Book excerpt: We study best-of-k contests (k=2,3) between two players. The players have heterogeneous resource budgets that decrease within the stages proportionally to the resource allocated in the previous stages such that for each resource unit that a player allocates, he loses [alpha] (the fatigue parameter) units of resources from his budget. We show that in both contest forms, independent of the values of the fatigue parameters, each player allocates his smallest resource in the last stage. In the best-of three contest where there are different fatigue parameters for each of the two first stages, a sufficient condition that the resource allocation in the first stage is larger than in the second one is that the value of the fatigue parameter of the first stage is smaller than or equal to the value of the fatigue parameter of the second stage. We also show that in the best-of-three contest, if the fatigue parameters are sufficiently large (approaches one), both players allocate almost all their resource budgets in the first two stages such that they have no resources left for the last stage in which the winner might be decided.

Book excerpt: We study a class of multi-stage imperfectly discriminatory team contests with Blotto budgets and complete information. We fully characterize the pure strategy Nash equilibrium for this class of contests under certain basic assumptions, and show that in the two-stage case, there will be a unique pure strategy Nash equilibrium. In equilibrium, the effect of not very strong intra-group endowment differences will be completely erased, and the contest will show a strong ``intra-team fairness'' property. When the contest is extended to three or more stages, there will be still a unique symmetric equilibrium, but will also exist a continuum of asymmetric equilibria. The equilibrium outcome under the 3+ stage setting still maintains ``the generalized intra-group fairness'' property, which means that the combat units in the same superior combat unit in the previous stage, will invest the same resources in this stage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the current development status of high-speed railways globally and analyzes their operational schemes and practices under emergent conditions. It covers methods and problem-solving philosophy with regard to complexity analysis, capacity evaluation, passenger-flow forecasts, operating strategies, passenger-flow allocation, resource allocation and supporting technologies in the context of serious accidents and adverse environmental influences on train operation and service organization of high-speed railways. The abnormal scenarios, emergent conditions, adverse events and corresponding theoretical and applicational solutions dealing with the train operation both in line and network scale are all from real-world cases related to and designed for Chinese high-speed railway network which is the largest in scale, the highest in complexity and the most difficult in tackling with the complex and diverse climate and geographical environment , and thus makes the book both theoretically rigorous and practically applicable. It not only helps readers consider the train and network interactions from the perspective of complexity science, but also provides them with a philosophical framework and approaches available to construct their own roadmap and problem-solving paradigms in their daily research or management. This book is suitable for researchers, postgraduates and managerial and engineering practitioners in railway-related fields, especially in high-speed railway operation and emergency management.

Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive book on Military Cost-Benefit Analysis and provides novel approaches to structuring cost-benefit and affordability analysis amidst an uncertain defense environment and cloudy fiscal prospects. Lifting the veil on military Cost-Benefit Analysis, this volume offers several new practical tools designed to guide defense investments (and divestments), combined with a selection of real-world applications. The widespread employment of Cost-Benefit Analysis offers a unique opportunity to transform legacy defense forces into efficient, effective, and accountable 21st century organizations. A synthesis of economics, statistics and decision theory, CBA is currently used in a wide range of defense applications in countries around the world: i) to shape national security strategy, ii) to set acquisition policy, and iii) to inform critical investments in people, equipment, infrastructure, services and supplies. As sovereign debt challenges squeeze national budgets, and emerging threats disrupt traditional notions of security, this volume offers valuable tools to navigate the political landscape, meet calls for fiscal accountability, and boost the effectiveness of defense investments to help guarantee future peace and stability. A valuable resource for scholars, practitioners, novices and experts, this book offers a comprehensive overview of Military Cost-Benefit Analysis and will appeal to anyone interested or involved in improving national security, and will also be of general interest to those responsible for major government programs, projects or policies.

Book excerpt: Contests are prevalent in many areas, including sports, rent seeking, patent races, innovation inducement, labor markets, scientific projects, crowdsourcing and other online services, and allocation of computer system resources. This book provides unified, comprehensive coverage of contest theory as developed in economics, computer science, and statistics, with a focus on online services applications, allowing professionals, researchers and students to learn about the underlying theoretical principles and to test them in practice. The book sets contest design in a game-theoretic framework that can be used to model a wide-range of problems and efficiency measures such as total and individual output and social welfare, and offers insight into how the structure of prizes relates to desired contest design objectives. Methods for rating the skills and ranking of players are presented, as are proportional allocation and similar allocation mechanisms, simultaneous contests, sharing utility of productive activities, sequential contests, and tournaments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between the government and the market lies at the heart of Economics as a discipline. This title approaches this issue with a new lens termed mezzoeconomics—A branch of modern economics that mainly studies regional economic entities and the allocation of regional resources after they are generated. Combining mezzoeconomic theory with practice in the light of China’s Reform and Opening-up, the author analyzes the regional governments’ participation in market competition, the dual entities (enterprises and regional governments) of market competition, and a mature market economy featuring a strong form of effective government and efficient market. Three corresponding theories are proposed—the Regional Government Competition Theory, the Dual-Entity of Market Competition Theory (DEMC), and the “Double Strong Forms” Theory. The author hopes that these theories of mezzoeconomics can build a new, effective theoretical model and serve as a guidance for regional governments to reform and innovate their governance philosophy and policies. This book will be of keen interest to students and scholars of economics and regional governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of original papers selected from the 19th Conference on Postal and Delivery Economics and authored by an international cast of economists, lawyers, regulators and industry practitioners addresses perhaps the major problem that has ever faced the postal sector – electronic competition from information and communication technologies (ICT). This has increased significantly over the last few years with a consequent serious drop in mail volume. All postal services have been hard hit by ICT, but probably the hardest hit is the United States Postal Service, which has lost almost a quarter of its mail volume since 2007. The loss of mail volume has a devastating effect on scale economies, which now work against post offices, forcing up their unit costs. Strategies to stem the loss in volume include non-linear pricing or volume discounts, increased efficiency and the development of new products. This loss of mail volume from ICT is one of a number of current problems addressed in this volume. The Universal Service Obligation (USO) continues to be a leading issue and concern that ICT undermines postal services' ability to finance the USO is discussed. The importance of measuring and forecasting demand and costs take on even greater importance as ICT undermines the foundations of the postal business. This thought provoking book brings to bear new analyses of the most serious threat post offices have ever faced and raises fundamental questions as to the future of mail. Multi-Modal Competition and the Future of Mail is an ideal resource for students, researchers in regulation and competition law, postal administrations, policy makers, consulting firms and regulatory bodies.

Book excerpt: This book aims at providing cases with inspiring findings for global researchers in capacity allocation and reservation. Capacity allocation mechanisms are introduced in the book, as well as the measures to build models and the ways to achieve supply chain coordination. In addition, it illustrates the capacity reservation contract and quantity flexible contract with comparisons and some numerical studies. The book is divided into 7 chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the background and the latest development of the research. Chapter 2 introduces how to manage downstream competition through capacity allocation in symmetric market, including proportional mechanism and lexicographic mechanism. Demand competition is introduced in Chapter 3 as well as the uniform allocation mechanism and the comparisons among three different mechanisms. In Chapter 4, we give information about demand competition with fixed factor allocation, and the comparison with other allocations. Chapter 5 provides the optimal strategies under fixed allocation with multiple retailers and the impacts of fixed proportions. Chapter 6 illustrates how to achieve supply chain coordination through capacity reservation contract and its comparison with the quantity flexibility contract, and in Chapter 7 we describe outsourcing decisions and order policies in different systems with some numerical studies. We sincerely hope that this book can provide some useful suggestions and inspirations for scholars around the world who have the same interests in this field.
