Hierfür wird zunächst der Gegenstand der Bindungstheorie untersucht, um im Folgenden auf die Bedeutung der Bindungen beziehungsweise Bezugspersonen eingehen zu können. Nach einer kurzen Skizzierung primärer und sekundärer Bezugspersonen wird die Scheidung der Eltern unter resilienten Aspekten betrachtet, um anschließend die Resilienz unter Berücksichtigung der Bezugspersonen als Schutzfaktoren im Bereich der Kitas analysieren zu können. Trennungen können selbstredend immer vorkommen; das Alter des Kindes und die Beziehung zu seinen Eltern spielt in den meisten Fällen nur eine sekundäre Rolle. Über die Motive und Beweggründe einer Trennung soll an dieser Stelle nicht weiter eingegangen werden. Vielmehr wird der Fokus auf die Entwicklung des Kindes gelegt, auf welches die Scheidung seiner Eltern Einfluss hat. Wie dieser de facto Einfluss aussieht muss subjektiv hinsichtlich des jeweiligen Falls untersucht werden, da Eltern-Kind-Beziehungen, wie auch sonstige zwischenmenschliche Beziehungen, sehr unterschiedlich sein können. Themenübergreifend kann jedoch untersucht werden, inwieweit die Scheidung der Eltern Einfluss auf die Belastbarkeit des Kindes hat, denn Trennungen sind in der Regel immer belastend. In der Psychologie können die Belastbarkeit und innere Stärke eines Menschen als Resilienz bezeichnet werden. Insbesondere in der Entwicklungspsychologie bezeichnet die Resilienz die Widerstandsfähigkeit von Kindern. Sie ermöglicht, trotz belastender Umstände, wie Trennungen und Scheidungen, eine normale Entwicklung. Ist ein Kind resilient, kann es auf wechselnde Lebenssituationen und Anforderungen flexibel und angemessen reagieren und schwierige und belastende Situationen ohne psychische Folgeschäden meistern. Doch um eine entsprechende Resilienz überhaupt entwickeln zu können, bedarf es verschiedener Voraussetzungen.

Die meisten Autoren gehen davon aus, dass Kinder durch den Verlust ihrer primären elterlichen Bezugspersonen, die für die meisten Kinder Schutz und Sicherheit bedeuten, in ihrer psychischen, geistigen und sozialen Entwicklung schwer geschädigt werden können. Eine solche traumatische Erfahrung stellt eine potenzielle Gefahr für die weitere Entwicklung in der Kindheit dar. Es scheint, dass derartige Risikoperspektiven automatisch mit negativen Konsequenzen für die kindliche Entwicklung verbunden sind. Dieser negative Aspekt tritt in den Vordergrund. Es gibt jedoch Kinder, die trotz dieses Risikos zu erstaunlich robusten, kompetenten und leistungsfähigen Persönlichkeiten heranwachsen. Solche Kinder werden als "resilient" bezeichnet. Unter "Resilienz" versteht man die menschliche Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber belastenden Lebensumständen. Der Gegenbegriff zur "Resilienz" ist der Begriff der "Vulnerabilität", das bedeutet Verletzlichkeit und Verwundbarkeit.
