Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecosystems are complex and dynamic natural units that produce goods and services beyond those of benefit to fisheries. Because fisheries have a direct impact on the ecosystem, which is also impacted by other human activities, they need to be managed in an ecosystem context. The meaning of the terms "ecosystem management", "ecosystem-based management", "ecosystem approach to fisheries" (EAF), etc., are still not universally defined and progressively evolving. The justification of EAF is evident in the characteristics of an exploited ecosystem and the impacts resulting from fisheries and other activities. The rich set of international agreements of relevance to EAF contains a large number of principles and conceptual objectives. Both provide a fundamental guidance and a significant challenge for the implementation of EAF. The available international instruments also provide the institutional foundations for EAF. The FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries is particularly important in this respect and contains provisions for practically all aspects of the approach. One major difficulty in defining EAF lies precisely in turning the available concepts and principles into operational objectives from which an EAF management plan would more easily be developed. The paper discusses these together with the types of action needed to achieve them. Experience in EAF implementation is still limited but some issues are already apparent,e.g. in added complexity, insufficient capacity, slow implementation, need for a pragmatic approach, etc. It is argued, in conclusion, that the future of EAF and fisheries depends on the way in which the two fundamental concepts of fisheries management and ecosystem management, and their respective stakeholders, will join efforts or collide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluctuations and declines in marine fish populations have caused growing concern among marine scientists, fisheries managers, commercial and recreational fishers, and the public. Sustaining Marine Fisheries explores the nature of marine ecosystems and the complex interacting factors that shape their productivity. The book documents the condition of marine fisheries today, highlighting species and geographic areas that are under particular stress. Challenges to achieving sustainability are discussed, and shortcomings of existing fisheries management and regulation are examined. The volume calls for fisheries management to adopt a broader ecosystem perspective that encompasses all relevant environmental and human influences. Sustaining Marine Fisheries offers new approaches to building workable fisheries management institutions, improving scientific data, and developing management tools. The book recommends ways to change current practices that encourage overexploitation of fish resources. It will be of special interest to marine policymakers and ecologists, fisheries regulators and managers, fisheries scientists and marine ecologists, fishers, and concerned individuals.

Book excerpt: Governance of Marine Fisheries and Biodiversity Conservationexplores governance of the world’s oceans with a focus on theimpacts of two inter-connected but historically separate streams ofgovernance: one for fisheries, the other for biodiversityconservation. Chapters, most co-authored by leading expertsfrom both streams, investigate the interaction of these governancestreams from ecological, economic, social and legal perspectives, with emphasis on policies, institutions processes, and outcomes onscales from the global to the local community, and with coverage ofa range of themes and regions of the world. The book opens with chapters setting the historical context for thetwo marine governance streams, and framing the book’sexploration of whether, as the streams increasingly interact, therewill be merger or collision, convergence or co-evolution. Theconcluding chapter synthesizes the insights from throughout thebook, relative to the questions posed in the openingchapters. It also draws conclusions about future needs anddirections in the governance of marine fisheries and biodiversity, vital to the future of the world’s oceans. With cutting edge chapters written by many leading internationalexperts in fisheries management and biodiversity conservation, andedited by three leading figures in this crucially importantsubject, Governance of Marine Fisheries and BiodiversityConservation is an essential purchase for fisheries scientists, economists, resource managers and policymakers, and all thoseworking in fields of biodiversity conservation, marine ecology, andcoastal livelihoods. Libraries in all universities and researchestablishments where environmental and/or marine studies, conservation, ocean policy and law, biological and life sciences, and fisheries management are studied and taught, should have copiesof this most important book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responsible fisheries management is of increasing interest to the scientific community, resource managers, policy makers, stakeholders and the general public. Focusing solely on managing one species of fish stock at a time has become less of a viable option in addressing the problem. Incorporating more holistic considerations into fisheries management by addressing the trade-offs among the range of issues involved, such as ecological principles, legal mandates and the interests of stakeholders, will hopefully challenge and shift the perception that doing ecosystem-based fisheries management is unfeasible. Demonstrating that EBFM is in fact feasible will have widespread impact, both in US and international waters. Using case studies, underlying philosophies and analytical approaches, this book brings together a range of interdisciplinary topics surrounding EBFM and considers these simultaneously, with an aim to provide tools for successful implementation and to further the debate on EBFM, ultimately hoping to foster enhanced living marine resource management.

This book was released on 2018-11-16 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The basis of this How-to Guide is the identification of key minimum components for legislating for EAF (17 components that should be included in sector-specific legislation), the operationalization of those key components into concrete drafting steps, and the provision of relevant examples from national legislation, largely from Africa but also from other parts of the world. The review will also provide a synthesis of existing challenges and trends in legislating for EAF. In summary, the How-t o-Guide will assist managers by: • describing the component that should be reflected in legislation; • identifying the specific elements that need to considered in the drafting of legislation; • setting out answers to the questions posed as justification for the relevance or significance of the component; and • outlining the steps to take in drafting, with reference to examples that could provide inspiration.

Human dimensions play four main roles in EAF: (1) social, economic and institutional objectives and factors are driving forces behind the need for EAF management; (2) the costs and benefits to individuals and to society of appli\ying the EAF have social, economic and institutional impacts and implications; (3) the application of social, economic and institutional instruments are all crucial for successful implementation of the EAF; and (4) social, economic and institutional factors present in fishery systems can play either supporting or constraining roles in EAF implementation.
