Book excerpt: The book presents discussions on: Biology and ecology of major troublesome weeds infesting rice, wheat, corn, soybean, focusing on different cropping patterns in both tropical and temperate cropping systems and science-based weed management practices involving chemical, non-chemical, biological, integrated methods. Herbicides used, with their most recent classification, identification of new target sites, mechanisms and modes of action and how and why weeds evolve resistance to herbicides. New concepts, new paradigms and new technologies to manage evolution of resistance to herbicides including weed genomics, bioherbicides and allelochemicals. Highly recommended for students, teachers, researchers, agronomists, horticulturists, crop physiologists, and crop protection specialists in tropical and temperate agricultural systems, particularly in areas where major tropical weeds are posing potential threats to temperate agricultural systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flood and water logging land situations are the natural features of Eastern India. These situations start from the foot hills of the Himalayas in Nepal and extended up to Bangla Desh covering the entire stretch of eastern India. The flood-prone basins of eastern India have their own traditional farming systems. Traditional technologies give low but stable yield. Improved technologies generated at experimental stations have not been able to outperform farmers traditional technologies. Efficacy of alternate technology development and dissemination process was explored through the Ford Foundation supported Farming Systems Research (FSR) programme in eastern India. The book deals with the approaches and experiences gained during implementing the FSR programme in a Gandak basin of Vaishali district in Bihar. The book highlights the role of people for developing local resource based technologies. While developing such technologies environment, ecology and social aspects were taken into account. This experience of the authors is being documented so that development workers working under similar situations can develop participatory technologies apart from directly using already developed appropriate technologies mentioned in this book. Contents Chapter 1: Introduction; Chapter 2: The Project Area; Chapter 3: Socio-Economic Profile; Chapter 4: Participatory Technology Development Process; Chapter 5: Outstanding Issues; Chapter 6: Impact Assessment; Chapter 7: Future Prospects.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the coming decades the world will need to more than double its food and feed production, almost all of the increase being needed in developing countries. This has socioeconomic and biophysical implications. Traditional component and commodity research addresses overly narrow issues at too small a scale. Rural development needs an eco-regional approach that integrates biophysical and socioeconomic work on cropping systems, livestock, the environment, and natural resources. This book contains the papers, response papers and discussion report of a five-day seminar on eco-regional approaches. It assesses the state of the art of systems approaches applied to eco-regional problems, presenting and discussing a number of case studies. Future research needs are discussed, as well as ways to improve collaboration between research institutes. The seminar on which the book is based was organised on behalf of the Directorate General for International Cooperation of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Research Institute for Agrobiology and Soil Fertility (AB-DLO), the Wageningen Agricultural University (WAU), and the International Potato Centre (CIP). It was held at the International Service for National Agricultural Research (ISNAR), and was attended by participants from all CGIAR centres, among others.
