Book excerpt: Reinforced Concrete (RC) bridge piers, RC columns along exterior of buildings or those located in parking garages are designed to support large compressive axial loads but are vulnerable to transverse out-of-plane loadings, such as those arising from impacts or explosions. To address a lack of understanding regarding blast and impact response of RC members and the need for retrofit techniques to address deficiencies in existing structures, a multi-disciplinary team including various institutes of the National Research Council and the University of Ottawa has initiated work towards developing a fibre reinforced polymer composite protection system for RC columns subjected to extreme shocks. This thesis will focus on the impact program of the aforementioned project. An extensive literature review was conducted to gain a better understanding of: impact loading and associated dynamic effects; experimental testing of RC members subjected to impact; experimental testing of axially loaded members; and retrofit methods for the protection of RC under impact loading. Five half-scale RC columns were constructed and tested using a drop-weight impact machine and two additional specimens were tested under static loading. Deflections, strain distributions within the columns, impact loads and reaction loads were measured during the testing of the built RC members. Comparisons of experimental datum were established between members with differing levels of axial load and between a retrofitted and a non-retrofitted member. Single-degree-of-freedom analysis was used to obtain the predicted response of certain columns under impact loading allowing for comparisons with experimental data.

Book excerpt: Although much research focuses on investigating the responses of reinforced concrete (RC) structures under sole impact or blast loads, the responses of RC structures under a combination of impact and blast loads currently represent a gap in our knowledge. The combined actions of impact and blast loadings may be applied to RC structures during accidental or intentional collision of vessels, vehicles, etc., carrying explosive materials. A comprehensive study on the vulnerability of various structural members is carried out using finite element (FE) simulations under combination of impact and blast loads with the variations of various loading- and structural-related parameters and key parameters. This book introduces various structural analysis approaches for concrete structures when subjected to extreme loads such as impact and blast loadings. The theory of the combinations of impact and blast loads is proposed that can provide primary insights to the specific readers to develop new ideas in impact and blast engineering, including combined actions of extreme loads arising from real-world intentional or accidental events. This book will be of value to students (undergraduate or postgraduate), engineers, and researchers in structural and civil engineering, and specifically, those who are studying and investigating the performances of concrete structures under extreme loads.

Book excerpt: Abstract: There is significantly large number of reinforced concrete buildings in the US and many parts of the world that are not designed according to prevailing seismic code provisions. These buildings are often characterized by low lateral displacement capacity and rapid degradation of shear strength and hence are vulnerable to severe damage or even collapse during strong ground motions. Typically, columns in such buildings have insufficient and widely spaced transverse reinforcement and lack essential seismic reinforcement details. These columns exhibit lack of strength and ductility in reverse cyclic loading and are vulnerable to brittle shear failure and loss of axial load carrying capacity during strong ground shaking. The need to assess their vulnerability to earthquake damage and hence suggesting the desired level of retrofit requires evaluation of the expected behavior in terms of strength and deformation capacity. This can be achieved by estimating the load-deformation response considering all potential failure mechanisms associated with axial, flexure and shear behavior. This study evaluates two different macro models to investigate their capabilities to determine the lateral response. Based on the comparison of the predicted responses with experimental test data, an analytical procedure is proposed. In the proposed procedure, flexural and shear deformations are determined while considering interaction between these mechanisms. Flexural deformations are calculated by incorporating effect of shear deformation on flexural performance through compression softening factor. Likewise, shear deformations are calculated by employing axial strain and shear stresses from axial-flexure model to consider the effect of flexural deformations on shear behavior. The interaction between axial-flexure and axial-shear mechanisms allows for accurate response estimation while decoupled flexural analysis minimizes iterations within the analysis and make the process relatively simple and easy. In addition, buckling of compression bars is also incorporated by considering separate stress-strain relationships for reinforcing steel in tension and compression. The displacement due to reinforcement slip are calculated separately and added to flexural and shear displacements. Total lateral response is obtained by combining deformation components due to flexure, shear and reinforcement slip according to a set of rules based on comparison of the column yield, flexural and shear strength. The comparison of the predicted responses with experimental test data showed that proposed procedure performs well in estimating response of reinforced concrete columns to lateral loads.

Chapters 1 and 2 discuss the energy release processes which generate accidental explosions, and the resulting development of pressure and shock waves in a surrounding atmosphere. The manner in which the "free-field" waves are modified in interacting with structures or other objects in their paths is discussed in Chapter 3. Structural response to blast loading and non-penetrating impact is covered in two chapters, with Chapter 4 including simplified analysis methods and Chapter 5 including numerical methods. Chapter 6 includes a rather comprehensive treatment of generation of fragments and missiles in explosions, and the flight and effects of impact of these objects. Chapter 7 considers thermal radiation of large chemical explosions. Explosions may or may not cause damage or casualty, and various damage criteria have been developed for structures, vehicles, and people. These criteria are presented in Chapter 8. General procedures for both the postmortem evaluation of accidental explosions and for design for blast and impact resistance are reviewed in Chapter 9. Engineers, scientists, and plant safety personnel will find the book very useful.

Book excerpt: Reinforced concrete is one of the prime building materials widely used to construct protective structures. One of the purposes of this project is to study the non-linear response of reinforced concrete structures when subjected to impact and blast loading. The study is conducted at two levels: material level and structural level. At the material level, the strength enhancement of three material models of LS-DYNA subjected to high strain rates is studied. The effects of strain rate and lateral inertial confinement on the strength enhancement are investigated. Recommendations are made to improve the accuracy of the results of future numerical simulations for reinforced concrete structures subjected to loads having high strain rates. At the structural level, Pressure-Impulse diagrams for reinforced concrete columns that have four configurations of transverse reinforcement are developed. Finite element modeling in LS-DYNA is used to analyze the structures and calculate the damage level for each blast event. The developed Pressure-Impulse diagrams are used to study the effect of confinement on the reduction of damage level at impulsive, dynamic, and quasi-static loading conditions.

Book excerpt: Terrorism has been an international threat to high occupancy civilian structures, government buildings, and military installations for many years. Statistical data from past terrorist attacks show that transportation infrastructure has been widely targeted, and a bombing of an ordinary highway bridge is a realistic scenario. Recent threats to bridges in the U.S. confirm this concern and have caught the attention of the bridge engineering community. Given that many ordinary highway bridges in the United States support critical emergency evacuation routes, military transportation plans, and vital economic corridors, the loss of a key bridge could result in severe national security, economic, and socioeconomic consequences. Therefore, in this research, a simplified procedure is developed to predict blast loads on bridge columns, and an understanding of the mechanisms that cause damage and ultimately failure of blast-loaded reinforced concrete bridge columns is advanced. To that end, computational fluid dynamics models are constructed and validated using experimental data. These numerical models are used to characterize the structural loads experienced by square and circular bridge columns subjected to blast loads, which is followed by the formulation of a simplified load prediction procedure. Additionally, nonlinear, three-dimensional, dynamic finite element models of blast-loaded reinforced concrete bridge columns are developed and validated using qualitative and quantitative data from recent experimental tests. The results of these analyses illustrate the fact that circular columns cannot be assumed to experience less base shear demand than a square column simply because they experience less net resultant impulse. Furthermore, the column response models developed in this research are used to identify and explain the mechanisms that lead to the spalling of side cover concrete off blast-loaded reinforced concrete members observed in recent experimental tests. Therefore, the results of this research advance the understanding of the structural loads on and the resulting response of reinforced concrete bridge columns subjected to blast loads, and as such these contributions to the structural engineering community enhance the security of the U.S. transportation infrastructure.

Book excerpt: The objectives of MC2010 are to (a) serve as a basis for future codes for concrete structures, and (b) present new developments with regard to concrete structures, structural materials and new ideas in order to achieve optimum behaviour. MC2010 includes the whole life cycle of a concrete structure, from design and construction to conservation (assessment, maintenance, strengthening) and dismantlement, in one code for buildings, bridges and other civil engineering structures. Design is largely based on performance requirements. The chapter on materials is extended with new types of concrete and reinforcement (such as fibres and non-metallic reinforcements). The fib Model Code 2010 also gives corresponding explanations in a separate column of the document. Additionally, MC2010 is supported by background documents that have already been (or will soon be) published in fib bulletins and journal articles. MC2010 is now the most comprehensive code on concrete structures, including their complete life cycle: conceptual design, dimensioning, construction, conservation and dismantlement.
