Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revision of the North American Ground Squirrels: With a Classification of the North American Sciuridae Ground squirrel burrows are often a serious menace to the safety of irrigation systems. Birdseye (1912, p. 13) tells of a serious washout caused by irrigation water escaping through a Columbian ground squirrel's burrow located in an orchard on the bench above. Lantz (1918, p 14) cites the destruction of 6 acres of alfalfa caused by the burrowing of a California ground squirrel into an irrigation embankment. An additional count against certain of the ground squirrels is based on the part they play in the dissemination of diseases often fatal to man, as is the case with the Columbian ground squirrel in the spread of spotted fever, he California, Oregon, Uinta, Colum bian, and Richardson's ground squirrels in the spread of bubonic plague, and the California ground squirrel and the Utah rock squirrel in the spread of tularemia. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "North American Tree Squirrels illuminates the everyday lives of gray and fox squirrels, the two most dominant types of tree squirrels of the eastern United States. Drawing on more than twenty years of research, Michael A. Steele and John L. Koprowski detail the behavior, reproduction, diet, physiology, and habitat use of these engaging rodents, as well as their complex interdependent relationships with seed-producing trees. The authors compare and contrast tree squirrels with other members of their family, including ground squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, and prairie dogs. In addition to scientific revelations, the authors describe their fieldwork, from the pitfalls of patrolling forests at night in order to check nest boxes to the challenges of fitting squirrels with radio-tracking collars." "Both professional biologists and curious amateur naturalists will find North American Tree Squirrels entertaining, useful, and informative."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book The Wild Mammals of Missouri written by Charles Walsh Schwartz and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by two of Missouri's most distinguished conservationists, The Wild Mammals of Missouri has been the definitive guide to mammals of this state for over forty years. Now the University of Missouri Press is pleased to release an updated edition, revised by Elizabeth R. Schwartz, reflecting the changes in Missouri's mammalian fauna and including the latest taxonomic revisions. Maintaining the original's successful format and the language that made the book accessible to both professional and lay readers, the revised edition incorporates throughout new knowledge of the various species of mammals of Missouri. Most notable is the addition of a new resident species, the nine-banded armadillo. Several other taxonomic and distributional changes are reflected and the range maps have been revised to show significant changes. Charles Schwartz's meticulously rendered drawings capture the spirit of his subjects while remaining technically accurate. These drawings range from fully rendered portraits to illustrations of dentition and skulls, tracks, and other identifying characteristics, to vignettes showing the mammals engaged in characteristic behaviors. Also included in this volume are discussions of all biological and ecological aspects of the mammals including distribution and abundance, habitat and home, habits, food, reproduction, adversities faced, and conservation and management concerns. The Schwartzes' lifelong dedication to state and national conservation and their vast biological knowledge are apparent throughout the pages of this attractive reference guide. People of all ages and backgrounds will find The Wild Mammals of Missouri an invaluable guide to the study of Missouri's mammals.
