Book excerpt: Ten Practical Resolutions to Stand Strong in the Shifting Sands of Culture We all face seasons in our lives when our circumstances seem out of our control and all the forces in this world seem against us. We become discouraged and afraid. We are tempted to give up. No matter how strong we claim our faith in God is, when life is hard, it all comes down to resolve. Do we really believe what we say we believe? And does what we profess with our lips make it beyond intellectual assent and into our everyday actions? Both challenging and encouraging, Resolved unpacks ten life-impacting resolutions that every follower of Jesus Christ must make in order to stand strong in the shifting sands of our culture. It helps readers who long to exhibit authentic lives understand and eliminate the disconnect between what we say we believe and how we live. And it offers biblical strategies for change that will allow us to stand strong--no matter what. Endorsement "AbuJamra challenges us to live out our faith in the real world when things do not go as we wish."--Gary D. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time-resolved optical stimulation of luminescence has become established as an important method for measurement of optically stimulated luminescence. Its enduring appeal is easy to see with the number of materials studied growing from the initial focus on natural minerals such as quartz and feldspar to synthetic dosimeters such as -Al2O3:C, BeO and YAlO3:Mn2+. The aim of time-resolved optical stimulation is to separate in time the stimulation and emission of luminescence. The luminescence is stimulated from a sample using a brief light pulse. The ensuing luminescence can be monitored either during stimulation in the presence of scattered stimulating light or after the light-pulse. The time-resolved luminescence spectrum measured in this way can be resolved into components each with a distinct lifetime. The lifetimes are linked to physical processes of luminescence and thus provide a means to study dynamics involving charge transfer between point-defects in materials. This book is devoted to time-resolved optically stimulated luminescence and is suitable for researchers with an interest in the study of point-defects using luminescence methods. The book first sets the method within the context of luminescence field at large and then provides an overview of the instrumentation used. There is much attention on models for time-resolved optically stimulated luminescence, two of which are analytical and the third of which is based on computational simulation of experimental results. To bring relevance to the discussion, the book draws on examples from studies on quartz and a-Al2O3:C, two materials widely investigated using this method. The book shows how kinetic analysis for various thermal effects such as thermal quenching and thermal assistance can be investigated using time-resolved luminescence. Although use of light sums is an obvious choice for this, contemporary work is discussed to show the versatility of using other alternative methods such the dynamic throughput.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time is an important factor in physical and natural sciences. It characterizes the progress of chemical and biochemical processes. Mass spectrometry provides the means to study molecular structures by detecting gas-phase ions with the unique mass-to-charge ratios. Time-resolved mass spectrometry (TRMS) allows one to differentiate between chemical states that can be observed sequentially at different time points. Real-time mass spectrometric monitoring enables recording data continuously with a specified temporal resolution. The TRMS approaches – introduced during the past few decades – have shown temporal resolutions ranging from hours down to microseconds and beyond. This text covers the key aspects of TRMS. It introduces ion sources, mass analyzers, and interfaces utilized in time-resolved measurements; discusses the influence of data acquisition and treatment; finally, it reviews most prominent applications of TRMS – in the studies of reaction kinetics and mechanism, physicochemical phenomena, protein structure dynamics, biocatalysis, and metabolic profiling. It will assist science and engineering students to gain a basic understanding of the TRMS concept, and to recognize its usefulness. In addition, it may benefit scientists who conduct molecular studies in the areas of chemistry, physics and biology.

Book excerpt: For more than two decades time-resolved vibrational spectroscopy (TRVS) was only part of general conferences on solid-state physics, molecular spec troscopy, photochemistry and photobiology. It was in 1982 when the first meeting on TRVS was organized at Lake Placid. The conference met a strong need among the workers in the field, and it was decided to continue with spe cial conferences on this topic. The 2nd International Conference on Time-Resolved Vibrational Spec troscopy was held June 3-i, 1985 at Bayreuth-Bischofsgrun, Germany. Sci entists from many disciplines came together to discuss their common interest in time-resolved techniques and spectroscopic applications. The high qual ity of the research presented, the enthusiasm of the participants, and the attractive surroundings combined to an enjoyable atmosphere. Ample time for discussions and the limited number of participants (approximately 100) stimulated the formal and informal exchange of ideas. "\'umerous people helped to make the conference run smoothly. Special thanks are due to Mrs. Lenich for making the technical arrangements, and to the program committee for the selection of the scientific presentations. The meeting has benefited from several financial souces. The generous sup port by the Emil-Warburg-Stiftung was particularly helpful. Financial aid of the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft" and of the "Bayerisches Staatsmini sterium fur U nterricht und K ultus" is also gratefully acknowledged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of the present thesis, the first method for the spatially resolved surface immobilization of various metallopolymers on a single surface was developed, employing the versatile NITEC photochemistry. The in-depth analysis of the photoligation process identified crucial parameters for the successful immobilization of the metallopolymers, which are also valid for all other photo triggered surface ligation protocols. ToF-SIMS and spatially resolved XPS analysis of the prepared surfaces demonstrated the preserved chemical composition of the fabricated metallopolymer surfaces. In the second part of the thesis, the photochemistry of spiro(thio)pyrans was investigated for the formation of light-sensitive spiropyran-metal complexes, as well as the creation of a photoresist for the application in STED-inspired lithography. The irradiation of an NMR tube inside the NMR spectrometer in so-called LED-NMR experiments was introduced for the investigation of the prepared spiropyran-metal complexes. Finally, the photo triggered reaction of the spirothiopyran photoswitch with an electron deficient maleimide was used for the spatial encoding of surfaces for the first time. In addition, the preparation of a spirothiopyran-based photoresist enabled the writing of structures below the diffraction limit, with the thinnest lines written with STED-inspired lithography to date.

Book excerpt: This book describes the design, development, characterisation and application of two novel fluorescence imaging instruments based on spectrally resolved detector arrays (SRDAs). The simplest SRDA is the standard colour camera, which integrates a Bayer filter array of red, green and blue colour filters to replicate the colour sensing capability of the human eye. The SRDAs used in this book contain many more colours, ranging from 16 to over 100 colour channels. Using these compact, robust and low-cost detectors for biomedical applications opens new avenues of exploration that were not possible before, in particular, the use of spectral imaging in endoscopy. The work presented shows for the first time that not only can this new type of camera be used for fluorescence imaging, but also that it is able to resolve signals from up to 7 different dyes – a level of multiplexing not previously achieved in tissue with such compact and robust equipment. Furthermore, it reports the application of a bimodal endoscope performing both reflectance and fluorescence imaging using these cameras in an ex vivo pig oesophagus model.

Book excerpt: This book offers a unique perspective of the impact of scanning probe microscopes on our understanding of the chemistry of the surface at the nanoscale. Research oriented, with the concepts gleaned from Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy being related to the more established and accepted views in surface chemistry and catalysis, the authors have addressed the question "How do the models based on classical spectroscopic and kinetic studies stand up to scrutiny at the atom-resolved level?". In taking this approach the reader, new to the field of surface chemistry, should be able to obtain a perspective on how the evidence from STM confirms or questions long standing tenets. An emphasis is given to "how did we get to where we are now" and a large number of figures from the literature are included along with suggestions for further reading. Topics discussed include: - the dynamics of oxygen chemisorption at metal surfaces - control of oxygen states and surface reconstruction - dissociative chemisorption of diatomic and hydrocarbon molecules - nanoparticles and chemical reactivity - STM at high pressures - structural studies of sulfur containing molecules and molecular templating This book will appeal to all those who wish to become familiar with the contribution Scanning Tunnelling Microscopy has made to the understanding of the field of surface chemistry and heterogeneous catalysis and also to those who are new to catalysis, a fascinating and important area of chemistry.

Book excerpt: This book mainly focuses on the study of the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi2212) and single-layer FeSe film grown on SrTiO3 (STO) substrate by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). It provides the first electronic evidence for the origin of the anomalous high-temperature superconductivity in single-layer FeSe grown on SrTiO3 substrate. Two coexisted sharp-mode couplings have been identified in superconducting Bi2212. The first ARPES study on single-layer FeSe/STO films has provided key insights into the electronic origin of superconductivity in this system. A phase diagram and electronic indication of high Tc and insulator to superconductor crossover have been established in the single-layer FeSe/STO films. Readers will find essential information on the techniques used and interesting physical phenomena observed by ARPES.
