Book excerpt: Riverine benthic macroinvertebrates (BMI) communities are regulated, in part, by the dynamic character of the river's flow regime. Purpose of this study was to assess the influence of a flow regime component (i.e., large flow pulse) on BMI riffle communities, specifically that large flow pulses shifted structure (i.e., richness and density), and therefore maintain the biotic integrity of riverine riffle BMI communities. Predictions were that BMI richness and density would decrease and recover with large flow pulses, ranging between 1 in 2 year events (340 m3/s) to 1 in 5 year events (331 to 886 m3/s), but that density reductions and recovery would differ among taxa categorized as swift, moderate, and slack forms. BMI communities were monitored at 11 sites located in three river basins and distributed among upper and lower reaches of major rivers and tributary streams. A total of 93,400 aquatic macroinvertebrates were identified to family and used to estimate BMI richness and BMI density among 102 riffles (61 riffles pre-flood and 41 riffles post-flood) between 2014 and 2017. Physical and chemical aspects of riffle habitats were similar between pre-flood and post-flood, except that post-flood riffles had less sand and gravel than pre-flood. BMI communities were similar among river basins and were segregated along environmental gradients related to physical and chemical (16%), season (6%), and flood (2%) effects. Only a few sites differed in BMI richness and density between pre-flood and post-flood, indicating that BMI communities among seven of the 11 sites likely recovered before the post-flood sampling events. Increased densities or relative abundances were detected at four sites for swift BMI, at one site for moderate BMI, and at one site for slack BMI. Decreased densities or relative abundances were detected at one site for moderate BMI and at two sites for slack BMI. Among taxa, relative abundances of seven BMI families, which were categorized as swift or moderate, generally increased among the 11 sites, whereas relative abundances of five BMI families, which were categorized as moderate or slack, generally decreased among the 11 sites. Although increasing or decreasing trends in BMI categories and families between pre-flood and post-flood periods were not consistent among all sites, study results suggest that density and relative abundance of some BMI taxa responded positively (e.g., Baetidae, Hydropsychidae, Isonychiidae) and negatively (e.g., Elmidae, Leptophlebiidae, Chironomidae) to high flow pulses. Therefore, flow-responsive BMI taxa found in this study provide potential indicator species for environmental flow standards assessments, although the ubiquitous use of these indicator species across and within drainages is limited.

Book excerpt: Benthic macroinvertebrates (BMI) are widely used as bio-indicators for local in-stream quality. However, local community structure can be affected by smaller scale (local) environmental conditions and larger scale processes. I assessed the abundance and diversity of BMI and their relationship with local in-stream conditions, regional patterns of land-use/land cover (LULC), and large scale physiographic gradients across the Guadalupe River System, a large basin (3,256 km2) in Central Texas. Macroinvertebrates, water quality, and habitat conditions across 28 sites in the Guadalupe River and its main tributaries were sampled. Highest species diversity occurred near the headwaters, and decreased downstream. Pollution tolerance levels increased downstream and followed an increasing agriculture gradient. Landscape factors explained a large proportion of variation in macroinvertebrate community structure (38%), but 16% of it was spatially structured (shared with spatial factors latitude and longitude) and 4% was explained by spatial factors alone. Local environmental factors were strongly correlated with landscape factors and explained similar amount of variation as landscape factors. My study highlights the importance of incorporating physiographic gradients when examining local and regional diversity and composition of BMI communities, especially in large complex watersheds. My results will help develop more effective monitoring programs for larger river systems.

Human activities significantly impact both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Local environmental factors are known to influence the structure and function of stream ecosystems and biodiversity. The patterns of benthic macroinvertebrate distribution are related to the natural and human influenced variation of environmental factors. Ecologists assess stream physical and biological conditions in response to human land use activities using ecological indicators. This study is an assessment of the ecological condition of the Lower Brazos River Watershed. Macroinvertebrate assemblage structure was compared from 33 sites within the 6 subbasins differing in land use type and degree. Land use within the subbasins was measured using data from the National Land Use Database. Benthic macroinvertebrate samples were collected and a variety of physiochemical variables were measured. Multivariate analysis grouped the subbasins using habitat variables and macroinvertebrate assemblages. Decreasing habitat heterogeneity resulted in a decline of diversity and richness of organisms. Differences in the richness and diversity of the macroinvertebrate assemblages are attributed to habitat structure and land use. This study highlights the importance of considering both local habitat and landscape parameters of watersheds in stream biological assessments to understand the response of benthic communities to disturbances.

Book excerpt: In the San Marcos River, recreational activities are most pronounced between April and October. Given the continued urbanization and increasing population in San Marcos there is need for a quantitative study on the possible effect of elevated recreational activities on the aquatic macroinvertebrates within the river. Furthermore, currently, there has been no study which quantified patterns in macroinvertebrate drift and benthic community structure simultaneously in the San Marcos River. Information on drift patterns and benthic macroinvertebrate habitat relationships is necessary to understand mechanisms for species persistence within the San Marcos River. In this study, I examined the seasonal and longitudinal patterns of benthic macroinvertebrate community composition at three different sites within the San Marcos River. I also examined the seasonal and longitudinal response of the drifting aquatic macroinvertebrates to changes in their habitat as a result of recreational activities in the San Marcos River. Tubing and swimming accounted for most of the recreation activity (>90%). Across all seasons, the upstream most study site had the highest drift densities compared to two downstream study sites. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) results explained 15.3% of the variability in the San Marcos River benthic macroinvertebrate community among vegetated habitats and 23.9% among open substrate habitats. Study results indicated that drift is related to benthic abundance. Macroinvertebrate drift densities followed the typical circadian pattern observed in other river systems and results indicated no increase in macroinvertebrate drift density during the peak recreation period. Conclusively, study results indicated that macroinvertebrates at the two upstream sites were not impacted by recreation and turbidity. However, the lower most study site, based on the CCA results indicate that substrate and turbidity are factors influencing the macroinvertebrate community.

Book excerpt: Author's Abstract: River floodplain habitats of the Southeastern United States are sites of high biological productivity that rely on a predictable flooding event as a keystone process. This study took place in a river-floodplain area of the Altamaha River, an unimpounded large-order river in the Coastal Plains region of the US. This study aims to investigate how aquatic macroinvertebrate communities changed over the course of the annual flood pulse. I predicted that the communities would be different and that the differences would be driven by hydrology at the main stem and organic matter standing stock availability. I took quantitative samples of benthic macroinvertebrates monthly from December 2011-April 2012 and from December 2012- April 2014. Invertebrate abundance was assessed and biomass was obtained using published length-mass regressions. Year 1 (2011-2012) was characterized by severe drought. And Year 2 was characterized by a large flooding event. There was a significant difference between the communities. In year 1 the community was influenced by hydrology and high FBOM standing stocks. In year 2 the community was influenced by hydrology and low CBOM standing stocks. This study shows the importance of a flooding event in river floodplain systems and supports the idea that floodplains act as a source of organic matter to the main stem and are sites of high biological productivity especially from aquatic macroinvertebrates. As unimpounded rivers are becoming increasingly rare, it is important to understand how these systems function in both normal and abnormal (i.e., drought vs. flood) conditions.
