Book excerpt: This is a traditio-historical study of three ideas concerning the eschatological resurrection which Paul brings forward in 1 Corinthians 15:20-23: (a) Jesus' resurrection forms the beginning of the eschatological resurrection; (b) the eschatological resurrection will take place through participation in Jesus' resurrection; (c) the eschatological resurrection will take place at the time of Jesus' parousia. The three ideas are investigated in the following way. Firstly, their occurrence and function in Paul is set out, subsequently their origin is reconstructed, and, finally, analogous Jewish concepts are compared. A critical review of earlier research on these ideas and a literary and historical exegesis of the relevant sections of 1 Corinthians 15 precede the investigations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The delay of the Parousia—the second coming of Christ—has vexed Christians since the final decades of the first century. This volume offers a critical, constructive, and interdisciplinary solution to that dilemma. The argument is grounded in Christian tradition while remaining fully engaged with the critical insights and methodological approaches of twenty-first-century scholars. The authors argue that the deferral of Christ’s prophesied return follows logically from the conditional nature of ancient predictive prophecy: Jesus has not come again because God’s people have not yet responded sufficiently to Christ’s call for holy and godly action. God, in patient mercy, remains committed to cooperating with humans to bring about the consummation of history with Jesus’ return. Collaboratively written by an interdisciplinary and ecumenical team of scholars, the argument draws on expertise in biblical studies, systematics, and historical theology to fuse critical biblical exegesis with a powerful theological paradigm that generates an apophatic and constructive Christian eschatology. The authors, however, have done more than tackle a daunting theological problem: as the group traverses issues from higher criticism through doctrine and into liturgy and ethics, they present an innovative approach for how to do Christian theology in the twenty-first-century academy.

Book excerpt: Participant Workbook Revised and reformatted! Genesis to Jesus opens the door to deeper understanding of Scripture for all Catholics, especially those who find reading the Bible a daunting task. The book leads the reader on an overview of salvation history in order to give the "big picture," the single plot that runs through the books of the Bible. What is that overarching story? God's plan to bring all humanity into his covenant family. This overview of key covenants from creation to the New Covenant established by Jesus not only helps the reader see how various biblical stories fit together in God's plan, it also provides a foundation for ongoing Bible study. Genesis to Jesus is the first in a series of study guides produced by The St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology, based in Steubenville, Ohio. The Center, founded in 2000, develops materials to help Catholics deepen their faith through Scripture study. KIMBERLY HAHN is the author of Life-Giving Love: Embracing God's Beautiful Design for Marriage, the Life-Nurturing Love series published by Servant Books, and coauthor, with her husband Scott Hahn, of Rome, Sweet Rome: Our Journey to Catholicism. DR. SCOTT HAHN teaches theology at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio. He is the author of A Father Who Keeps His Promises: God's Covenant Love in Scripture and many other books. They are the parents of six children.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parousia: A Critical Study of the Scripture Doctrines of Christ's Second Coming, His Reign as King; The Resurrection of the Dead; And the General Judgemet It is with the utmost diffidence that I give this book to the public. The peculiar nature of the subject, the wide diversity of opinions concerning it among Christians, and the oft-expressed sentiment that any one who pretends to much confidence as to what the Scriptures design to teach us in relation to it betrays a lack of mental sobriety, if not of sanity, might well deter men of far greater professional ability than myself from anything so rash. But having, after many years of study begun under the most painful perplexities, attained certain views of the subject which afford groat satisfaction to my own mind, I cannot resist the feeling that others similarly perplexed may possibly be equally relieved by a statement of those views and the grounds on which they are based. That feeling has been much strengthened by the favor with which some articles on the Parousia published a year or two ago in the Christian Mirror were received, and the very frequent requests since made that they might be printed in a more permanent form. I am not vain enough to expect that all, perhaps not even many, will accept the views here set forth. Some will reject them outright, without investigation. Many others will stand in doubt, or more actively oppose them, because in a few respects - matters of form and costume chiefly - they differ somewhat from the more commonly accepted views. Still, I venture to crave a candid hearing from all, and an unprejudiced comparison of the positions taken with the Scriptures, "whether these things are so." And if there be a seeming of presumption in venturing to publish any views on such a subject, let this be my apology, that God has taken many ages and used many builders in rearing up the edifice of Christian truth, and though all may not be master builders, yet each one, even the humblest, may bring his brick, which the great Proprietor will find a place for. One or two remarks I maybe permitted to make as to the principles of Interpretation which have guided me in this inquiry. The first is to have primary regard to the ideas and modes of speaking current among the Jews in Christ's day. Says Prof. Stuart, in his Letters to Channing, "Nothing is clearer to my apprehension than that God, when he speaks to men, speaks in language which is used by those whom he addresses." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sequel to Space, Time and Incarnation, Thomas F. Torrance sets out the biblical approach to the Resurrection in terms of the intrinsic significance of the resurrected one, Jesus; and demonstrates that the Resurrection is entirely consistent with who Jesus was and what he did. The Resurrection is thus taken realistically, and treated as of the same nature, in the integration of physical and spiritual existence, as the death of Christ. All this is elucidated in the context of modern scientific thought, in such a way as to show that far from being frightened by modern science into a compromise of the New Testament's message of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ in body, it actually allows us to take its full measure. This classic volume from one of the premier English speaking theologian of the 20th century remains an important contribution to the field of systematic theology. For this Cornerstones edition, the preface is written by Paul D. Molnar.
