This book was released on 2013-01-28 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work represents the first comparative study of the folk revival movement in Anglophone Canada and the United States and combines this with discussion of the way folk music intersected with, and was structured by, conceptions of national affinity and national identity. Based on original archival research carried out principally in Toronto, Washington and Ottawa, it is a thematic, rather than general, study of the movement which has been influenced by various academic disciplines, including history, musicology and folklore. Dr Gillian Mitchell begins with an introduction that provides vital context for the subject by tracing the development of the idea of 'the folk', folklore and folk music since the nineteenth century, and how that idea has been applied in the North American context, before going on to examine links forged by folksong collectors, artists and musicians between folk music and national identity during the early twentieth century. With the 'boom' of the revival in the early sixties came the ways in which the movement in both countries proudly promoted a vision of nation that was inclusive, pluralistic and eclectic. It was a vision which proved compatible with both Canada and America, enabling both countries to explore a diversity of music without exclusiveness or narrowness of focus. It was also closely linked to the idealism of the grassroots political movements of the early 1960s, such as integrationist civil rights, and the early student movement. After 1965 this inclusive vision of nation in folk music began to wane. While the celebrations of the Centennial in Canada led to a re-emphasis on the 'Canadianness' of Canadian folk music, the turbulent events in the United States led many ex-revivalists to turn away from politics and embrace new identities as introspective singer-songwriters. Many of those who remained interested in traditional folk music styles, such as Celtic or Klezmer music, tended to be very insular and conservative in their approach, rather than linking their chosen genre to a wider world of folk music; however, more recent attempts at 'fusion' or 'world' music suggest a return to the eclectic spirit of the 1960s folk revival. Thus, from 1945 to 1980, folk music in Canada and America experienced an evolving and complex relationship with the concepts of nation and national identity. Students will find the book useful as an introduction, not only to key themes in the folk revival, but also to concepts in the study of national identity and to topics in American and Canadian cultural history. Academic specialists will encounter an alternative perspective from the more general, broad approach offered by earlier histories of the folk revival movement.

Book excerpt: A key figure during the Great Awakening, Jonathan Edwards wrote this important discourse, The Distinguishing Marks of a Work of the Spirit of God, in 1741, just after the revival had reached its peak. In his thorough exploration of the true and false signs of revival, drawn from 1 John 4, Edwards concludes that while a movement may be accompanied by excesses and questionable actions, these signs do not necessarily disqualify it as authentic. In a refreshing way Edwards embraces a genuine enthusiasm in these manifestations while stressing the need for biblical discernment. His critique is kind and gentle as he points to the true marks of revival: love and humility. In The Spirit of Revival, Parrish makes Edwards's entire work more accessible by modernizing the text and adding explanatory notes. R. C. Sproul's extended introduction compares the great theologian's time to our own, and the preface by Edwards's contemporary William Cooper rings resoundingly to the people of God today. Edwards's message provides more than just insight into the Great Awakening. It is a map to follow for all revivals in all times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a call for men to prayer, and to pray for revival in our churches. Drawing from God's commands and lessons in both the Old and New Testament, as well as our rich Church history through men such as Irenaeus, Calvin and Edwards, we can develop a prayer life that acknowledges God's desire to bring about His kingdom and pleads with Him to do so. A kingdom of peace and healing, of justice and life. For a revived land is transformed, by the love and respect people have for others, the affirmation of life, the care for the poor and needy, and by justice for all, not merely for a select few. But the first heart that must be transformed is our own and this comes through prayer. The 30 meditations of this book come complete with questions as well as a prayer incorporating the lesson. May this book encourage us to pray that God will change hearts in our land, including our own, and that God will transform our society.

Book excerpt: "Fifteen-year-old Miriam Horton is the oldest daughter of a Southern Baptist preacher and faith healer. Every summer, the Hortons pack themselves tight in their old minivan and travel through small southern towns for revival season: the time during which Miriam's father holds massive healing services, drawing thousands of people looking to be cured of ailments and disease. This revival season, though, doesn't go as planned, and after one service in which Reverend Horton's healing powers are tested like never before, Miriam witnesses a shocking act of violence behind the revival tent. From that point on, Miriam's belief in her father-and in her faith-begins to waver. When the Hortons return home from the revival circuit, Miriam's confusion only grows as she discovers that she might have the power to heal-even though her father and the church have always made it clear that this power is denied to women. Over the course of the next year, and as a new revival circuit approaches, Miriam must decide between her faith, her family, and her newfound power that might be able to save others, but, if discovered by her father, could destroy Miriam. A story of spiritual awakening and disillusionment in a southern, black, Evangelical community, REVIVAL SEASON is a haunting novel of complicated familial love, a young girl's coming into herself, and the price of being among the community of the faithful"--

Book excerpt: Mr. Hayden points out that the key to the revival which arose under Spurgeon's ministry, and went on almost continuously throughout his long and fruitful pulpit career, is to be found in Spurgeon's autobiography. There, Spurgeon reveals and credits the membership of his new Park Street Chapel and their earnest, all-out prayer for his success in the ministry. This documented study of Spurgeon's emphasis upon and attitude toward revival will reward today's reader with insight into and understanding of our need for revival today--and the only source from which this revival can come. A prayerful reading of these pages could well result in renewed and revitalized Christian living among God's people today.

This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English folk revival cannot be understood when divorced from the history of post-war England, yet the existing scholarship fails to fully engage with its role in the social and political fabric of the nation. Postwar Politics, Society and the Folk Revival in England is the first study to interweave the story of a gentrifying folk revival with the socio-political tensions inherent in England's postwar transition from austerity to affluence. Julia Mitchell skillfully situates the English folk revival in the context of the rise of the new left, the decline of heavy industry, the rise of local, regional and national identities, the 'Americanisation' of English culture and the development of mass culture. In doing so, she demonstrates that the success of the English folk revival derived from its sense of authenticity and its engagement with topical social and political issues, such as the conflicted legacy of the Welfare State, the fight for nuclear disarmament and the fallout of nationalization. In addition, she shrewdly compares the US and British revival to identify the links but also what was distinctive about the movement in Britain. Drawing on primary sources from folk archives, the BBC, the music press and interviews with participants, this is a theoretically engaged and sophisticated analysis of how postwar culture shaped the folk revival in England.
