Book excerpt: The Stingray is the first book of investigative journalism to take a critical look at Survivor, the most successful summer T.V. series in history. Five-time Emmy-winning investigative reporter Peter Lance reveals startling evidence on how Richard Hatch (the sole Survivor) achieved his victory, as well as information about how the CBS network controlled the 16 Castaways and limited their income after the series Finale. Lance also levels charges of possible manipulation by the series producers in the production of this potentially FCC regulated game show. Finally, there's a page turning account of Richard Hatch's tumultuous life. This is a must read for the millions of Survivor fans and an intriguing introduction to the series for those that missed it.

Book excerpt: Set in contemporary Israel, The Immortal Bartfuss is perhaps the most profound and powerful portrait of a Holocaust survivor ever drawn. Using the techniques of omission and indirection perfected in such masterpieces as Badenheim 1939 and To the Land of the Cattails, Appelfeld tells the story of Bartfuss, enigmatically the immortal because of his experience in the camps. Now locked in a hopeless marriage, Bartfuss struggles to suppress the emotions and recollections he fears and despises, while trying to keep alive the poise, dignity, and compassion essential to a human being. The Immortal Bartfuss is an overwhelming and unforgettable study of a man reduced to his tragic limits.

Book excerpt: Private Investigator Hugh M. Doherty returns for the second installment in the Doherty Mystery series. It is 1959 and a member of West Warwick, Rhode Island's small Jewish community, Meir Poznanski, has gone missing. He is a concentration camp survivor who immigrated to Rhode Island from Poland after the war. A group of men from the local synagogue wish to hire PI Doherty to find their friend. Poznanski has disappeared because he believes he has seen a man in Providence who was a member of a Nazi affiliated group in Poland that turned his family in to the Gestapo. He is now intent upon killing this man in an act of revenge for the injustices visited upon him and his family. In order to commit this act Poznanski elicits the support of a mysterious woman who is likewise a Holocaust survivor. Doherty's mission is to prevent this grievous deed from occurring. The case causes Doherty to suffer from a crisis of conscience once he encounters the person Poznanski seeks to kill. The man is a despicable human being as well as an ex-Nazi. Doherty must wrestle with the dilemma of whether or not he should save this man's life while taking on the responsibility of preventing Poznanski from committing the crime. A war veteran himself who fought bravely against the Germans, Doherty is confronted with his own feelings about the war and its aftermath. Along the way he learns more about the Holocaust and the long lasting effects it has on those who survived it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hidden History of Rhode Island delivers the best Ocean State stories you've never heard before. Surprising tales and unexpected anecdotes color Rhode Island's legacy, from the accounts of its three brave Titanic survivors to the whirlwind Revolutionary War romance between a Smithfield girl and a French viscount. Rhode Island historian Glenn Laxton uncovers the exceptional citizens whom history has forgotten, like Robert the Hermit, a man who endured three escapes from slavery before finding liberty and peace in Rumford; the illustrious Lippitt family, who spearheaded advancements in deaf education; and Christiana Bannister, a Narragansett tribe member, nineteenth-century entrepreneur and wife to the most successful African American artist of the time. With moments of tragedy, as in the Lexington steamboat disaster, as well as triumph, as in the case of small-town boy turned baseball hero Joe Connolly, Laxton reveals Rhode Island beneath the surface.
