May He rule our thoughts aspiring to His Sacred Heart." "God of the granite and the rose! Soul of the sparrow and the bee! The mighty tide of being flows Through countless channels. Lord, from Thee. It leaps to life in grass and flowers; Through every grade of Being runs, Till from Creation's radiant towers Its glory flames in Stars and Suns." Lord, I would ever praise Thee, for all Thy love can give, But most of all, O Father, I thank Thee that I live." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compend of Christian Divinity In the preparation of this work for the public, we are governed by a desire for the promotion of Christian knowledge and virtue. Though all knowledge is important in its place, and there are discoveries of sublime moral and scientific truths, from a study of the nature and fitness of things, yet nothing has such power to enlarge, elevate, purify and bless the human mind, as the knowledge and love of revealed religion. This work is a desideratum in the Universalist public. We have many able Theological productions; but they are devoted respectively to some particular point or points of the general system of Christian doctrines, no one book comprising a complete compend or body of divinity. We often meet with inquirers after truth, who ask our reference to a book, from which they can obtain a knowledge of our views of Christianity as a whole, embracing all its essential principles. To such a book we have not been able to refer them. The different writers have accomplished their respective designs; but no one, of whom we know, has grasped so extensive a plan. This is the plan undertaken by the writer of the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: An intimate and candid examination of the changing nature of belief and where it can lead us--from the life experience of one of Judaism's leading thinkers. For over five decades, Rabbi Neil Gillman has helped people think through the most challenging questions at the heart of being a believing religious person. In this intimate rethinking of his own theological journey he explores the changing nature of belief and the complexities of reconciling the intellectual, emotional and moral questions of his own searching mind and soul. If what we have in recognizing, speaking of and experiencing God is a wide-ranging treasury of humanly crafted metaphors, what, then, is the ultimate reality, the ultimate nature of God? What lies beyond the metaphors? If humanity was an active partner in revelation--if the human community participated in what was revealed and gave it meaning--what then should be the authority of Jewish law? How do we cope--intellectually, emotionally and morally--with suffering, the greatest challenge to our faith commitment, relationship with God and sense of a fundamentally ordered world? Death is inevitable but why is it built in as part of the total life experience?

Book excerpt: Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion is a philosophical work written by the Scottish philosopher David Hume. Through dialogue, three fictional characters named Demea, Philo, and Cleanthes debate the nature of God's existence. While all three agree that a god exists, they differ sharply in opinion on God's nature or attributes and how, or if, humankind can come to knowledge of a deity. In the Dialogues, Hume's characters debate a number of arguments for the existence of God, and arguments whose proponents believe through which we may come to know the nature of God. Such topics debated include the argument from design - for which Hume uses a house - and whether there is more suffering or good in the world (Argument from evil)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question isn¿t whether grace¿ God¿s love freely given¿is there for you in Judaism. The question is, do you have the courage to accept it? Ask almost any Jew whether grace is a central concept in Judaism and an essential element in living Jewishly, and, chances are, their answer will be ¿no.¿ But that¿s the wrong answer. This fascinating foray into God¿s love freely given offers the reader a way to answer that question in the affirmative. Drawing from ancient and contemporary, traditional and non-traditional Jewish wisdom, this book reclaims the idea of grace in Judaism in three ways: ¿ It offers a view of God that helps the reader understand what grace is, why grace is, and how grace manifests in the world. ¿ It sets forth a reading of Judaism that is grace-filled: an understanding of creation, Shabbat and other Jewish practices from a grace-filled perspective. ¿ It challenges the reader to be embraced and transformed by grace, and to live life as a vehicle for God¿s grace, thereby fulfilling the promise of being created in God¿s image and likeness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive, inspiring and fascinating discovery of what Jews believe about the Messiah--and why you might believe in the Messiah, too. "The conviction that the Messiah is coming is a promise of meaning. It is a source of consolation. It is a wellspring of creativity. It is a reconciliation between what is and what should be. And it is perhaps our most powerful statement of faith--in God, in humanity and in ourselves." --from Chapter 1, "The Messiah Is Coming " The coming of the Messiah--the promise of redemption--is among Judaism's gifts to the world. But it is a gift about which the world knows so little. It has been overshadowed by Christian belief and teaching, and as a result its Jewish significance has been all but lost. To further complicate matters, Jewish messianic teaching is enthralling, compelling, challenging, exhilarating--yet, up until now, woefully inaccessible. This book will change that. Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman brings together, and to life, this three-thousand-year-old tradition as never before. Rather than simply reviewing the vast body of Jewish messianic literature, she explores an astonishing range of primary and secondary sources, explaining in an informative yet inspirational way these teachings' significance for Jews of the past--and infuses them with new meaning for the modern reader, both Jewish and non-Jewish.
