Book excerpt: A good quality of life during the retirement years is a goal shared by most if not all people. In this study, the researcher examined the quality of life through the indicators of health income, marital status, family roles, education and living conditions. This research explored the effect that retirement has on a retiree's quality of life. The study examined the quality of life experienced by "early" retirees and "regular age" retirees. This research utilized a purposive convenience sample of seven "early" retirees and seven "regular age" retirees. The retiree participants in this study include two racial backgrounds; black and white, males and females, 55 years of age or older. Fourteen in-depth face-to-face interviews of the participants were conducted. Their responses were recorded, analyzed, and compiled. The quality of life among each participant interviewed was evaluated on activities, freedom to pursue personal interest and health, etcetera. At the time of this study, the respondents had been retired, regardless of age at retirement, from one to thirteen years. Most had been retired for over five years. Sixty-eight percent (68%) of the respondents returned to work after retirement. -- Abstract.

Book excerpt: The research objectives are three-fold: firstly, to study the existing social security and its new pension scheme for government and enterprise employees; secondly to study the relationship of variables of the retirees’ personal qualifications on the quality of life between the government and enterprise employees; and thirdly to inquire into the suggestions for improving the new pension scheme for a better quality of life for government and enterprise employees. Mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative) are employed to collect the data. The 400 government and enterprise employees in Nanning city were the sample of the quantitative research. For the qualitative research, 3 policy directors from the Department of Human Resources and Social Security of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and two people from different sub-bureaus, as well as 3 directors of the salary sector from different enterprises in Nanning city, were interviewed. Six case studies were conducted. The result of research reveals that there is no difference in the quality of life overall between government-retried employees and enterprise-retried employees. However, there are differences in some respects, i.e. financial situation, spiritual achievement, freedom and life control, social relationships, responsibility for family, living in good surroundings.
Book Synopsis The Role of Retiree Health Insurance in the Early Retirement of Public Sector Employees by : John B. Shoven

This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most private sector workers with employer-provided health insurance have a strong incentive to continue working until Medicare eligibility in order to maintain group health coverage. However, most government employees have access to retiree health coverage, which allows them access to group health coverage even if they retire before Medicare eligibility. We study the impact of retiree health coverage on the probability of stopping work among public sector workers between the ages of 55 and 64. We find that, for state and local government employees, retiree health coverage raises the probability of stopping work by 5.1 percentage points (around 28 percent) between ages 60 and 64. However, we find no evidence that retiree health coverage influences state and local employees' decisions to stop work at ages 55-59, or that such coverage has an effect on the probability of stopping work for federal and military employees.

Using a panel data set of public sector workers from 12 waves of the Health and Retirement Study, I model the probability of retirement as a function of pension wealth at early and normal retirement eligibility and Social Security coverage in the public sector job. I find that becoming eligible for early retirement, or receiving an early-out offer, significantly increases the probability of retiring. I do not find any effect of retirement wealth levels; instead the findings are consistent with the literature on default options in defined contribution plans. These findings suggest that state legislative action to affect retirement decisions and reduce future pension costs may be most effective operating through plan eligibility rules and early-out incentives.

Book Synopsis Aging and the Macroeconomy by : National Research Council
Download or read book Aging and the Macroeconomy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. In the coming decades, people aged 65 and over will make up an increasingly large percentage of the population: The ratio of people aged 65+ to people aged 20-64 will rise by 80%. This shift is happening for two reasons: people are living longer, and many couples are choosing to have fewer children and to have those children somewhat later in life. The resulting demographic shift will present the nation with economic challenges, both to absorb the costs and to leverage the benefits of an aging population. Aging and the Macroeconomy: Long-Term Implications of an Older Population presents the fundamental factors driving the aging of the U.S. population, as well as its societal implications and likely long-term macroeconomic effects in a global context. The report finds that, while population aging does not pose an insurmountable challenge to the nation, it is imperative that sensible policies are implemented soon to allow companies and households to respond. It offers four practical approaches for preparing resources to support the future consumption of households and for adapting to the new economic landscape.
Book Synopsis Bridge Employment by : Carlos-María Alcover
Download or read book Bridge Employment written by Carlos-María Alcover and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the long-term trend toward earlier retirement slowing, and the majority of older workers remaining in employment up to and beyond statutory retirement age, it is increasingly important that we understand how to react to these changes. Bridge employment patterns and activities have changed greatly over the past decade, yet there is little information about the benefits of the various different forms this can take, both for employees and employers. This comparative international collection provides the first comprehensive summary of the literature on bridge employment, bringing together experiences from Europe, the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan. It identifies the opportunities, barriers and gaps in knowledge and practice, whilst offering recommendations on how organisations and individuals can cope with future challenges in aging and work. Written by international experts in the field, each chapter also makes substantive and contextualized suggestions for public policy and organizational decision-makers, providing them with a roadmap to implement and integrate bridge employment into policies and practices designed to prolong working life - a priority for workers, organizations and societies in the coming decades. This unique research handbook will be useful to a wide range of readers with an interest in the new concept of bridge employment and the extension of working life, and of interest to researchers and practitioners in organizational behavior, labor market analysis, human resource management, career development/counselling, occupational health, social economy and public policy administration

Book excerpt: The aging of baby boomers, along with the predicted decrease of the available labor pool, will place increased scrutiny and emphasis on issues relating to an aging workforce. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first of the nation's 78 million baby boomers begin reaching age 65 in 2011, they will face a health care workforce that is too small and woefully unprepared to meet their specific health needs. Retooling for an Aging America calls for bold initiatives starting immediately to train all health care providers in the basics of geriatric care and to prepare family members and other informal caregivers, who currently receive little or no training in how to tend to their aging loved ones. The book also recommends that Medicare, Medicaid, and other health plans pay higher rates to boost recruitment and retention of geriatric specialists and care aides. Educators and health professional groups can use Retooling for an Aging America to institute or increase formal education and training in geriatrics. Consumer groups can use the book to advocate for improving the care for older adults. Health care professional and occupational groups can use it to improve the quality of health care jobs.
