This book was released on 2001 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last ten to fifteen years, profound structural reforms have moved Latin America and the Caribbean from closed, state-dominated economies to ones that are more market-oriented and open. Policymakers expected that these changes would speed up growth. This book is part of a multi-year project to determine whether these expectation have been fulfilled. Focusing on technological change, the impact of the reforms on the process of innovation is examined. It notes that the development process is proving to be highly heterogenous across industries, regions and firms and can be described as strongly inequitable. This differentiation that has emerged has implications for job creation, trade balance, and the role of small and medium sized firms. This ultimately suggests, amongst other things, the need for policies to better spread the use of new technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cole Blasier draws together eight essays from economists, political scientists, anthropologists, and other social scientists to discuss the growth of Latin American economics during the late twentieth-century. Anthropologist John P. Gillin looks at the impact of industrialization on a Guatemalan village, and sociologists Fernando Cardoso and Jose Luis Reyna present a pioneering analysis of the effect of industrialization on occupational structure and social stratification. Dwight Brothers takes a critical look at the role of private investment, and fellow economist John Powelson proposes that an integrated social science model of economic growth could resolve some of the conflict between North American economic principles and Latin American political interests. Richard S. Thorn, formerly with the IMF, analyzes the achievements and short-comings of the Alliance for Progress. Literary critic German Arciniegas probes the traditional interaction between Latin American intellectuals and politics, and political scientist James Malloy describes the revolutionary movement in Bolivia and its inability to reconcile the competing demands of political control and economic development.

Book excerpt: In recent years Latin Americanists have been among the most innovative and productive theorists of the uneven process of development. This collection of substantial selections from some of the most prominent theorists in the field represents a scholarly consolidation and reassessment of the controversies concerning the development of Latin America. Beginning with a historiographic overview, the editors emphasize the origins, evolution, and historical context of the development of each theoretical school (modernization, dependency and Marxism, corporatism, and bureaucratic authoritarianism) and then present key selections drawn from the writings of major theorists, organized by school. Each selection is prefaced with a short editorial introduction that highlights the central themes. A concluding section outlines the main debates surrounding each school and suggests new directions in theoretical development that might arise from criticism of the theories of authoritarianism and the search for democratic processes of development. The book’s usefulness as a text is further enhanced by selected bibliographies that contain additional readings on each development theory. Here is a single source for Latin Americanists who hope to interest and instruct their students in the rich theoretical traditions and debates in Latin American studies. This book can also be a strong core volume for courses on other developing areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America in the World Economy considers the dual aspect of Latin American development: how external factors (phases of world capitalism since Columbus) interweave with internal factors (Latin American culture, politics, and social groups). Weaver skillfully demonstrates how domestic social conflicts and power relations have consistently capitalized on changes in the international economy while, conversely, engagement with the international economy has consistently constrained local struggles and patterns of change. Over half of Latin America in the World Economy focuses on the short twentieth century (after 1930), and the way that the book frames recent events and processes in broad historical and comparative terms is appropriate for courses on world history and comparative development as well as for more specialized courses on Latin America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his second book, Andre Gunder Frank expands on the theme presented in his influential study Capitalism and Underdevelopment in Latin America. It is the colonial structure of world capitalism, in his view, which produced and maintains the underdevelopment characteristic of Latin America and the rest of the Third World. This colonial structure penetrates everywhere in Latin America, forming and transforming all its features in obedience to its own imperatives and thereby imposing upon the region those characteristic features of poverty and backwardness which are not primarily the remnants of an ancient "feudal" past but the direct products of capitalism. This development of underdevelopment will persist, Frank argues, until the people of Latin America free themselves from world capitalism by means of revolution.

Book excerpt: These three self-contained units of study will help community college students learn about the economics, international relations, and politics of Latin America. Each unit can be used independently and contains introductory notes for instructors, student materials, and a bibliography. Students are expected to read and discuss the reading selections provided. The first unit deals with Latin American economic life. Introductory notes for instructors include discussions of four facets of economic development, reasons why Latin America provides a good model for studying third world economics, and Latin America's relationship to the rest of the Third World. Students read about the perceptions of the international system; the internal organization of Latin American economic life; the modern, criollo, and modified indigenous sectors; different economic formations; and geography and institutions. The second unit deals with the problems of international communication between the United States and Mexico. The introductory section for teachers suggests topics for student oral presentations. Themes for classroom discussion are also included in this unit. Students read about and discuss Mexico in U.S. history and the United States in Mexican history; asymmetrical perceptions and relationships; internal structural changes influencing communications; and possibilities for improving communications. The third unit is concerned with the changes resulting from rapid population growth in Latin America, and more specifically in Mexico. Students gain an understanding of population growth in less developed countries and learn about some of the changes and problems it can create, economically, socially, and politically. (Author/RM)
