Book excerpt: Aptly described by playwright Eugene Ionesco as one of the four or five great reformers of modern thought, Andre Breton (1896-1966) was the founder and prime mover of Surrealism, the most influential artistic and literary movement of the 20th century. Poet and theorist, artistic impresario and political agitator, Breton was a man of paradoxical character: inspiring one moment, crushingly tyrannical the next; embracing friends like Brunuel, Dali, Duchamp, Miro, Man Ray, Aragon and Eluard, only to exile them as enemies later. From its emergence from Dada after World War I through its culmination in the 1960s, here is the Surrealist world in detail. --Black Widow Press.

Book excerpt: Arguably the most decisive shift in the history of ideas in modern times was the complete demolition during the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries - in the wake of the Scientific Revolution - of traditional structures of authority, scientific thought, and belief by the new philosophyand the philosophes, culminating in Voltaire, Diderot, and Rousseau. In this revolutionary process which effectively overthrew all justicfication for monarchy, aristocracy, and ecclesiastical power, as well as man's dominance over woman, theological dominance of education, and slavery, substitutingthe modern principles of equality, democracy, and universality, the Radical Enlightenment played a crucially important part. Despite the present day interest in the revolutions of the late eighteenth century, the origins and rise of the Radical Enlightenment have been astonishingly little studieddoubtless largely because of its very wide international sweep and the obvious difficulty of fitting in into the restrictive conventions of 'national history' which until recently tended to dominate all historiography. The greatest obstacle to the Radical Enlightenment finding its proper place inmodern historical writing is simply that it was not French, British, German, Italian, Jewish or Dutch, but all of these at the same time. In this novel interpretation of the Radical Enlightenment down to La Mettie and Diderot, two of its key exponents, particular stress is placed on the pivotal roleof Spinoza and the widespread underground international philosophical movement known before 1750 as Spinozism.

Book excerpt: America's Revolutionary Mind is the first major reinterpretation of the American Revolution since the publication of Bernard Bailyn's The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution and Gordon S. Wood's The Creation of the American Republic. The purpose of this book is twofold: first, to elucidate the logic, principles, and significance of the Declaration of Independence as the embodiment of the American mind; and, second, to shed light on what John Adams once called the "real American Revolution"; that is, the moral revolution that occurred in the minds of the people in the fifteen years before 1776. The Declaration is used here as an ideological road map by which to chart the intellectual and moral terrain traveled by American Revolutionaries as they searched for new moral principles to deal with the changed political circumstances of the 1760s and early 1770s. This volume identifies and analyzes the modes of reasoning, the patterns of thought, and the new moral and political principles that served American Revolutionaries first in their intellectual battle with Great Britain before 1776 and then in their attempt to create new Revolutionary societies after 1776. The book reconstructs what amounts to a near-unified system of thought—what Thomas Jefferson called an “American mind” or what I call “America’s Revolutionary mind.” This American mind was, I argue, united in its fealty to a common philosophy that was expressed in the Declaration and launched with the words, “We hold these truths to be self-evident.”

Book excerpt: From the chilly gray of her hometown on Chicago's North Shore to a palm-speckled, sun-drenched California campus, young Ellen "Boo" Harvey is caught in a depressive descent into mania and melancholy that no one around her has the language, energy, or courage to look squarely in the face. Unheard or dismissed by her family and friends, Boo is forced to grapple with the ferocity of her Madness and the intricacies of her mind alone -- careening from mental paralysis and near-invalidity to recovery and back again. Despite every privilege afforded to her as the well-heeled daughter of a blue blood family, Boo's trajectory seems terminally inescapable until she meets Jude, a suicidal advocate for the mentally ill in Chicago, who teaches her how to rail against the machines and structures that work around the clock to render an entire class of Americans politically invisible and permanently broken. An assiduous and provocative debut, MV Perry's A Revolution of the Mind is equal parts political manifesto, tortured self-portrait, and call to action that gazes unflinchingly at the causes and manifestations of contemporary American Madness.

Book excerpt: In the 1790s, Britain underwent what the politician Edmund Burke called 'the most important of all revolutions...a revolution in sentiments'. Inspired by the French Revolution, British radicals concocted new political worlds to enshrine healthier, more productive, human emotions and relationships. The Enlightenment's wildest hopes crested in the utopian projects of such optimists - including the young poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, the philosophers William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, the physician Thomas Beddoes and the first photographer Thomas Wedgwood - who sought to reform sex, education, commerce, politics and medicine by freeing desire from repressive constraints. But by the middle of the decade, the wind had changed. The French Revolution descended into bloody Terror and the British government quashed radical political activities. In the space of one decade, feverish optimism gave way to bleak disappointment, and changed the way we think about human need and longing. A Revolution of Feeling is a vivid and absorbing account of the dramatic end of the Enlightenment, the beginning of an emotional landscape preoccupied by guilt, sin, failure, resignation and repression, and the origins of our contemporary approach to feeling and desire. Above all, it is the story of the human cost of political change, of men and women consigned to the 'wrong side of history'. But although their revolutionary proposals collapsed, that failure resulted in its own cultural revolution - a revolution of feeling - the aftershocks of which are felt to the present day.

Book excerpt: This Book Outlines.........●The creative power of your thoughts and words.●The power of the mind and how it works.●The programming of the mind and its adverse effects.●How to get your mind out of prison and put it on a purposeful path.●How to be a slave to a winning mentality thereby creating the destiny you want. etc. The biggest and the most dangerous form of prison is not those in physical prison but a mind that is in prison. Some people are in a physical prison, but their minds are not in prison and some have freedom, but their minds are in prison. That is why a prisoner can be released from prison and become successful but the one who has never been to prison will still be struggling. The power of the mind has been underestimated for far too long. Many don't work on their mind. The mind is like a muscle, the more you work on it, the tougher it becomes to handle difficult and challenging situations that can cause you to quit in pursuit of life and your vision. The reason many succumb to challenges in life is that they haven't trained their mind to handle the battles they encounter. Success and failure start in the mind. You are already defeated or successful in your mind before you take a step. This is the reason why some people can have all the resources needed in pursuit of their vision but still fail because their mind is not set to succeed. That is, they doubt their abilities and that becomes established in real life that impacts their success. Others also can have scarce resources but because of their winning mentality, they can use it to build their vision to a successful venture. This means that lack of success is not a means to success likewise an abundance of resources. Therefore, your mindset is very critical to your success in life irrespective of the resources at your disposal. This book teaches you how to work on your mind and to use your mind to build a strong foundation for a successful venture. I want to reiterate the fact that everyone one of us are programmed in one way or the other. The worse form of programming is the programming of the mind. That is when the mind is designed to work on autopilot where a person acts consciously or unconsciously especially on a negative thought. A typical example is a negative affirmation of a phrase like 'it's not easy' consciously or unconsciously. When your thoughts become your words, it transitions to the level when your actions lead to a habitual lifestyle that can eventually lead to your character, which will define your destiny. This is why this book is designed to work on your mind to move you from the prison of the mind to a purposeful life where you positively impact your life, community and the world at large. Your destiny is in your own hands depending on what mindset you develop. Develop a mindset that drives a winning mentality and success in the pursuit of your life and vision will be a lifestyle.Remember, it's possible if only you believe.

Book excerpt: Using archival materials never previously accessible to Western scholars, Michael David-Fox analyzes Bolshevik Party educational and research initiatives in higher learning after 1917. His fresh consideration of the era of the New Economic Policy and cultural politics after the Revolution explains how new communist institutions rose to parallel and rival conventional higher learning from the Academy of Sciences to the universities. Beginning with the creation of the first party school by intellectuals on the island of Capri in 1909, David-Fox argues, the Bolshevik cultural project was tightly linked to party educational institutions. He provides the first account of the early history and politics of three major institutions founded after the Revolution: Sverdlov Communist University, where the quest to transform everyday life gripped the student movement; the Institute of Red Professors, where the Bolsheviks sought to train a new communist intellectual or red specialist; and the Communist Academy, headquarters for a planned, collectivist, proletarian science.
