Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revised Normal Lessons This book is a revision of Outline Normal Lessons, first printed as leaf lets, and afterward, in 1885, gathered into a book. Many editions of this work have been issued, and its practical use in the work of teaching has suggested some modifications in its plan. In this edition the lessons on the Canon, on Versions, and on Evidences have been omitted, in the author's expectation of preparing another volume of the series on those themes and others related to them. In this book we present a general view of the most important subjects necessary to a knowledge of the Bible and of Sunday school work. All the lessons taken from the former work have been carefully revised, and nearly all of them have been rewritten. A work of this character can have little that is new; for it aims to present the old and accepted facts and principles. We present no claim of originality, either in matter or in method, but have simply aimed to furnish such an arrangement of needed information as would best serve those who are preparing to teach in the Sunday school. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in English, Vol. 2 In a few particulars, usage has changed in recent years. Wherever this was the case, statements have been changed in the present book so as to accord with the best modern authority. In the treatment of composition, the series has been thoroughly revised and enlarged in accordance with the spirit and the method of a changed language curriculum. In grammar, the principal changes have been in the direction of simplification and abridgment. It is in the teaching of composition that the greatest ad vances in elementary English instruction have been made in recent years. Consequently, some portions of the earlier Reed and Kellogg have been eliminated, and a great deal of new material has been added. The increasing use of literature, both prose and poetry, not only as models but as a means of stirring the imagination and freeing tongue and pen, is reflected in this revision. The use of pictures, the relation of expression work to life, the harmonizing Of the book problems with the child's world, are here emphasized. It has not been forgotten, however, that every good text in this field must be in large measure a drill book. Much talking and much writing on subjects which occupy the pupil's mind - to which he gives attention in his other studies or in which he can easily be led to take an inter est - have been provided for. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Normal Readers, Vol. 3 For the primary teacher the study of history, especially in its beginnings, is extremely important. If we would really understand the minds of children, let us turn back to the pages of the past where we may follow the development of the race as it has been led forward toward perfect adjustment and realization, for in the develop ment of the race we may see that of the typical child. By actual experience in teaching we learn that certain things appeal most to children and are therefore most effective at specific stages of their advancement. We are often able to determine very nearly the learning point of the child's mind, and by the study of the child in the light of history we come to understand why all this is true. We see that those elements which have entered most persistently into the development of the race are the very things in which the child finds his greatest delight. This truth has a deep significance in practical education. If we as teachers will be guided by the natural spontaneous interest of children and if we will at the same time direct this interest toward their highest good, following in advance as it were, we shall not be found blindly striving against Nature and perhaps checking many a God-given impulse, but by understanding the child's real need we may be able to supply it more fully and exactly and so to assist the natural course of his advancement. This is the central thought of the American Normal Readers. An effort has been made throughout to provide material interesting and truly profitable to the child because suited to his needs, and helpful and suggestive to the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in English for the Pupils of the Common Schools To a mature mind the study of technical grammar is both pleasant and profitable, but to the majority oi school children it is neither. As soon, however, as a child comes to have any regard for the good opinion of others, he is interested in learning how to speak and write correctly, and enjoys any lesson which he feels is directly helping him to this end. The authors have endeavoured to keep these facts constantly in mind, and have sought to make each losson of such a character that its practical value may he at once apparent to the pupil. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Graded Lessons in Arithmetic, Vol. 7 This seventh book of the series follows the same general plan as the preceding books. The first few pages are devoted to a systematic review of the work of the preceding grade. Then the new work for the year is taken up and that is followed by a general summary. This arrangement is shown in the table of contents. In the advanced work of the grade especial emphasis is given to the applications of percentage, including bank discount, commercial discount, insurance, commission, taxes, etc. Great care has been taken to present these topics in a clear and simple manner so that the pupils may be able to understand them, without the help of the teacher. The aim has been to present a large variety of reasonable problems that appeal to the pupils as coming Within the range of their experiences. Several lessons are given that bear especially upon the work in manual training, thus connecting that important branch with the regular work of the schoolroom. For the same reason a few lessons are given in home furnishing and in domestic economy. The oral work, because of its importance, is emphasized here as it has been in the earlier books of the series. The work in algebra has been extended and the pupils are introduced for the first time to the simplest principles of constructive geometry. Most of the matter which is here presented is doubtless not new. Its form, however, is new, and is the result of many years of teaching and of study in both secular and Sunday schools. For convenience' sake, the topics discussed have been arranged in ten lessons, with the thought that they would thus serve' for ten consecutive morn ing or afternoon sessions at any of our Sunday-school assemblies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Revised Insular First Reader IN this book the child is taught to read, write and talk in English upon familiar topics of his daily life, -to read and to express thoughts about the things which are of most interest to him. The vocabulary includes that of the Primer and the most important ideas concerning playing, going to school, eating, sleeping, visiting, day and night, buying and selling, in the market, at home, at school, etc. This use of familiar and interesting ideas not only makes the teaching and learning of the English language far easier, but also encourages its use independently by the pupil. Speaking and writing form parts of each lesson. The forms of the lessons distinctly encourage the speaking of English. New words are learned in connection with the thoughts which they must be used to express. This is very important. Further, the use of new words in writing is strongly emphasized. The book contains an unusual amount of script. New words are either introduced in script or are used in script in statements, which form the basis for further written work. The uses and many inflections of the parts of speech, the tenses of the verb, the use and comparison of adjectives and adverbs, the more important prepositions, interrogative and personal pronouns, the various kinds of sentences, the use of simple adjective and adverbial clauses, receive special consideration in the text. By phonetic classifications of the words and by special exercises, phonics are gradually introduced and developed. Drawing and games, which are valuable helps in the teaching of English, are given due attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
