Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revolutionary Fights and Fighters This book is designed to call to the attention of those interested in our early struggles, some of the most re markable of the great battles, heroic achievements and desperate undertakings through which we became a nation. No attempt has been made to cover all the events in the wars referred to. The author has chosen such as would serve to present a variety of incident, to illustrate the period and to exhibit the leaders and men. In the compiling of this book he has freely used every available source of information to which he had access, including the numerous printed volumes on the subject, and much material in manuscript form. Although the sketches a1e intended for populai 1eacli11g, it is believed that they ale accurate and reliable. Other volumes of the same character, covering the history of the wars and adventures in which we have been interested, from the voyages of Columbus to the capture of Manila, are in contemplation and preparation. That the stories may serve to stimulate patriotism and love of country, and to encou1age men to consemate themselves, with the devotion of theii forefathers, to the civic battles for freedom and honor which are still to be waged, is the hope of the author. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A well-organized and concise introduction to the war’s major battles” (The Journal of America’s Military Past). Winner of the Gold Star Book Award for History from the Military Writers Society of America This is the first comprehensive account of every engagement of the Revolution, a war that began with a brief skirmish at Lexington Green on April 19, 1775, and concluded on the battlefield at the Siege of Yorktown in October 1781. In between were six long years of bitter fighting on land and at sea. The wide variety of combats blanketed the North American continent from Canada to the Southern colonies, from the winding coastal lowlands to the Appalachian Mountains, and from the North Atlantic to the Caribbean. Every entry begins with introductory details including the date of the battle, its location, commanders, opposing forces, terrain, weather, and time of day. The detailed body of each entry offers both a Colonial and a British perspective of the unfolding military situation, a detailed and unbiased account of what actually transpired, a discussion of numbers and losses, an assessment of the consequences of the battle, and suggestions for further reading. Many of the entries are supported and enriched by original maps and photos.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mud and Guts: A Look at the Common Soldier of the American Revolution The average American in those days was about what he is today: a small property owner who admired independence and occasion ally was even known to practice it. Then, as today, he resented being governed and taxed by a bunch of remote and powerful bureaucrats. He grumbled a lot over little tyrannies such as stamp acts and tea taxes - but a revolution? The very word causes a shud der to run up the bourgeois spine, and if there ever were, and are, two bourgeois societies, they're England and America. Most people would rather be moderately comfortable and safe than stand up and fight for an illusive term like independence. It has been said that if there had been a back door in the Alamo there would be no Texas. Likewise, if the royal administrators who ran the colonies had had an ounce of sense and perception, our hard-nosed radicals, such as Tom Paine, would never have pre vailed and there would have been no revolution, or rebellion, or whatever it was. The British were really nuts to have let all this happen. But that's the way things go when bureaucrats feel safe. They become blind and arrogant. Those were confusing times, however. It's easy today to say. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soldiers and Patriots of the American Revolution York, near where the hospital now stands. With his cane, his wooden leg, and his stout lungs, he created quite a furor among the little folks who were playing in the neighborhood, and many of them followed him to his door. Hurrah continued the old man, the war is over; peace is declared, and the last red-coat is drummed out of the country. I tell you it did my old eyes good to see the Britishers leave the wharf this morning and the lips of the veteran trem bled and the tears coursed down his wrinkled cheeks. I guess Uncle Tim loves to see sogers about as well as we do said a roguish-looking urchin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War of Independence This little book does not contain the substance of the lectures on the American Revolution which I have delivered in so many parts of the United States since 1883. Those lectures, when completed and published, will make quite a detailed narrative; this book is but a sketch. It is hoped that it may prove useful to the higher classes in schools, as well as to teachers. When I was a boy I should have been glad to get hold of a brief account of the War for Independence that would have suggested answers to some of the questions that used to vex me. Was the conduct of the British government, in driving the Americans into the rebellion, merely wanton aggression, or was it not rather a bungling attempt to solve a political problem which really needed to be solved? Why were New Jersey and the Hudson river so important? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A few colonies scattered up and down the Atlantic coast of America were actually thinking of going to war against the ter rible power of England, the mother country. They were not only ready to do so they were impatiently waiting for King George to start the trouble. You know how you used to feel when some bigger boy bullied you; stole your marbles; ran off with your hat; broke up your game of ball. You wanted to do something to him that would hurt. You made plans all day long for getting even with him, and lay awake at night thinking about it. That is the way the Americans felt toward their king. They were ready to fight to the death for what they believed to be their rights. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Our Revolution If I should ask you, Boy, to tell me what were the causes of the American Revolution, you would promptly answer The Stamp Act, Taxation Without Representation, and The Quartering of English Troops upon the Colonists. Your answer would be correct. These were the immediate causes. As a matter of fact, however, there were other, deeper and more important causes, and these were as old as the colonies themselves. Religious freedom, the very thing that drove many of the English and French colonists to the new land, was in danger as soon as England began to tighten her hold on the colonies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Second Revolution in China, 1913: My Adventures of the Fighting Around Shanghai, the Arsenal, Woosung Forts My descriptions may perhaps contain facts which will not probably appeal to all of my readers who may not have been soldiers, as being connected with the work of a newspaper man, but when one has worn the coat of H. M. the Emperor Francis Joseph I. of Austria's army as I have, it will be easily understood I took no account of the risks, and went as far as I could when collecting the news during the fighting. Desiring to serve the public with as authentic and as real a report about the last episode in China's history, I have tried my best to fulfil my duty as a newspaper man, and now submit my labours to an indulgent public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anecdotes of the Revolutionary War in America: With Sketches of Character of Persons the Most Distinguished, in the Southern States, for Civil and Military Services The author cannot sufficiently lament that he had but little share in the achievement of those important events which fixed the independency of the United States. His heart from the earliest dawn of the Revolution was devoted to the cause of his country, and he would have been first in the ranks of her armies but the Revolution found him a youth in Europe, in pursuit of his Colle giate studies, and a parent's mandate forbid it. When age permitted his return to America, his fortunes without a murmur were sacrificed to his principles, and his life. To have promoted the interests of America, would have been yielded without a sigh. The public witnessed his zeal and liberally rewarded it. His general gave him his confidence and promotion. His fellow soldiers, What he must ever consider his highest honour, their friendship and esteem. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
