Book excerpt: This book draws on the findings of a two-year European research project to offer answers to the 'problem' of how to respond to violence involving young people that continues to challenge youth workers and policy makers. 'Responding to violence through youth work' combines elements of critical theory, psychosocial criminology and applied existential philosophy to present a new model for responding meaningfully and effectively to these issues, demonstrated through a series of case studies and insider accounts generated through peer research.

In this book, Mike Seal and Pete Harris draw on the findings of a two-year European research project--in which peer researchers spoke to young people--to examine different responses to youth violence. Developing a unique analytical framework that combines elements of critical theory, psychosocial criminology, and applied existential philosophy, the authors present a new model for responding meaningfully and effectively to these issues at personal/psychological, community/cultural, and structural/symbolic levels. Through a series of case studies, Seal and Harris show how these approaches have been applied in different practice settings. Essential reading in the fields of youth and community work, social work, criminology, youth justice, and youth studies, this book will stimulate critical new thinking and encourage reflective and theoretically informed responses to addressing youth violence in practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book places youth violence within a Routine Activity Ecological Framework. Youth violence, specifically youth exposure to community violence and youth perpetration of violent behaviors, occur within various contexts. Ahlin and Antunes situate their discussion of youth violence within an ecological framework, identifying how it is nested within four mesosystem layers: community, family, peers and schools, and youth characteristics. Contextualized using an ecological framework, the Routine Activity Theory and Lifestyles perspective (RAT/LS) are well suited to guide an examination of youth violence risk and protective factors across the four layers. Drawing on scholarship that explores predictors and consequences of youth violence, the authors apply RAT/LS theory to explain how community, family, peers, schools, and youth characteristics influence youth behavior. Each layer of the ecological framework unfolds to reveal the latest scholarship and contextualizes how concepts of RAT/LS, specifically the motivated offender, target suitability, and guardianship, can be applied at each level. This book also highlights the mechanisms and processes that contribute to youth exposure to and involvement in violence by exploring factors examined in the literature as protective and risk factors of youth violence. Youth violence occurs in context, and, as such, the understanding of multilevel predictors and preventive measures against it can be situated within an RAT/LS ecological framework. This work links theory to extant research. Ahlin and Antunes demonstrate how knowledge of youth violence can be used to develop a robust theoretical foundation that can inform policy to improve neighborhoods and youth experiences within their communities, families, and peers and within their schools while acknowledging the importance of individual characteristics. This monograph is essential reading for those interested in youth violence, juvenile delinquency, and juvenile justice research and anyone dedicated to preventing crime among youths.

Book excerpt: This report from the United States Surgeon General is the result of a review of the scientific literature and analyses of new data relating to youth violence. It identifies and quantifies factors, in particular settings of combinations, that increase the probability that violence will occur. It also presents an array of interventions of well-documented effectiveness in helping young people whose lives are already marked by a propensity for violence as well as in preventing others from viewing violence as a solution to needs, wants, or problems. This report is divided into six chapters. The first serves as an introduction and offers chapter conclusions for chapters two through five. Those chapters discuss the magnitude of youth violence; the developmental dynamics of youth violence; risk factors for youth violence; and prevention and intervention. The final chapter examines a vision for the future. Each chapter includes a list of references. The executive summary of this report is included in a separate booklet. (Contains an index.) (MKA)

Book excerpt: Youth violence is not a unique phenomenon, and, in fact, youth have been plagued with challenges throughout the centuries that have placed them at risk of violent tendencies. These challenges include poverty, inadequate healthcare, limited educational opportunities, exploitation, gender inequality, substance abuse, mental health concerns, homelessness, gang involvement, and family dysfunction. Further, these challenges are not unique to youth within the United States; however, these experiences may differ in terms of chronicity, intensity, and impact. In all youth, these challenges create stress and trauma that compromise well-being. This book explores the challenges that youth experience, and provides context to better understand the factors related, and contributing, to those issues. The chapters describing realistic and practical violence prevention and remediation programs, which are both innovative and effective, are particularly unique. Additionally, there are a number of chapters that discuss the latest technological advances in helping young people, as well as evidence-based assessments and evaluations to help those who work with young people understand the needs of at-risk youth.

This book was released on 2000-07-31 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series of monographs is dedicated to the increasingly vital area of prevention in healthcare. The works are organized into four categories of preventive practice: education, social competency enhancement, natural caregiving, and systems change. Tragedy should not and need not occur before a school or community begins making efforts to prevent violence. This volume describes the steps taken by Responding In Peaceful and Positive Ways (RIPP), a program developed to promote `non-violence' among students in middle schools. RIPP provides young people with new ways to respond to conflict. Using the acronym RAID, the students are taught four types of non-violent options: Resolve, Avoid, Ignore, and Diffuse. By teaching that they have other choices in any conflict, the idea that `fighting' is a necessary response to an insult or a conflict is dispelled. RIPP also teaches the need for everyone to accept differences, to affirm those with whom they come in contact, and not to engage in `put downs' of others. This empirically validated program has been proven to work in a variety of settings and was designed with real-life experiences in mind. It was originally developed and implemented in collaboration with school administrators in both urban and rural settings.
