Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of his passion to bring glory to God, Ernie Klassen is particularly interested in the revival of God’s people and the awakening of the lost. He believes strongly that God-honoring, Christ-exalting, and Spirit-empowered preaching plays a critical role in revival and awakening. No one models this dynamic better than Jonathan Edwards. He was a pastor who was a protagonist of the First Great Awakening. He thought deeply and critically about religious movements, and his reflections and sermons provide valuable “fodder” for reflection. Revival Preaching extracts the most important lessons of Edwards’s writings and sermons for preaching in today’s world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. This work considers the post-war folk revival in Britain from a popular music studies perspective. Michael Brocken provides a historical narrative of the folk revival from the 1940s up until the 1990s, beginning with the emergence of the revival from within and around the left-wing movements of the 1940s and 1950s. Key figures and organizations such as the Workers' Music Association, the BBC, the English Folk Dance and Song Society, A.L. Lloyd and Ewan MacColl are examined closely. By looking at the work of British Communist Party splinter groups it is possible to see the refraction of folk music as a political tool. Brocken openly challenges folk historicity and internal narrative by discussing the convergence of folk and pop during the 1950s and 1960s. The significant development of the folk/rock hybrid is considered alongside "class", "Americana", radio and the strength of pop culture. Brocken shows how the dichotomy of artistic (natural) versus industry (mass-produced) music since the 1970s has led to a fragmentation and constriction of the folk revival. The study concludes with a look at the upsurge of the folk music industry, the growth of festivals and the implications of the Internet for the British folk revival. Brocken suggests the way forward should involve an acknowledgement that folk music is not superior to but is, in fact, a form of popular music.

Revival in the City traces the development of American revivalism, the support of the daily press "image makers," and working class acceptance of a populist form of conservative evangelicalism in Canada. Eric Crouse argues that by 1911, despite the endorsement of the masses and the press, protestant leaders, were less willing to work together to champion modern revivalism that embraced orthodox theology and popular culture strategies."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards (1703-58) is considered one of the greatest theologians and philosophers of evangelicalism, who also served as a pastor, missionary, and revival leader. By underscoring "Regeneration, Revival, and Creation" in Edwards's thought, this volume uniquely captures the need to delve into Edwards's theological and philosophical rationale for the revivals, alongside key questions concerning the historical context and Edwards's standing in his own tradition. This book gathers the work of scholars working in the areas of historical, systematic, and analytic theology, church history, psychology, and biology. It contains papers presented at the inaugural conference of the Jonathan Edwards Center at Gateway Seminary (JEC West). Bringing together some of the leading authorities as well as up-and-coming Edwards scholars working today, this collection advances the questions of regeneration, revival, and creation in fresh new ways. With contributions from: Adriaan Neele, Douglas Sweeney, Chris Woznicki, Obbie Tyler Todd, Peter Jung, Michael Haykin, Ryan J. Martin, Mark Rogers, Allen Yeh, Oliver Crisp, Walter Schultz, John Shouse, Rob Boss, Lisanne Winslow, and Robert Caldwell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a call for men to prayer, and to pray for revival in our churches. Drawing from GodÕs commands and lessons in both the Old and New Testament, as well as our rich Church history through men such as Irenaeus, Calvin and Edwards, we can develop a prayer life that acknowledges GodÕs desire to bring about His kingdom and pleads with Him to do so. A kingdom of peace and healing, of justice and life. For a revived land is transformed, by the love and respect people have for others, the affirmation of life, the care for the poor and needy, and by justice for all, not merely for a select few. But the first heart that must be transformed is our own and this comes through prayer. The 30 meditations of this book come complete with questions as well as a prayer incorporating the lesson. May this book encourage us to pray that God will change hearts in our land, including our own, and that God will transform our society.

Starting at the first anniversary of the inauguration, Wolffe paints a portrait of a White House at work under exceptional strain across a sweeping set of challenges: from health care reform to a struggling economy, from two wars to terrorism.
