Download or read book O'Donovan Rossa's Prison Life written by Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa and published by . This book was released on 1874 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeremiah O'Donovan Rossa (1831-1915) was an Irish Fenian leader. In 1865, he was charged with plotting a Fenian uprising, put on trial for high treason and sentenced to penal servitude for life. He served his time in Pentonville, Portland, and Chatham prisons, among others. He was finally released on the understanding that he would not return to Ireland and moved to the United States in 1870. His tale of famine, leek porridge, tight irons, taking an airing in the exercise yard, and working in the quarries is a disturbing portrayal of another age, regardless of one's political point of view. Press opinions at rear, along with advertising for the author's own hotel.

Book Synopsis Victorian Prison Lives by : Philip Priestley
Download or read book Victorian Prison Lives written by Philip Priestley and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-03-31 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victorian Prison Lives is the first account of the process of imprisionment in England between 1830 and 1914 to be drawn largely from the writings of prisoners themselves. The period was in some ways one of great change, beginning with an astonishing penitentiary experiement when prisons were seen as moral hospitals. But this approach eventually gave way to the idea of penal servitude and created a legacy of harshness and suffering still preserved in the reputations of Portland Chatham and Dartmoor. It was only towards the end of the period that the concept of modern prison administration began to emerge. But while statutary changes where taking place there was an underlying continuity. This is examined in a series of chapters on every aspect of prison life - from admission procedure, fellow prisoners and the nature of hard labour, diet and discipline to the process of release, which for a long-term prisioner could be as daunting as entry into prison.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revelations of Prison Life, Vol. 1 of 2: With an Enquiry Into Prison Discipline and Secondary Punishments Here I am bound in conscience to exclude from censure the County of Middlesex, where no unwise economy, or lack of foresight, have crippled the efficiency of the prisons or lunatic asylums. Would that all counties would compare with it but still, if a new organization should be deemed a universal desideratum, as I honestly contend is the case, one board must be created to take cognizance of the entire administration. Book Synopsis Victims of Nazi Persecution in the Channel Islands by : Gilly Carr
Download or read book Victims of Nazi Persecution in the Channel Islands written by Gilly Carr and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Victims of Nazi Persecution from the Channel Islands explores the fight and claims for recognition and legitimacy of those from the only part of the British Isles to be occupied during the Second World War. The struggle to have resistance recognised by the local governments of the islands as a legitimate course of action during the occupation is something that still continues today. Drawing on 100 compensation testimonies written in the 1960s and newly discovered archival material, Gilly Carr sheds light on the experiences of British civilians from the Channel Islands in Nazi prisons and concentration camps. She analyses the Foreign Office's treatment of claims from Islanders and explores why the islands' local governments declined to help former political prisoners fight for compensation. Finally, the book asks why 'perceived sensitivities' have stood in the way of honouring former political prisoners and resistance memory over the last 70 years in the Channel Islands. The testimonies explored within this volume help to place the Channel Islands back within European discourse on the Holocaust and the Second World War; as such, it will be of great importance to scholars interested in Nazi occupation, persecution and post-war memory both in Britain and Europe more widely.
