Book excerpt: Americans have long enjoyed the benefits of what is without a doubt the world's safest, most efficient, effective, and extensive transportation network ever constructed. Everyday these transit systems move millions of people to work and home again. It is a system that helps keep shipping costs low, while enabling Americans to live where and how they want. Unfortunately, it is also a system at risk. Over the past few decades, focus on the system has been lost and now money is being spread over numerous programs, which causes a dilution of federal funds taxpayers invest each year. This book presents and discusses the reasons why a better plan must be introduced in order to better transmit services and create a stronger economy.
Book Synopsis Transportation Decision Making by : Kumares C. Sinha
Download or read book Transportation Decision Making written by Kumares C. Sinha and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-05-25 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation Decision Making A GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE DECISION MAKING WRITTEN JUST FOR TRANSPORTATION PROFESSIONALS This pioneering text provides a holistic approach to decision making in transportation project development and programming, which can help transportation professionals to optimize their investment choices. The authors present a proven set of methodologies for evaluating transportation projects that ensures that all costs and impacts are taken into consideration. The text’s logical organization gets readers started with a solid foundation in basic principles and then progressively builds on that foundation. Topics covered include: Developing performance measures for evaluation, estimating travel demand, and costing transportation projects Performing an economic efficiency evaluation that accounts for such factors as travel time, safety, and vehicle operating costs Evaluating a project’s impact on economic development and land use as well as its impact on society and culture Assessing a project’s environmental impact, including air quality, noise, ecology, water resources, and aesthetics Evaluating alternative projects on the basis of multiple performance criteria Programming transportation investments so that resources can be optimally allocated to meet facility-specific and system-wide goals Each chapter begins with basic definitions and concepts followed by a methodology for impact assessment. Relevant legislation is discussed and available software for performing evaluations is presented. At the end of each chapter, readers are provided resources for detailed investigation of particular topics. These include Internet sites and publications of international and domestic agencies and research institutions. The authors also provide a companion Web site that offers updates, data for analysis, and case histories of project evaluation and decision making. Given that billions of dollars are spent each year on transportation systems in the United States alone, and that there is a need for thorough and rational evaluation and decision making for cost-effective system preservation and improvement, this text should be on the desks of all transportation planners, engineers, and educators. With exercises in every chapter, this text is an ideal coursebook for the subject of transportation systems analysis and evaluation.
Book Synopsis The Infrastructure We Ride On by : Joseph Berechman
Download or read book The Infrastructure We Ride On written by Joseph Berechman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the various economic and institutional factors that explain why huge investments are made in unworthy transportation mega-projects in the US and other countries. It is based on research, the general literature, economic analyses, and results from a specifically collected database showing that a significant proportion of implemented mega-projects have been found to be inferior ex-ante or incapable of delivering the returns they promised ex-post. Transportation infrastructure and other public investments of a similar scope (“mega-projects”) reflect public sector priorities and objectives, non-pecuniary as well as financial constraints, and a range of decision-making processes. This book describes how decisions made in the public sector with respect to transportation infrastructure investments are affected by the large populations and territories they serve, the estimation of the substantial opportunity costs they entail, the formal procedures instituted for quantitatively appraising projected outcomes and monetary returns, and the political environment in which these decisions are made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An efficient transportation system reduces the cost of distance by moving people and goods from their origins to their destinations as cheaply, quickly, and safely as possible. By enabling individuals and firms to be more productive, transportation provides the foundation for the development and growth of industries and an entire economy. Clifford Winston, Jia Yan, and Associates argue that competition and innovation are the key drivers of an efficient transportation system. The authors provide new evidence that transportation deregulation and privatization that spur additional competition among carriers and infrastructure providers, as well as new innovations that create autonomous transportation services, have the potential to rid the US transportation system of its major inefficiencies and revitalize the nation.

Book Synopsis Transport Investment and Economic Development by : David Banister
Download or read book Transport Investment and Economic Development written by David Banister and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-29 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major concern of all decision makers has been to ensure that there are clear benefits from transport investment proposals. The travel time savings are clear, but the wider economic developments have presented enormous difficulty in terms of both theoretical arguments and empirical evidence. This book reviews the history of the debate and argues that the agenda has changed. These issues are presented together with a major analytical investigation of macroeconomic models, evaluation in transport and microeconomic approaches. The final part of the book presents a series of case studies for road, rail and airport investment schemes, particularly focusing on the economic development aspects.
Book Synopsis Evolving Transportation Networks by : Feng Xie
Download or read book Evolving Transportation Networks written by Feng Xie and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-15 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two centuries, the development of modern transportation has significantly transformed human life. The main theme of this book is to understand the complexity of transportation development and model the process of network growth including its determining factors, which may be topological, morphological, temporal, technological, economic, managerial, social or political. Using multidimensional concepts and methods, the authors develop a holistic framework to represent network growth as an open and complex process with models that demonstrate in a scientific way how numerous independent decisions made by entities such as travelers, property owners, developers, and public jurisdictions could result in a coherent network of facilities on the ground. Models are proposed from innovative perspectives including self-organization, degeneration, and sequential connection to interpret the evolutionary growth of transportation networks in explicit consideration of independent economic and regulatory initiatives. Employing these models, the authors survey a series of topics ranging from network hierarchy and topology to first mover advantage. The authors demonstrate, with a wide spectrum of empirical and theoretical evidence, that network growth follows a path that is not only logical in retrospect, but also predictable and manageable from a planning perspective. In the larger scheme of innovative transportation planning, this book provides a re-consideration of conventional planning practice and sets the stage for further development on the theory and practice of the next-generation, evolutionary planning approach in transportation, making it of interest to scholars and practitioners alike in the field of transportation .

Book Synopsis Sustainable Transportation Decision-Making by : Hwan Yong Kim

Book excerpt: Building a new infrastructure facility requires a significant amount of time and expense. This is particularly true for investments in transportation for their longstanding and great degree of impact on society. The scope of time and money involved does not mean, however, we only focus on the economies of scale and may ignore other aspects of the built environment. To this extent, how can we achieve a more balanced perspective in infrastructure decision-making? In addition, what aspects should be considered when making more sustainable decisions about transportation investments? These two questions are the foundations of this study. This dissertation shares its process in part with a previous research project -- Texas Urban Triangle (TUT). Although the TUT research generated diverse variables and created possible implementations of spatial decision support system (SDSS), the methodology still demands improvement. The current method has been developed to create suitable routes but is not designed to rank or make comparisons. This is admittedly one of the biggest shortfalls in the general SDSS approach, but is also where I see as an opportunity to make alternative interpretation more comprehensive and effective. The main purpose of this dissertation is to develop a Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS) that will lead to more balanced decision-making in transportation investment and optimize the most sustainable high-speed rail (HSR) route. The decision support system developed here explicitly elaborates the advantages and disadvantages of a transportation corridor in three particular perspectives: construction (fixed costs); operation (maintenance costs); and externalities (social and environmental costs), with a specific focus on environmental externalities. Considering more environmental features in rail routing will offset short-term economic losses and creates more sustainable environments in long-term infrastructure planning.
