Book Synopsis Folding and Fracturing of Rocks by : C.E. Bond
Download or read book Folding and Fracturing of Rocks written by C.E. Bond and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Publication is a celebration of research into the Folding and Fracturing of Rocks to mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of the seminal textbook by J. G. Ramsay. Folding and Fracturing of Rocks summarised the key structural geology concepts of the time. Through his numerical and geometric focus John pioneered and provided solutions to understanding the processes leading to the folding and fracturing of rocks. His strong belief that numerical and geometric solutions, to understanding crustal processes, should be tested against field examples added weight and clarity to his work. The basic ideas and solutions presented in the text are as relevant now as they were 50 years ago, and this collection of papers celebrates John’s contribution to structural geology. The papers explore the lasting impact of John and his work, they present case studies and a modern understanding of the process documented in the Folding and Fracturing of Rocks.

Book excerpt: This book introduces research advances in Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) that have taken place under the aegis of the AFOSR/AFRL sponsored Center of Excellence on Integrated Materials Modeling (CEIMM) at Johns Hopkins University. Its author team consists of leading researchers in ICME from prominent academic institutions and the Air Force Research Laboratory. The book examines state-of-the-art advances in physics-based, multi-scale, computational-experimental methods and models for structural materials like polymer-matrix composites and metallic alloys. The book emphasizes Ni-based superalloys and epoxy matrix carbon-fiber composites and encompasses atomistic scales, meso-scales of coarse-grained models and discrete dislocations, and micro-scales of poly-phase and polycrystalline microstructures. Other critical phenomena investigated include the relationship between microstructural morphology, crystallography, and mechanisms to the material response at different scales; methods of identifying representative volume elements using microstructure and material characterization, and robust deterministic and probabilistic modeling of deformation and damage. Encompassing a slate of topics that enable readers to comprehend and approach ICME-related issues involved in predicting material performance and failure, the book is ideal for mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineers, and materials scientists, in in academic, government, and industrial laboratories.
Book Synopsis Rock Deformation from Field, Experiments and Theory by : D.R. Faulkner
Download or read book Rock Deformation from Field, Experiments and Theory written by D.R. Faulkner and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernie Rutter has made, and continues to make, a significant impact in the field of rock deformation. He has studied brittle and plastic deformation processes that occur within both the oceanic and continental crust, as well as other key properties such as the permeability and seismic velocities of these rocks. His approach has been one that integrates field observations, laboratory experiments and theoretical analyses. This volume celebrates Ernie's key contribution to rock deformation and structural geology by bringing together a collection of papers that represent this broad approach. The papers within the volume address key issues that remain within these fields. These range from fundamental studies of brittle and plastic behaviour along with the resultant structures and microstructures from both the field and laboratory, to applied problems where a better understanding of the deformation and properties of the crust is still needed.
Book Synopsis Continuum Micromechanics by : Dazhi Jiang

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book integrates theory, numerical methods, and practical applications seamlessly. MATLAB and MathCad programs are provided for readers to master the theory, understand the approach, and to further develop and apply the methods to geological problems. Multiscale and multi-physics investigations of Earth and planetary processes have been an active trend of research in Earth Sciences, thanks to the development of scientific computation and computer software and hardware. Based on the author's research and teaching over the past 15 years, the book stands alone as the first comprehensive text in unifying fundamental continuum micromechanics theory, geometric/kinematic analysis, and applications. The book should appeal to a broad audience of students and researchers, particularly those in the fields of structural geology, tectonics, (natural and experimental) rock deformation, mineral physics and rheology, and numerical modeling of multiscale and coupling processes.
Book Synopsis Deformation Mechanisms, Rheology and Tectonics by : Siese de Meer
Download or read book Deformation Mechanisms, Rheology and Tectonics written by Siese de Meer and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2002 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motion and deformation of rocks are processes of fundamental importance in shaping the Earth, from outer crustal layers to the deep mantle. Reconstructions of the evolution of the Earth therefore require detailed knowledge of the geometry of deformation structures and their relative timing, of the motions leading to deformation structures and of the mechanisms governing these motions. This volume contains a collection of 22 papers on field, experimental and theoretical studies that add to our knowledge of these processes.
Book Synopsis Arc-Continent Collision by : Dennis Brown
Download or read book Arc-Continent Collision written by Dennis Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-29 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arc-continent collision has been one of the important tectonic processes in the formation of mountain belts throughout geological time, and it continues to be so today along tectonically active plate boundaries such as those in the SW Pacific or the Caribbean. Arc-continent collision is thought to have been one of the most important process involved in the growth of the continental crust over geological time, and may also play an important role in its recycling back into the mantle via subduction. Understanding the geological processes that take place during arc-continent collision is therefore of importance for our understanding of how collisional orogens evolve and how the continental crust grows or is destroyed. Furthermore, zones of arc-continent collision are producers of much of the worlds primary economic wealth in the form of minerals, so understanding the processes that take place during these tectonic events is of importance in modeling how this mineral wealth is formed and preserved. This book brings together seventeen papers that are dedicated to the investigation of the tectonic processes that take place during arc-continent collision. It is divided into four sections that deal firstly with the main players involved in any arc-continent collision; the continental margin, the subduction zone, and finally the volcanic arc and its mineral deposits. The second section presents eight examples of arc-continent collisions that range from being currently active through to Palaeoproterozoic in age. The third section contains two papers, one that deals with the obduction of large-slab ophiolites and a second that presents a wide range of physical models of arc-continent collision. The fourth section brings everything that comes before together into a discussion of the processes of arc-continent collision.

Book Synopsis Deformation Mechanisms, Rheology and Tectonics by : David J. Prior
Download or read book Deformation Mechanisms, Rheology and Tectonics written by David J. Prior and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2011 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers presents recent advances in the study of deformation mechanisms and rheology and their applications to tectonics. Many of the contributions exploit new petrofabric techniques, particularly electron backscatter diffraction, to help understand the evolution of rock microstructure and mechanical properties. Papers in the first section (lattice preferred orientations and anisotropy ) show a growing emphasis on the determination of elastic properties from petrofabrics, from which acoustic properties can be computed for comparison with in-situ seismic measurements. Such research will underpin geodynamic interpretation of large-scale active tectonics. Contributions in the second section (microstructures, mechanisms and rheology) study the relations between microstructural evolution during deformation and mechanical properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of research and review papers addresses the question of structural evolution during deformation to high strains and the physical properties of rocks that have been affected by high-strain zones. The discussions range from natural examples at outcrop to microscopic studies.
