Book excerpt: The EU Physical Agents (Electromagnetic Fields) Directive (which was adopted in April 2004 and must be enshrined in law in EU member states by April 2008) sets out exposure limits designed to provide a minimum standard of protection from occupational exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF). The Committee's report focuses on the impact of this Directive on the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment for diagnosis, treatment and research use. This is the first of three case studies under the Committee's over-arching inquiry into the way scientific evidence and advice is used by the UK Government to influence policy at EU level. It finds that there were failings in the way scientific advice was used to inform the Directive, both in Brussels and in the UK. The European Commission relied too heavily on one source of advice and was not sufficiently responsive to concerns raised by the magnetic resonance community, whilst there was serious failings in the consultation process in the UK, particular by the Health and Safety Executive and by the Health Protection Agency.

This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government is failing to clearly and effectively communicate climate science to the public. There is little evidence of co-ordination amongst Government, government agencies and public bodies on communicating climate science, despite various policies at national and regional level to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The mandate to act on climate can only be maintained if the electorate are convinced that the Government is acting on the basis of strong scientific evidence. Ministers therefore need to do more to demonstrate that is the case and consistently reflect the Government approach in all their communications, especially with the media. The report also criticises the BBC for its reporting on the issue. It points out that BBC News teams continue to make mistakes in their coverage of climate science by giving opinions and scientific fact the same weight. The BBC is called to develop clear editorial guidelines for all commentators and presenters on the facts of climate that should be used to challenge statements, from either side of the climate policy debate, that stray too far from the scientific facts. It is important that climate science is presented separately from any subsequent policy response. Government should work with the learned societies and national academies to develop a source of information on climate science that is discrete from policy delivery, comprehensible to the general public and responsive to both current developments and uncertainties in the science

Book Synopsis Social Mentality and Public Opinion in China by : Fanbin Zeng
Download or read book Social Mentality and Public Opinion in China written by Fanbin Zeng and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-24 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between social mentality, public opinion, media, and other factors through mixed methods in China, especially since the 21st century. The book deploys qualitative and quantitative research and adopts a multi-disciplinary perspective and diverse research methods. The studies are built on and contribute to the burgeoning literature seeking to anatomise the relationship between social mentality, media, and public opinion from the point of view of sociology and communication. It also aims to explore how media can be used to appease public opinion. As the first systematic study of the interconnection between social mentality and public opinion, this book provides empirical support and a theoretical framework for both areas. It will thus be a great read for students and scholars of communication, sociology, and social psychology, especially for those with a focus on China and new media.

Book Synopsis Integrated Futures and Transport Choices by : Julian Hine
Download or read book Integrated Futures and Transport Choices written by Julian Hine and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. The UK transport White Paper "A New Deal for Transport" and new Transport Acts for England, Wales and Scotland have indicated and defined the future direction and policy agenda of national governments. The need for integrated transport raises key policy issues, among which are: the importance of sustainability; and the integration of transport policy with other areas of public policy, such as social exclusion and health. The idea of this direction in policy has implications for the changing nature of work, traveller information, interchange and public transport, freight distribution and the use of new technology. This volume also examines key areas of policy and regulation, which are developing as a result of the White Paper and the new Transport Acts. The volume brings together leading UK academics in the field of transport studies to discuss and reflect on these issues, and the state of transport policy in the UK within this new and developing policy framework.

Book Synopsis Communicating Health Risks to the Public by : Dawn Hillier
Download or read book Communicating Health Risks to the Public written by Dawn Hillier and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews current health risk communication strategies, and examines and assesses the technical and psycho-sociological tools available to support risk communication plans. It brings together approaches to risk communication from a number of countries and describes the techniques, including drama, storytelling and scenarios that are used to identify and prioritise key communication issues, and to identify policy responses. The book also provides a review of the methods and tools available for risk assessment, risk communication and priority setting, which are relevant not only to practitioners but to health planning more generally, and to many other areas of public health and policy. The discussion of these techniques is supported by case studies, and is concluded by a chapter reflecting on the conceptual and research issues that still need to be addressed. It also proposes new directions for risk communication that key into the public imagination with the aim of gaining their trust and confidence in the risk messages. Communicating Health Risks to the Public: A Global Perspective brings together a wide variety of perspectives on risk communication, from the perspectives of health, anthropology, psychology, and media. It should be of interest not only to those involved in risk assessment or communication but to anyone interested in the role of science and the media in the political process.
