Book excerpt: This fascinating and informative series of Soviet space program history reports begins with this reproduction of two truly historic documents: Review of the Soviet Space Program 1967 and Soviet Space Programs, 1966-70. The history of the Russian spaceflight effort is chronicled in these superb Congressional Research Service reports to Congress. The early reports were authored by a renowned Soviet space expert, the late Dr. Charles S. Sheldon. They provide an "as-it-happened" contemporaneous account of every element of the Soviet program: manned and unmanned programs, military satellite, launch sites, compendiums of official statements, plans, and much more. Every student of space flight needs to have these important reports in their collection.Review of the Soviet Space Program 1967 With Comparative United States Data - Tools available to Soviet space flight * Launch sites for orbiting vehicles * Soviet launch vehicles * Basic space flight statistics * Soviet space program development * The early Sputniks 1957-58 * Early Luna flights 1959 * The Vostok program 1960-63 * Interplanetary Zond flights 1960-67 * The next generation Luna program 1963-66 * Polet vehicles 1963-64 * Elektron vehicles 1964 * Renewed manned flights with Voskhod 1964-65 * The Kosmos series of launchings 1962-67 * The Kapustin Yar series * Tyuratam recoverable series * Tyuratam large nonrecoverable series * Tyuratam smaller nonrecoverable payloads * Remaining Kosmos program elements * The Molniya series 1965-67 * Proton payloads 1965-66 * Renewed manned flights with Soyuz 1966-67 * Soviet policy and plans * Organization of the Soviet space program * Military and civilian roles * International cooperation * Shares of gross national product allocated to space * Benefits sought from the space program * Mission goals of the Soviet space program * Philosophy on the future of space * Sources and methodology for analysis * Soviet policies on information * Western official data on space flight * Policy shifts on space publicity * Security policy * Glossary * Addendum: * Venus results in 1967 * Automatic docking in space * High level of activity * Early prospects * Updating the log of space flights * Soviet orbital weapon systemSoviet Space Programs, 1966-70 - I. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the public image of the Soviet cosmonaut was designed and reimagined over time In this book, Cathleen Lewis discusses how the public image of the Soviet cosmonaut developed beginning in the 1950s and the ways this icon has been reinterpreted throughout the years and in contemporary Russia. Compiling material and cultural representations of the cosmonaut program, Lewis provides a new perspective on the story of Soviet spaceflight, highlighting how the government has celebrated figures such as Yuri Gagarin and Valentina Tereshkova through newspapers, radio, parades, monuments, museums, films, and even postage stamps and lapel pins. Lewis’s analysis shows that during the Space Race, Nikita Khrushchev mobilized cosmonaut stories and images to symbolize the forward-looking Soviet state and distract from the costs of the Cold War. Public perceptions shifted after the first Soviet spaceflight fatality and failure to reach the Moon, yet cosmonaut imagery was still effective propaganda, evolving through the USSR’s collapse in 1991 and seen today in Vladimir Putin’s government cooperation for a film on the 1985 rescue of the Salyut 7 space station. Looking closely at the process through which Russians continue to reexamine their past, Lewis argues that the cultural memory of spaceflight remains especially potent among other collective Soviet memories.

This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the clash of ideologies represented by the Cold War, even the heavens were not immune to militarization. Satellites and space programs became critical elements among the national security objectives of both the United States and the Soviet Union. According to US Presidents and the Militarization of Space, 1946–1967, three American presidents in succession shared a fundamental objective of preserving space as a weapons-free frontier for the benefit of all humanity. Between 1953 and 1967 Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson all saw nonaggressive military satellite development, as well as the civilian space program, as means to favorably shape the international community’s opinion of the scientific, technological, and military capabilities of the United States. Sean N. Kalic’s reinterpretation of the development of US space policy, based on documents declassified in the past decade, demonstrates that a single vision for the appropriate uses of space characterized American strategies across parties and administrations during this period. Significantly, Kalic’s findings contradict the popular opinion that the United States sought to weaponize space and calls into question the traditional interpretation of the space race as a simple action/reaction paradigm. Indeed, beyond serving as a symbol and ambassador of US technological capability, its satellite program provided the United States with advanced, nonaggressive military intelligence-gathering platforms that proved critical in assessing the strategic nuclear balance between the United States and the Soviet Union. It also aided the three administrations in countering the Soviet Union’s increasing international prestige after its series of space firsts, beginning with the launch of Sputnik in 1957.
