Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground Zero Earth It appears that the standard solutions to our basic problems has deteriorated into yelling and screaming. I think there is a better way! I have always felt that there must be some important conflict, some large out of equilibrium process, that drives philosophical development. In the past that important conflict was often major wars that were quite traumatic like the Civil War or World War I. The driving conflict could also be glaring inconsistencies in the social-cultural assumptions. This driving conflict leads the social-cultural realm to be out of equilibrium enough, over a long enough period, so it can cause major thought change. For the new age I could not, at first, find such a traumatic conflict, at least directly visible, such as in a war. What I have finally concluded is that the conflict of the new age is not any particular war but the fear of the war to end all wars. The new age has been driven by the out of equilibrium fear of the nuclear apocalypse. Thus the need for a new meta-physic. So they needed to go elsewhere to seek out sources of knowledge. The standard sources seem to only know the old physical world (at least the learned sources appeared to only want to know the old physical world) which is definitely passing away in a horrible nuclear way. The physical apocalypse that the new agers saw was far worse than anything in the Apocalypse of John. Remember, although we all knew about this problem we were not able to talk about it generally. It was too horrible. So it remains the subconscious assumption behind our thoughts and our own philosophical development. It is obvious that this driving force would engender more interest in another reality, a reality that could not be affected by the final nuclear event. The social-cultural realm was far from equilibrium, in a hidden way, and thus we were driven to seek new approaches to resolving our inner conflict. The new age had to happen and it had to question the meta-physics. Dr. Jerome Heath, Ph. D.

Book Synopsis The Universe Traveler by : Las Lugosi
Download or read book The Universe Traveler written by Las Lugosi and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Universe Traveler is a collection of loosely related short stories, revolving around a common theme - humanist secularism. The stories celebrate scientific knowledge, rally against organized religion and recount memories of the author living under an oppressive regime as a kid. Some express a desire to see more people reach for the stars in an effort to shake off the cloak of ignorance once and for all that is holding humanity back from reaching its full potential. These stories are to be read and understood from the point of view that human beings, curious by nature, are to continue the exploration they started millions of years ago, wondering off the plains of Africa in search of a better life, culminating in the conquest of space. After all, every atom in the human body was once born inside the nuclear furnace of giant stars - it is only fitting, that our journey leads us back to the same space from where once we came.

Book Synopsis Your Place in the Universe by : Paul M. Sutter
Download or read book Your Place in the Universe written by Paul M. Sutter and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An astrophysicist presents an in-depth yet accessible tour of the universe for lay readers, while conveying the excitement of astronomy. How is a galaxy billions of lightyears away connected to us? Is our home nothing more than a tiny speck of blue in an ocean of night? In this exciting tour of a universe far larger than we can imagine, cosmologist Paul M. Sutter emphasizes how amazing it is that we are part of such a huge, complex, and mysterious place. Through metaphors and uncomplicated language, Sutter breathes life into the science of astrophysics, unveiling how particles, forces, and fields interplay to create the greatest of cosmic dramas. Touched with the author's characteristic breezy, conversational style--which has made him a breakout hit on venues such as The Weather Channel, the Science Channel, and his own popular Ask a Spaceman! podcast--he conveys the fun and wonder of delving deeply into the physical processes of the natural universe. He weaves together the past and future histories of our universe with grounded descriptions of essential modern-day physics as well as speculations based on the latest research in cosmology. Topics include our place in the Milky Way galaxy; the cosmic web--a vast web-like pattern in which galaxies are arranged; the origins of our universe in the big bang; the mysteries of dark matter and dark energy; how science has dramatically changed our relationship to the cosmos; conjectures about the future of reality as we know it; and more. For anyone who has ever stared at the starry night sky and wondered how we humans on Earth fit into the big picture, this book is an essential roadmap.
Book Synopsis Measuring the Universe by : Kitty Ferguson
Download or read book Measuring the Universe written by Kitty Ferguson and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-01-31 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suppose you and I still wondered whether all of the pinpoints of light in the night sky are the same distance from us. Suppose none of our contemporaries could tell us whether the Sun orbits the Earth, or vice versa, or even how large the Earth is. Suppose no one had guessed there are mathematical laws underlying the motions of the heavens. How would - how did - anyone begin to discover these numbers and these relationships without leaving the Earth? What made anyone even think it was possible to find out “how far,” without going there? In Measuring the Universe we join our ancestors and contemporary scientists as they tease this information out of a sky full of stars. Some of the questions have turned out to be loaded, and a great deal besides mathematics and astronomy has gone into answering them. Politics, religion, philosophy and personal ambition: all have played roles in this drama. There are poignant personal stories, of people like Copernicus, Kepler, Newton, Herschel, and Hubble. Today scientists are attempting to determine the distance to objects near the borders of the observable universe, far beyond anything that can be seen with the naked eye in the night sky, and to measure time back to its origin. The numbers are too enormous to comprehend. Nevertheless, generations of curious people have figured them out, one resourceful step at a time. Progress has owed as much to raw ingenuity as to technology, and frontier inventiveness is still not out of date.
