Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Paragraph It is just at this point of paragraph structure that Miss Thomas's little book will prove a valuable supplement to the excellent texts already in use. It is not intended to supplant them, but to be used in conjunction with them. It is the embodiment of an original idea, startling at first in its very simplicity, but eminently logical, sane, and prae tical. Miss Thomas has found the method by which great masters of the language, perhaps unconsciously, have wrought the fabric of their thought, and by this book makes it feasible to teach that method to pupils in secondary schools. It is so easily to be understood by teacher and pupil alike as to make it valuable for school use. Its Clearness of arrangement, logical development step by step, number and variety of exercises, and, most of all, its interest to the pupil, will serve to make it popular among teachers of Eng lish. The method proposed is the outcome of experience in teaching, and has already been used with enthusiasm in several schools, by a number of instructors, all of whom are enthusiastic in commending it as the most practical means of teaching the development of the paragraph. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reveries of a Schoolmaster When I am taking a stroll in the woods, as I delight to do in the autumn-time, laundering my soul with the gorgeous colors, the music of the rustling leaves, the majestic silences, and the sounds that are less and more than sounds, I often wonder, when I take one bypath, what experiences I might have had if I had taken the other. I'll never know, of course, but I keep on wondering. So it is with this Latin. I won der how much worse matters could or would have been if I had never studied it at all. As the old man said to the young fellow who consulted him as to getting married: You'll be sorry if you do, and sorry if you don't. I used to feel a sort of pity for my pupils to think how they would have had no education at all if they had not had me as their teacher; now I am beginning to wonder how much further along they might have been if they had had some other teacher. But probably most of the misfits in life are in the imagination, after all. We all think the huckleberries are more abundant on the other bush. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhymes, Reveries, and Reminiscences There is a period in the life of every man (i mean the period when the passions are strongest), when the minutiae of life are forgotten, or, at least, but slightly remembered, as if Nature kindly drew a veil over our dawning manhood, in order to Spare us the blush for many an impropriety and inconsistency we are then guilty of. Not so with the years of our childhood, every item there leaves an indelible impression, which time cannot erase, as every remarkable circumstance, at that time, of itself marks'an era. Book excerpt: "Nineteen Eighty-Four: A Novel", often published as "1984", is a dystopian social science fiction novel by English novelist George Orwell. It was published on 8 June 1949 by Secker & Warburg as Orwell's ninth and final book completed in his lifetime. Thematically, "Nineteen Eighty-Four" centres on the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of persons and behaviours within society. Orwell, himself a democratic socialist, modelled the authoritarian government in the novel after Stalinist Russia. More broadly, the novel examines the role of truth and facts within politics and the ways in which they are manipulated. The story takes place in an imagined future, the year 1984, when much of the world has fallen victim to perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance, historical negationism, and propaganda. Great Britain, known as Airstrip One, has become a province of a totalitarian superstate named Oceania that is ruled by the Party who employ the Thought Police to persecute individuality and independent thinking. Big Brother, the leader of the Party, enjoys an intense cult of personality despite the fact that he may not even exist. The protagonist, Winston Smith, is a diligent and skillful rank-and-file worker and Outer Party member who secretly hates the Party and dreams of rebellion. He enters into a forbidden relationship with a colleague, Julia, and starts to remember what life was like before the Party came to power.

Journeying across Britain, through spectacular failures, magical successes and epiphanies, Cocker uncovers the mysteries of these birds' inner lives. SHORTLISTED FOR THE 2008 SAMUEL JOHNSON PRIZE

A first novel by an unknown writer, it remained on the bestseller list for sixteen weeks, won the National Book Award for fiction, and established Ralph Ellison as one of the key writers of the century. The nameless narrator of the novel describes growing up in a black community in the South, attending a Negro college from which he is expelled, moving to New York and becoming the chief spokesman of the Harlem branch of "the Brotherhood", and retreating amid violence and confusion to the basement lair of the Invisible Man he imagines himself to be. The book is a passionate and witty tour de force of style, strongly influenced by T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Joyce, and Dostoevsky.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a truth universally established that Jane Austen knew neither Latin nor Greek. As a literary detective, Mary Margolies DeForest disputes this. In Austen's day, classically educated women were loathed. Austen wanted readers to know that she and her best characters had a classical education--just not in her lifetime! Unlike writers who paraded their educational credentials, Austen did not send modern readers diving into footnotes to translate a chunk of Greek or Latin. Instead, she revealed a classical education subtly but profoundly. As DeForest argues, a classical education shapes Austen's characters, their language, and their stories.

Book excerpt: The idea of this women's magazine originated with Samuel Williams, a Cincinnati Methodist, who thought that Christian women needed a magazine less worldly than Godey's Lady's Book and Snowden's Lady's Companion. Written largely by ministers, this exceptionally well-printed little magazine contained well-written essays of a moral character, plenty of poetry, articles on historical and scientific matters, and book reviews. Among western writers were Alice Cary, who contributed over a hundred sketches and poems, her sister Phoebe Cary, Otway Curry, Moncure D. Conway, and Joshua R. Giddings; and New England contributors included Mrs. Lydia Sigourney, Hannah F. Gould, and Julia C.R Dorr. By 1851, each issue published a peice of music and two steel plates, usually landscapes or portraits. When Davis E. Clark took over the editorship in 1853, the magazine became brighter and attained a circulation of 40,000. Unlike his predecessors, Clark included fictional pieces and made the Repository a magazine for the whole family. After the war it began to decline and in 1876 was replaced by the National Repository. The Ladies' Repository was an excellent representative of the Methodist mind and heart. Its essays, sketches, and poems, its good steel engravings, and its moral tone gave it a charm all its own. -- Cf. American periodicals, 1741-1900.
