Book excerpt: Excerpt from Further Studies in Retroactive Inhibition However, a control series of experiments was done, largely to meet the above objections. The reconstruction test was used as before. The exposure time was fifteen seconds. The work con sisted in adding two columns of figures simultaneously. The total time elapsing between learning and reconstruction was three minutes. In one case the subject rested for three minutes. In the other case the subject worked immediately for one minute and then rested the last two minutes. This experiment should largely do away with the above objections. Four subjects did the experiments, the order of presentation being irregular in all cases. The averages are given in Table VI. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life scientists have long been familiar with the notion of interference and inhibition in biological systems 3/4 most notably in the neuron. Now these concepts have been applied to cognitive psychology to explain processes in attention, learning, memory, comprehension, and reasoning. Presenting an overview of research findings in this realm, Interference and Inhibition in Cognition discusses what processes are sensitive to interference, individual differences in interference sensitivity, and how age and experience factor into one's ability to inhibit interference. Provides empirical and theoretical perspectives Discusses how inhibition and interference change with age and experience Illustrates the ways in which interference affects language processing, attention, perception, learning, and memory

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this landmark volume from 1976, Robert Crowder presents an organized review of the concepts that guide the study of learning and memory. The basic organization of the book is theoretical, rather than historical or methodological, and there are four broad sections. The first is on coding in memory, and the relations between memory and vision, audition and speech. The second section focuses on short-term memory. The third is loosely organized around the topic of learning. The final section includes chapters that focus on the process of retrieval, with special attention to recognition and to serial organization. Crowder presumes no prior knowledge of the subject matter on the part of the reader; technical terms are kept to a minimum, and he makes every effort to introduce them carefully when they first occur. It is suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive Learning and the Human Condition presents the basic principles of classical (Pavlovian) and instrumental (Skinnerian) conditioning in a more coherent and expansive manner than is the case in other textbooks. Learning is defined as an adaptive process through which individuals acquire the ability to predict, and where possible, control the environment. This overarching definition enables integration of traditional Pavlovian and Skinnerian principles and terminology and makes explicit why treatment of the learning process is essentially limited to these two historical research paradigms. Pavlov developed a methodology for studying animals under circumstances where they could predict, but not control, sequences of environmental events. Skinner studied animals under circumstances where their behavior had an effect upon environmental events. Observational learning and symbolic communication (i.e., spoken or written language) are incorporated as indirect learning processes through which individuals can acquire the ability to predict or control. This treatment creates a perspective within which it is possible to consider the fundamental nature of the learning process in understanding the human condition and in addressing significant individual and social concerns. Examples of applications and issues not included in similar textbooks include: The role of classical and instrumental conditioning in language acquisition The administration of rewards and punishers in Baumrind’s parental styles as related to Kohlberg’s stages of moral development Stone-Age hunter-gatherer and technologically-advanced cultures: How did we get from there to here? Self-control and self-actualization While covering traditional technical and theoretical issues, the book is written in a clear, engaging style. The narrative builds across chapters, culminating in the treatment of applications and societal concerns of import and interest to students and faculty alike. Upon completing this book, readers should be able to: explain the significance of human condition through adaptive learning; present the basic principles of classical and instrumental conditioning; and understand the significance of scientific research

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, based on the Flowerree Mardi Gras Symposium at Tulane University, juxtaposes contemporary research and theory from several areas of animal learning -- learning theory, comparative cognition, animal models of human behavior, and functional neurology. Investigators pursuing these different routes often work in isolation of progress being made in, what should be, related fields. This book will acquaint students and researchers with a variety of topics, ordinarily treated separately, in a way that will stimulate integrative thinking. Cognitive interpretations of animal learning are included, as well as recent developments in conditioning theory, physiological bases of learning, animal models of human behavior problems, and psychopharmacology.
