Book excerpt: The method predicts that a positive pressure gradient increases and a negative pressure gradient decreases the ratio of Stanton number to friction coefficient. The Crocco relation between the velocity and total enthalpy for a non-adiabatic surface and zero pressure gradient is generalized to non-zero pressure gradient. The relation between the velocity and the total enthalpy varies markedly from the flat plate Crocco relation as the pressure gradient departs from zero. The magnitude of the variation depends on the velocity profile shape parameter. (Author).

Book excerpt: The pressure gradient effect on the characteristics of a compressible turbulent boundary layer in separation and reattachment regions of laminar and turbulent flows have been investigated. Experiments were conducted at a large variation of Mach numbers and free stream Reynolds numbers. Favorable pressure gradient was found to have significant effect on the correlation of the total temperature and velocity profiles in turbulent boundary layer. Correlations for the separation distance, peak heating values, and peak surface pressure were found. Methods are described to predict the location and peak heating values in a separated flow region.

Book excerpt: A good understanding of turbulent compressible flows is essential to the design and operation of high-speed vehicles. Such flows occur, for example, in the external flow over the surfaces of supersonic aircraft, and in the internal flow through the engines. Our ability to predict the aerodynamic lift, drag, propulsion and maneuverability of high-speed vehicles is crucially dependent on our knowledge of turbulent shear layers, and our understanding of their behavior in the presence of shock waves and regions of changing pressure. Turbulent Shear Layers in Supersonic Flow provides a comprehensive introduction to the field, and helps provide a basis for future work in this area. Wherever possible we use the available experimental work, and the results from numerical simulations to illustrate and develop a physical understanding of turbulent compressible flows.

Book excerpt: The report describes an experimental study of compressible turbulent boundary layers for which the upstream history was systematically varied. A series of experiments was conducted using both a supersonic half nozzle and a conventional flat plate for which the nozzle throat and flat plate leading edge can be temperature controlled. The supersonic nozzle provided a favorable upstream pressure gradient together with a controlled thermal history at the throat. The flat plate provided upstream temperature control with no pressure history. Velocity and temperature profile and heat-transfer measurements were made in a downstream region of zero-pressure-gradient and constant wall temperature. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: An experimental program was conducted to investigate effects of roughness, and roughness superimposed on single and/or multiple, shallow, periodic waveforms, on turbulent boundary-layer skin friction and velocity profile, in compressible, adiabatic flow. Test conditions were Mach number = 2.9 and Reynolds number/ft = 2 million to 8 million. The planar models included smooth, sand-grain, machined and molded surface finishes. Direct measurements of surface shear and Pitot/recovery temperature profiles were obtained. (Modified author abstract).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of Turbulent Boundary Layers focuses on turbulent flows meeting the requirements for the boundary-layer or thin-shear-layer approximations. Its approach is devising relatively fundamental, and often subtle, empirical engineering correlations, which are then introduced into various forms of describing equations for final solution. After introducing the topic on turbulence, the book examines the conservation equations for compressible turbulent flows, boundary-layer equations, and general behavior of turbulent boundary layers. The latter chapters describe the CS method for calculating two-dimensional and axisymmetric laminar and turbulent boundary layers. This book will be useful to readers who have advanced knowledge in fluid mechanics, especially to engineers who study the important problems of design.

Book excerpt: An analysis of the incompressible turbulent boundary layer, developing under the combined effects of mass transfer and pressure gradient, is presented in this paper. A strip-integral method is employed whereby two of the three governing equations are obtained by integrating the combined momentum and continuity equation to 50 percent and 100 percent, respectively, of the boundary-layer height. The latter equation is the usual momentum-integral equation; the former equation requires specification of shear. Accordingly, Clauser's equilibrium eddy-viscosity law is assumed valid at this point. The third and final equation is obtained by specifying that Stevenson's velocity profiles apply throughout the domain of interest, from which a skin-friction law can be derived. Comparisons of the numerical results with the experiments of McQuaid, which include combined effects of variable pressure gradient and mass transfer, show good agreement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the Eighth Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows held at the Technical University of Munich, 9-11 September 1991. The first of these biennial international symposia was held at the Pennsylvania State Uni versity, USA, in 1977; subsequent symposia have been held at Imperial College, London, England; the University of California, Davis, USA; the University of Karlsruhe, Ger many; Cornell University, Ithaca, USA; the Paul Sabatier University, Toulouse, France; and Stanford University, California, USA. The purpose of this series of symposia is to provide a forum for the presentation and discussion of new developments in the field of turbulence, especially as related to shear flows of importance in engineering and geo physics. From the 330 extended abstracts submitted for this symposium, 145 papers were presented orally and 60 as posters. Out of these, we have selected twenty-four papers for inclusion in this volume, each of which has been revised and extended in accordance with the editors' recommendations. The following four theme areas were selected after consideration of the quality of the contributions, the importance of the area, and the selection made in earlier volumes: - wall flows, - separated flows, - compressibility effects, - buoyancy, rotation, and curvature effects. As in the past, each section corresponding to the above areas begins with an introduction by an authority in the field that places the individual contributions in context with one another and with related research.

Book excerpt: An experimental study was made of the effect of a favorable pressure gradient on the Reynolds analogy factor, K = 2St/C sub f, for a natural two-dimensional supersonic turbulent boundary layer in air. Integrated values of the skin friction coefficient and Stanton number were determined from experimental data. The results show that Colburn's value of K = Pr to the - 2/3 power, which was found empirically from zero pressure gradient data, is satisfactory for relating skin friction and heat transfer for the magnitudes of pressure gradients investigated.
