ireland, each play is accompanied by production notes and exercises. The Pied Piper re-imagined, the aftermath of genocide in Rwanda, witches in seventeenth century Norfolk, a giant baby on the rampage, an extraordinary day in an ordinary school are just some of subjects covered in the thrilling and varied new plays created by talented writers for young actors to perform in National Theatre Connections 2011. The plays in this anthology offer a huge variety of stories and styles to ignite the imagination of young casts and creative teams. Themes are both teenage and universal - ambition, dashed hopes, fear and confidence, loyalty and betrayal. These new plays embrace a huge range for their inspiration: they plunder classics and imagine the future.

Book excerpt: There are always those of us who feel compelled or drawn to reach out beyond the confines of what we can see, feel, hear, taste or smell into the area of the unknown and unprovable which has been-in the past-the rather exclusive domain of religion and Spirituality. I was myself compelled beyond my capacity to resist to reach not only out into the unknown, but to climb whatever ladder needed to be climbed to rise up out of each box I found myself contained within (and limited by) as some sort of doctrine, philosophy, belief system, scripture, or group thought. I ended up on a very long and sometimes lonely journey which took me to a place of comfort where I felt I at least knew something- that something being a lot more than I knew before beginning the journey. Since that journey to understanding turned out to be the primary thrust and focus of attention of my whole life, I kept track of my thoughts and experiences and wrote them down- sometimes as poetry, sometimes as song, sometimes as narrative. This book highlights the narrative portion of that journey and it describes in a mystical sort of way what I found to be of practical (and impractical) value. For most of us, the journey through life is a journey from "nothing" to "something". I finished that journey about age 35 and then started on the journey from something to nothing. As you will see if you read further inside, nothing merely means "no-thing". The understanding of the word and concept is, however, tantamount to understanding "every-thing".

Book excerpt: Ever since I started learning to play the guitar fifty-some years ago, writing my own songs and putting words to rhythm and rhyme has become a sort of hobby that I use to fill my spare time. Whenever I feel that some phrase, concept, or event in my life warrants expression in song or poetic verse, I sit down and work it out in the moment and then store it away in one of my notebooks. Over the years, and as my consciousness moves increasingly into spiritual things, expressing concepts poetically seems the natural medium for spiritual thoughts and feelings and thus my writings turn more to poetry and poetic prose. One day I decided to organize them into coherent order and only then did it occur to me that someone else might be interested in that which had flowed so effortlessly off the end of my pen over the years. There are roughly 40 poems, 19 song lyrics, 7 letters or stories, and six author's commentaries here between these covers. Hopefully, more than a few will be inspiring, entertaining, or provoking of profound thought. If, however there is just one that you read over and over again down through the years, this book will be worthy of its place in your family library.

Book excerpt: An Arrow To The Heart is decidedly not a standard conventional love story la Cupid's arrow! It's more like discovering too late that one's potential soul mate is equally attracted to a cat-a wildcat, to be precise- in the form of an 18 year-old daughter who is twice as precocious and desirable as her mother. It's a challenge for none other than a master of the universe, and that master is Jack Diamond himself-the Master of the Welded Bead and the lead character in the story which goes by that same name. It is actually a continuation of that story, written originally as a follow-on screenplay, but of such a different character as to demand its own title. The story is unique in that it demonstrates that no matter how advanced, developed, or experienced the soul, the vastness of the Event-Former's intelligence is always tossing a new combination of ingredients into life's cake to make the temptations of Satan seem like child's play next to the cake baked to tempt mastery's extended capabilities. What would you have done wearing the shoes of any of the story's principle characters?

In the wake of her father's death, Johanna finds that lineage counts for little amid the den of intrigue that is the Great Khan's court. Johanna's future – if she has one – lies with her grandfather, in Venice, more than a continent away at the very edge of the known world. So, with a small band of companions, she takes to the Silk Road – that storied collection of routes that link the silks of Cathay, the spices of the Indies and the jewels of the Indus to the markets of the West. But the journey will be long and arduous, for the road ahead is beset by burning sands and ice-fanged mountains, thieves and fanatics, treachery and betrayal.

Book excerpt: Insofar as I am able to discover -- and I have purposefully not looked very hard -- no one has yet (by year 2004) come up with an adequate description or definition of the human soul. After attempting to tackle the task for three years, I can easily understand why. Being a forerunner in unexplored and unknown territory carries with it -- at first -- a level of uncertainty which runs a high risk of making a fool of of any intelligent explorer. Ironically, the quest produces only the fool, for the perspective gained from the attempt alone reveals a previously unseen, unfelt, unknown dimension which dwarfs the mind and intelligence of man altogether. Had I not long since come to know myself as a fool -- albeit a wise one -- I would never have attempted the Herculean task of making the hidden soul more visible. The frame of reference for the soul established in this book is taken from thinking and experience far broader, deeper, and higher than my own -- much of it having existed in "secret" teachings thousands of years old. They were secret because mankind was not yet ready for them -- or else someone or something at some higher level than the human level didn't want the information revealed. My compulsion, however, is to make at least my own understanding public along with my own intuitive realizations and conclusions for those who are capable of seeing beyond the material as well as within it. The book is not easy reading. It was never intended to be. It took me some 30 years to begin to undeerstand what is written herein. Even so, what is written still leaves me with a "void of ignorance" which I can only hope time will dispel. This is really my personal "notebook" .... a piece of open architecture for further thought. It is actually my understanding at age 70. Hopefully, my perspective and understanding will continue onward and upward from here. Kit Cain

But he also saw church leaders who did not listen, laugh together, or love enough of God's world and people. This reality is bad for the gospel--yet there's hope. It is coming in the form of leaders who are taking the time to listen carefully, staying humble and humorous about themselves, and working harder than ever to embody a bit more of God's love, justice, and peace. Listen More, Laugh Often, Love Always offers advice to future church leaders from the ramblings and reflections of one who saw firsthand the embattlements, wanderings, and unravelings of an institution trying to transform itself for a new time in God's grace.

Book excerpt: Here is a short story about a master of the universe (his own universe) who matches the greater freedoms of being a tradesman against the responsibilities and questionable rewards of a business owner or executive. Although he could be equally successful at either end of the spectrum, he chooses the path less traveled and becomes the champion of the less privileged and lesser developed souls in his world. An ex-US Marine pilot, ex-professional gambler, ex-family man, and professional master welder (among other things) Jack Diamond finds himself at opposite poles with his old Marine buddy, Don Hendrix, who owns the ship-building company where he works. Jack is never quite sure whether he's really in charge of all his circumstances or not. Only time and some dimension beyond his comprehension add substance to his experience, wisdom, intelligence and personal power-which never seem equal to the challenges placed before him. If you ever wondered how a well-educated, highly-intelligent soul would choose to move backward down the ladder of so-called success in an entertaining, challenging, and fun-filled manner, Jack Diamond will show you the way.
