Book Synopsis White House Stone Carving by : Lee H. Nelson
Download or read book White House Stone Carving written by Lee H. Nelson and published by Marine Corps Association. This book was released on 1992 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Americans tend to think of the White House as a symbol of the Presidency rather than an exceptional example of early American craftsmanship. Yet, when seen close-up, the building is both bold and delicate in a way that surprises and impresses most visitors--surprises because such delicate ornamentation is carved out of stone, and impresses because such craftsmanship adds a new dimension to our appreciation of the White House as a landmark building. While a number of stories can be told about building the President's House in the 1790s, this story is limited to what it took to carve a stone building, and the preservation of that work as part of the White House's 200th anniversary"--Page 1.
Book Synopsis Restoration Stone Carving by : Alan Micklethwaite
Download or read book Restoration Stone Carving written by Alan Micklethwaite and published by Robert Hale. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few decorative crafts can claim to be more ancient than stone carving, with the earliest carved objects being dated well into prehistory. The greatest monuments to human civilization, from the temples of ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt to the great cathedrals of Medieval Europe, are richly ornamented with decorative relief and sculpture carved in stone. Alan Micklethwaite, a stone carver with many years' experience in the conservation of historic monuments and sculpture, introduces the reader to the techniques and methodology of restoration stone carving, from simple relief to complex sculpture in the round, set against a sound conservation philosophy. The book provides a thorough understanding of stone as a material and describes its use in sculpture and the agents of its decay, as well as the method by which disfigured carvings can be forensically reconstructed, resulting in the re-emergence of beautifully carved historic architectural sculpture. The book is intended as a detailed introduction to restoration stone carving, and is aimed at those who are learning to carve stone or have an interest in pursuing a career in the conservation of stone sculpture and ancient monuments. While having a depth of detail which will allow it to serve as a reference manual for the professional, it will also inspire the beginner and fuel the interest of those who harbour a desire to pursue traditional crafts."--Front jacket flap.
Book Synopsis The Restoration of Engravings, Drawings, Books, and Other Works on Paper by : Max Schweidler
Download or read book The Restoration of Engravings, Drawings, Books, and Other Works on Paper written by Max Schweidler and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since its original publication in Germany in 1938, Max Schweidler's Die Instandetzung von Kupferstichen, Zeichnungen, Buchern usw has been recognized as a seminal modern text on the conservation and restoration of works on paper. To address what he saw as a woeful dearth of relevant literature and in order to assist those who have 'set themselves the goal of preserving cultural treasures, ' the noted German restorer composed a thorough technical manual covering a wide range of specific techniques, including detailed instructions on how to execute structural repairs and alterations that, if skilfully done, can be virtually undetectable. By the mid-twentieth century, curators and conservators of graphic arts, discovering a nearly invisible repair in an old master print or drawing, might comment that the object had been 'Schweidlerized.' This volume, based on the authoritative revised German edition of 1949, makes Schweidler's work available in English for the first time, in a meticulously edited and annotated critical edition. The editor's introduction places the work in its historical context and probes the philosophical issues the book raises, while some two hundred annotati

Book Synopsis Supports in Roman Marble Sculpture by : Anna Anguissola
Download or read book Supports in Roman Marble Sculpture written by Anna Anguissola and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Figural and non-figural supports are a ubiquitous feature of Roman marble sculpture; they appear in sculptures ranging in size from miniature to colossal and of all levels of quality. At odds with modern ideas about beauty, completeness, and visual congruence, these elements, especially non-figural struts, have been dismissed by scholars as mere safeguards for production and transport. However, close examination of these features reveals the tastes and expectations of those who commissioned, bought, and displayed marble sculptures throughout the Mediterranean in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Drawing on a large body of examples, Greek and Latin literary sources, and modern theories of visual culture, this study constitutes the first comprehensive investigation of non-figural supports in Roman sculpture. The book overturns previous conceptions of Roman visual values and traditions and challenges our understanding of the Roman reception of Greek art.

Book Synopsis The Conservation of Medieval Polychrome Wood Sculpture by : Michele D. Marincola
Download or read book The Conservation of Medieval Polychrome Wood Sculpture written by Michele D. Marincola and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2020-08-18 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English-language book to comprehensively discuss the history and methodology of conserving medieval polychrome wood sculpture. Medieval polychrome wood sculptures are highly complex objects, bearers of histories that begin with their original carving and adornment and continue through long centuries of repainting, deterioration, restoration, and conservation. Abundantly illustrated, this book is the first in English to offer a comprehensive overview of the conservation of medieval painted wood sculpture for conservators, curators, and others charged with their care. Beginning with an illuminating discussion of the history, techniques, and meanings of these works, it continues with their examination and documentation, including chapters on the identification of both the wooden support and the polychromy itself—the paint layers, metal leaf, and other materials used for these sculptures. The volume also covers the many aspects of treatment: the process of determining the best approach; consolidation and adhesion of paint, ground, and support; overpaint removal and surface cleaning; and compensation. Four case studies on artworks in the collection of The Cloisters in New York, a comprehensive bibliography, and a checklist to aid in documentation complement the text.

Book Synopsis The Artists of the Ara Pacis by : Diane Atnally Conlin
Download or read book The Artists of the Ara Pacis written by Diane Atnally Conlin and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 1997 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conlin questions the long-held assumption that the friezes' sculptors were anonymous Greek masters, directly influenced by the reliefs carved on the Parthenon. Through close analysis of the sculptures, Conlin demonstrates that the carvers of the large processional friezes were actually Italian-trained sculptors influenced by both native and Hellenic stonecarving practices. Her conclusions rest on a systematic examination of the evidence left on the marble by the sculptors themselves - the traces of tool marks, the carving of specific details, and the compositional formulas of the friezes.
