Book excerpt: The "Bullia group", comprising those gastropods of the family Nassariidae not assignable to the subfamilies Nassariinae or Cylleninae, is a relatively small group presently confined to temperate and subtropical shallow water habitats in the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The group has a significant and complex fossil record, however, that indicates greater morphological diversity and wider geographic distribution in the Tertiary than today. This fossil record suggests that Nassariidae arose and diversified initially in the New World in the Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary, spreading to Europe, Africa and beyond by Miocene times. The genus Bullia s. s. is today an important and diverse component of the South African sandy shore molluscan fauna. the current status of Bullia s.s., however, is probably a relatively recent development. Bullia apparently did not reach Africa until the late Miocene or early Pliocene, and its approximately 40 living species are of Pliocene age or younger. Consideration of the phylogenetic and biogeographic history of the entire group suggests that the ancestors of modern Bullia s.s. may have reached Africa from South America via chance dispersal across open ocean, a mode usually not seriously considered for marine prosobranchs lacking a planktonic larval stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chesapeake Miocene will always be considered a paleontological treasure. Given the richness and accessibility of the Maryland and Virginia Miocene shell beds, it seems remarkable that very few people have ever described new species from these strata over the past 185 years. Until now. Integrating elements from paleontology, geology, environmental science, and ecology, Molluscan Paleontology of the Chesapeake Miocene assembles previous research and the authors’ experience into a synoptic field guide. The most complete compendium of Miocene species created since 1904, this long-awaited resource lists nearly 500 species. It contains illustrations of 260 species, including more than 60 not found in any previous book and 26 newly discovered. It describes Chesapeake molluscan faunas in terms of local geology, paleoceanography, and marine paleobiology. Organized by stratigraphic geology, the book covers fossils of the Eastover, St Mary’s, Choptank, and Calvert Formations. It illustrates 24 collecting sites and fossil exposures, showing details of in situ specimens, along with maps of 4 Miocene paleoseas and detailed stratigraphic columns for Maryland and northern Virginia. The text is accompanied by downloadable resources with color illustrations of the forty known species of ecphora shells. Armed with these, you should be able to identify the species found in the amazingly rich shell beds of the Chesapeake Bay area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nong Nor is a prehistoric coastal site located in the Chonburi Province, Southeast Asia. It was excavated between 1991 and 1993 and shows two phases of occupation: the first, c.2500 BC, a brief stay by a community of hunter-gatherers living on shellfish, dolphins and sharks; the second, an extensive cemetery of 170 graves dating to 1100-700 BC, some with grave goods and a small group of unusually wealthy ones. The authors, in their conclusion, suggest that the first inhabitants of Nong Nor may have been ancestral to the later inhabitants of nearby Khok Phanom Di.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The marine Eocene-Oligocene transition of 34 million years ago was a critical turning point in Earth's climatic history, when the warm, high-diversity "greenhouse" world of the early Eocene ceded to the glacial, "icehouse" conditions of the early Oligocene. This book surveys the advances in stratigraphic and paleontological research and isotopic analysis made since 1989 in regard to marine deposits around the world. In particular, it summarizes the high-resolution details of the so-called doubthouse interval (roughly 45 to 34 million years ago), which is critical to testing climatic and evolutionary hypotheses about the Eocene deterioration. The authors' goals are to discuss the latest information concerning climatic and oceanographic change associated with this transition and to examine geographic and taxonomic patterns in biotic turnover that provide clues about where, when, and how fast these environmental changes happened. They address a range of topics, including the tectonic and paleogeographic setting of the Paleogene; specific issues related to the stratigraphy of shelf deposits; advances in recognizing and correlating boundary sections; trends in the expression of climate change; and patterns of faunal and floral turnover. In the process, they produce a valuable synthesis of patterns of change by latitude and environment.
