Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fourth edition, completely updated in 2014, is brimming with sound and thoughtful advice on retirement in Mexico. Everything from how to pick your location to the new residency procedure that became effective in November, 2013, is covered. If you've ever considered retirement in Mexico, please read this book first. It has the most up-to-date information that would otherwise take you months of frustration to acquire. But why Mexico? The reasons are many. Often, Americans and Canadians choose Mexico because of its proximity. Unlike most other exotic retirement locations that require lengthy plane trips, it's easy to drive back and forth to Mexico. A more important reason is that Mexico is a bargain compared to the rest of North America and Europe. Expatriates live very well, often more luxuriously than they did “back home,” on very little money. Housing is half what it costs in the States; excellent medical and dental care is startlingly inexpensive; and the government will even provide health insurance for less than $500 a year! Then, too, Mexico is rich in archaeological sites, steeped in history, and has a more exciting “foreign” culture than any place in Western Europe. There is also no denying that its delicious cuisine, stunning architecture, colonial cities, and temperate climate also play a part in people's decision. Dru isn't implying that Mexico is Shangri-La, but she thinks it is closer to paradise than any place you can find in the United States, Canada or Europe. Here in this land of majestic mountains and rolling countryside, a gentle people are willing to welcome retirees into their hearts. Expats have more time to explore other interests and develop talents because they have more freedom, better health, less stress, and fewer mundane chores. The low cost of living allows them to splurge on luxuries that would be prohibitive anywhere else and to take advantage of world-class resorts that are only a few hours´ drive away. No, the country isn't perfect, but you cannot get any closer to paradise than Mexico.

Book excerpt: There are tens of millions of people at, or approaching, retirement age. With the economic conditions in the United States, combined with the high cost of living in both Canada and the US, more and more people are looking at other countries in which to spend their golden years and make their hard earned dollars stretch further. A very popular choice is Mexico. The weather, the mountains and beaches, the lower cost of living, and the proximity to the US make it a natural for this country to be seriously considered. So, what makes this book different? Unlike everything we have read, or seen, on Mexico previously, it takes a good hard look at what life in this country is really like and what we have personally experienced in our seven years since retiring. While other authors talk about Mexico being nothing short of The Garden of Eden, I have not sugar coated anything. Mexico is anything but the Garden of Eden or paradise. It can be a fantastic place in which to live or retire, but it can also be your worst nightmare if you are not made aware of the problems that exist here as well. Too many people have moved down, basing their decision on what they have read in books, not having friends or relatives here that can hopefully give them actual facts, and had their retirement dreams completely shattered. I want to try and prevent this from happening to you. This book is divided into six sections. The first talks about how I first found out about the Lake Chapala area, a day by day account of Sarah and I first visiting here, buying a house, and everything we did and went through until we closed on our new home. It is important as many people, like us, come down and think it is such a wonderful place and full of wonderful people and find out afterwards that may not be the case. Section 2 covers the time period between closing on our home and actually moving here. It goes over getting our visas and what was required, the drive from the border to San Juan Cosala, remodeling our home, and our first introduction to the lack of consumer protection in this country. Section 3 goes over our lives in Mexico as we first found it. Living here was certainly different than in the United States and was really good. It was not until later that we started discovering another side of Mexican life. Section 4 is entitled The Good. There are a lot of terrific things about living in Mexico. It is what we ourselves have found to be the attributes of this country and why so many have, and are continuing to, retire here. Section 5, I have called The Bad. No matter where one lives, there is always the good about an area and there are always some things to complain about. If you have never lived in a foreign country, this is an important section as it discusses a lot of different aspects of life, costs that people are often not aware of until after they have moved, and a lot of pertinent facts that could impact your decision to move to Mexico, or your lives after you get here. One thing you will find of importance is a very realistic look at the monthly expenditures and not the ones that leave so many items out to deceive you. Section 6, The Ugly, is one you should pay particular attention to. It is probably the main reason for writing this book as you need to be aware of what not only happened to my wife and I but to so many of the other Americans and Canadians that live here. This is a country of crime and corruption and foreigners are the targets of choice. This section covers most of the things you should definitely know about because, without it, you can easily lose a few pesos to your entire life savings. Its intent is to safeguard your money so you can truly enjoy your retirement years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Year in Provence meets Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House in this lively and entertaining account of a couple's year building their dream house in Mexico. In 2004, Barry Golson wrote an award-winning article for AARP magazine about Mexican hot spots for retirees longing for a lifestyle they couldn't afford in the United States. A year later, he and his wife Thia were taking part in the growing trend of retiring abroad. They sold their Manhattan apartment, packed up their SUV, and moved to one of those idyllic hot spots, the surfing and fishing village of Sayulita on Mexico's Pacific coast. With humor and charm, Golson details the year he and his wife spent settling into their new life and planning and building their dream home. Sayulita -- population 1,500, not including stray dogs or pelicans -- is a never-dull mixture of traditional Mexican customs and new, gringo-influenced change. Before long, the Golsons had been absorbed into the rhythms and routines of village life: they adopted a pair of iguanas named Iggy Pop and Iggy Mom, got sick and got cured by a doctor who charged them sixteen dollars a visit, made lasting friends with Mexicans and fellow expatriates, and discovered the skill and artistry of local craftsmen. But their daily lives were mostly dedicated to the difficult yet satisfying process of building their house. It took them almost six months to begin building -- nothing is simple (or speedy) in Mexico -- and incredibly, they completed construction in another six. They engaged a Mexican architect, builder, and landscape designer who not only built their home but also changed their lives; encountered uproariously odd bureaucracy; and ultimately experienced a lifetime's worth of education about the challenges and advantages of living in Mexico. The Golsons lived (and are still living) the dream of many -- not only of going off to a tropical paradise but also of building something beautiful, becoming a part of a new world, making lasting friends, and transforming their lives. As much about family and friendship as about house-building, Gringos in Paradise is an immensely readable and illuminating book about finding a personal paradise and making it a home.

Book excerpt: Retire to Adventure!, first published in 1962, is the lively account by Harrison and Shirley Karr of their travels in the 1950s across Canada, the United States, and Mexico. Traveling first by an early model of teardrop trailer, then a larger Airstream, the author recounts their experiences with the aim of helping others achieve a satisfying retirement, rich in experiences and memories. Illustrated with 16 pages of photographs. From the Foreword: "Since I retired in 1954 my wife Shirley and I have spent a major part of the time traveling the highways and byways of the United States, Canada, and Mexico in a travel trailer. Always we have been searching for adventure - adventure suitable to our years and physical capacities. Other adventurers no doubt have faced greater hardships and dangers, and have performed more feats of daring. But not one of them, I feel sure, has derived more downright fun from searching for and finding lively adventure. The following pages recount some of the outstanding events in our eight years of carefree wandering. If this book succeeds in making some small contribution to the literature on adventure, the contribution will be this: it suggests a mode of adventuring that is available to almost any retired person of reasonably good health and a modicum of financial independence."

Book excerpt: If you've ever dreamed of casting off your worldly possessions and traveling to your heart's content, this story about two intrepid seniors will inspire you no matter your age. Michael and Debbie Campbell felt they had one more adventure in them before considering retirement in the traditional sense, so they filled two rolling duffel bags with life's essentials (including their own pillows) and hit the road. Three years later, having sold their home in Seattle, their "Senior Nomad" lifestyle has no end in sight. Ride along as they share tales of living full-time in Airbnbs in over 50 countries and pay tribute to the many hosts who not only helped them live daily life, but also offered unique opportunities to experience their cities. From the barber's chair in Dublin and the dentist's chair in Split, to a wild motorcycle ride in Athens, a peek behind the Soviet Curtain in Transnistria, and the demise of a chicken for dinner in Marrakech, hosts made the Campbell's dream of adventure come true. Discover how Debbie and Michael find their next Airbnb, how they get there, and the many ways they enjoy their new city just as the locals do. Learn their tips and tricks for using Airbnb and how they get the most out of each stay, all while spending little more than they would have spent settled into their rocking chairs in Seattle.
