Book excerpt: The discussion around whether entrepreneurship can be taught is becoming obsolete as the number of entrepreneurship courses, specializations and degrees is rising at an unprecedented rate all over the world and the demand for entrepreneurial education teachers or instructors is constantly growing. The global community of entrepreneurial education proponents is enthusiastic about the possibility of spreading the idea of entrepreneurship, as it is believed to benefit societies and economies in addition to influencing human development on an individual level. The fervour is nurtured by public policies and the development of an enterprising culture in the public discourse. In this discourse, entrepreneurship is treated as a panacea for numerous social and economic problems. This book is a solid reference point for all who are interested in conducting research on entrepreneurial education or engaged in teaching entrepreneurship. It is a compendium of knowledge about entrepreneurial education as a research field, seen from the perspective of the last four decades, its complete contemporary history. It reviews the progress of the field from the outset to the present in terms of its socio-economic context, changes in the academic community, but also its research focus and methodological development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent momentum and urgency around translating science and technology into health innovation is inspiring. It is transforming academia, too, as the rapidly-evolving world of health innovation has given rise to a new breed of academic - the academic entrepreneur - who works to move ideas from initial research to practical implementation. The work of these individuals is crucial to realizing the potential of investments in better care, and yet there existed no central repository for information and wisdom relevant to their mission; no place to house and explore the evolving knowledge base around translating evidence into impact. We aim to build one. In the spirit of collaboration, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) Research Institute collaborated with the University of Pennsylvania's (Penn) Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT) to seed fund a grassroots effort of editors, subject matter experts, and translational research students to create a free open education resource stored on ScholarlyCommons (University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA).Academic Entrepreneurship seeks to build a diverse community of empowered professionals who know how to bridge the worlds of academic research and commercialization to turn ideas and discoveries into innovations that provide value to patients, providers, and healthcare systems, thereby realizing full market potential and societal impact. This book is a repository of tools, advice, and best practices that establishes a foundation for academic researchers and innovators wherever they may reside.Recognizing that academic entrepreneurs are busy and bright, and have limited time to learn entrepreneurship, the chapters in this book were designed as an efficient and state-of-the-art source of guidance. With carefully curated content as a strong foundation, the reader will have quick introductions to key topics in academic entrepreneurship and innovations with a list of resources for those who wish to go further. This book was created as a limited print run of the first edition of the living content stored in the University of Pennsylvania's open access repository, ScholarlyCommons, as of 1/1/2020. As a living e-textbook, the content of Academic Entrepreneurship for Medical and Health Scientists is continuously enhanced and revised.

Book excerpt: The United States is abundantly rich in adults with "know how." By connecting mentors -- educated adults with expertise and knowledge -- with mentees -- teens and young adults who lack motivation, experience, and role models in their lives -- we can begin to close this gap dramatically. We can prepare the next generation for the jobs of tomorrow by adding real-world, project based experience to their education. Teach to Work is a call to action for mentors currently sitting on the sidelines. Whether you are a banker, lawyer, architect, accountant, engineer, IT specialist, or artist, you have the experience and skillset to become an ambassador of talent, grit, and transferable skills. The book provides a step-by-step guide to help professionals share their knowledge with the next generation of workers through this intergenerational experience. Based on Alper's fifteen years of mentoring inner-city high-school students, Teach to Work proves how corporations, professionals, and boomers can have a significant impact on the professional future of America's youth. Drawing from real-life stories and letters received from students, teachers, and fellow mentors describing pride of accomplishment, Alper helps professionals embark on this journey to transform lives, mentoring one student at a time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of this volume is that it addresses the major pedagogical issues that inevitably arise in the context of entrepreneurship education. It represents a valuable source for those involved in the training and development of entrepreneurial skills and initiative. Economic Outlook and Business Review Can entrepreneurship be taught? Is it an art or a science? How is entrepreneurship learned? Another masterpiece by the European masters Fayolle and Klandt, this volume based on the 2003 Grenoble Conference will be useful for years to come, among educators and policymakers alike, especially those open to the emerging paradigm. Léo-Paul Dana, University of Canterbury, New Zealand This book discusses paradigmatic changes in the field of entrepreneurship education in response to economic, political and social needs, and the consequential need to reassess, redevelop and renew curricula and methods used in teaching entrepreneurship. Traditional and new questions and concerns are addressed, including: the development of business schools towards entrepreneurship education best-practice methods of learning and teaching entrepreneurship both inside and outside the classroom the design of effective teaching frameworks and tools the development of entrepreneurial behaviours and attitudes in students teaching the design and launch of new businesses. The issue of assessing the effectiveness of entrepreneurship education is also raised. A theoretical and methodological framework is used to measure the impact and effectiveness of entrepreneurship education programmes on the attitudes and behaviours of students. Now more than ever, the book argues, research in the field of entrepreneurship education has to be encouraged and facilitated, and should drive the activity of entrepreneurship education providers. As such, this fascinating book aims to provide researchers, practitioners, teachers and advanced students engaged in the field of entrepreneurship with relevant and up-to-date insights into international research programmes in entrepreneurship education.

Book excerpt: Entrepreneurship has attracted global interest for its potential to catalyze economic and social development. Research suggesting that certain entrepreneurial mindsets and skills can be learned has given rise to the field of entrepreneurship education and training (EET). Despite the growth of EET, global knowledge about these programs and their impact remains thin. In response, this study surveys the available literature and program evaluations to propose a Conceptual Framework for understanding the EET program landscape. The study finds that EET today consists of a heterogeneous mix of programs that can be broken into two groups: entrepreneurship education and entrepreneurship training. These programs target a range of participants: secondary and post-secondary education students, as well as potential and practicing entrepreneurs. The outcomes measured by program evaluations are equally diverse but generally fall under the domains of entrepreneurial mindsets and capabilities, entrepreneurial status, and entrepreneurial performance. The dimensions of EET programs vary according the particular target group. Programs targeting secondary education students focus on the development of foundational skills linked to entrepreneurship, while post-secondary education programs emphasize skills related to strategic business planning. Programs targeting potential entrepreneurs generally are embedded within broader support programs and tend to target vulnerable populations for whom employment alternatives may be limited. While programs serving practicing entrepreneurs focus on strengthening entrepreneurs knowledge, skills and business practices, which while unlikely to transform an enterprise in the near term, may accrue benefits to entrepreneurs over time. The study also offers implications for policy and program implementation, emphasizing the importance of clarity about target groups and desired outcomes when making program choices, and sound understanding of extent to which publicly-supported programs offer a broader public good, and compare favorably to policy alternatives for supporting the targeted individuals as well as the overall economic and social objectives.
